Dating a guy with an awful first name (light-hearted)

whatsinanameanywayright · 03/07/2023 14:13

To be clear - this is a lighthearted thread - I know he can't help his name and I'm obviously going to carry on seeing this guy - we met on a dating app and I knew his name before matching with him.. but it's a very unsexy name.. really not a fan of it. Can't figure out a nickname that works either (he's told me a nickname his friends use too and I'm not a fan of that either) - although to be clear he has no idea I have any qualms with his name of course!

So for anyone else who's ever done this - I assume you just get used to the name after a while and it stops being so strange!?... Um.. right...!?

Feel free to guess his name/give me your worst names for a guy and if it would ever stop you from dating him?

Eugene always makes me think of the (for then very high tech) computer in First Class, presented by Debbie Greenwood, back in the 80s!

I had fantasies about a man that I used to see in our office sometimes (big, open plan and he worked on a different floor). As soon as I found out he was called Brian, it put me off. Can’t explain it, I just couldn’t imagine the name coming out of my mouth.

BigDavesGusset · 03/07/2023 21:48

Barry’s not too bad.

Although it does make me think of Barry Shit Peas.

samestyle · 03/07/2023 22:03

Worst male name I heard was Stacey, also Jody anything that seems to feminine would put me off. I'd rather Barry over Wayne though.

ZoChan · 03/07/2023 22:26

I dated Olaf - he wasn't even Nordic but Indonesian 🤷🏼‍♀️

Many couples develop nicknames for each other that are ok to use in public, and usually have some "in joke" meaning for the couple. Just expedite coming up with one for him😀

Hibiscrubbed · 03/07/2023 23:06

Maybe call him ‘B’, if you stay long enough to become familiar. It’s a dreadful name, though.

I once encountered a man by the name of Royston. I don't know if all/most men known as Roy are just Roy or if they all have the full name of Royston?!

I can't say what his surname was, as it would be very outing (no, it's not 'Vasey'!), but both names said together sound exactly like a typical exclamation of surprise that Robin would have made to Batman Grin

Roy is just terrible.

I know a Roy who gets called Royston but his name is just Roy. He's 75 though.

I don’t think Barry is that bad but I went to school with a Barry and he was fit so I guess I associate that name with him 😄

Bruce, Keith, Ken, Les and similar aren’t great but I could deal with it if I really liked them.

For it to be a dealbreaker for me to even date them it would have to be pretty bad like Ernest, Melvin or Cecil or something like that!

TheAverageJoanne · 03/07/2023 23:17

All my brothers and several exes names have popped up on this amusing thread.

Channellingsophistication · 03/07/2023 23:20

I once had a crush on a chap callled Dougal.

JobMatch3000 · 03/07/2023 23:39

I briefly dated a Kevin. His sister called him "Special K" and his mates called him "Ket" as in short for Ketamine. He was a twat.

This made me laugh way more than it should have! 😆

I think that's actually quite a cute name ... Scottish Yes?

Forever associated with dimwit Father Dougal from Father Ted now though (before that it was the dog in the Magic Roundabout).

I once went out with a Rikki. Ricky would have been bad enough but bearable but Rikki 😐😬

Rosietheravisher · 04/07/2023 00:29

Dick Johnson

John Thomas

MrsJackWhicher · 04/07/2023 03:17

Just hoping it's not Barry from Teddington - PM me if it is 😄
My friend is dating a guy called Titus..

goingcrazy142904 · 04/07/2023 04:13

Could be worse - could be Keith 🤣

JauntyRedShoes · 04/07/2023 05:10

I went on a date with a Noel when I was in my late teens. I didn’t have a second date because I couldn’t bring myself to say his name. I know a Neville shortened to Nev and a friend once dated a Dwayne.

Neverinamonthofsundays · 04/07/2023 05:40

Barry is not bad compared to Neville or Gordon...

LadyEloise1 · 04/07/2023 08:46

@SwedishEdith
I remember the actor Clive Mantle in Casualty too.
His character in the show was Mike Barrett.

Last name didn't end in D too, did it? There was a hot Dougal D**n at my school.
