Dating a guy with an awful first name (light-hearted)

whatsinanameanywayright · 03/07/2023 14:13

To be clear - this is a lighthearted thread - I know he can't help his name and I'm obviously going to carry on seeing this guy - we met on a dating app and I knew his name before matching with him.. but it's a very unsexy name.. really not a fan of it. Can't figure out a nickname that works either (he's told me a nickname his friends use too and I'm not a fan of that either) - although to be clear he has no idea I have any qualms with his name of course!

So for anyone else who's ever done this - I assume you just get used to the name after a while and it stops being so strange!?... Um.. right...!?

Feel free to guess his name/give me your worst names for a guy and if it would ever stop you from dating him?

@PurpleButterflyWings it’s not the worst name, but I’m old enough to connect it with magic roundabout….

@Ridemeginger no, it didnt… so clearly, it’s quite a hot name!!!

My husband told me this morning that I spent the majority of the night shouting “Gary!” angrily.
This thread was the last thing I read before going to sleep.
Be careful ladies.

@SwedishEdith
I remember the actor Clive Mantle in Casualty too.
His character in the show was Mike Barrett.

That's the one. Calm, reassuring voice.

SwedishEdith · 04/07/2023 15:58

Oh, and of course, Clive Myrie has made Clive an acceptable name now.

Flakjacketon · 04/07/2023 16:12

Many years ago I dated a Richard who liked to be known as Dick. &

barbarahunter · 04/07/2023 16:23

Have we had Travis yet?

HumanBurrito · 04/07/2023 20:03

I had a fling with a Bernard once. It didn't last long.

Elmer83 · 04/07/2023 20:16

It’s Ian/Iain isn’t it??!!

ThirtyTwoGoingUnder · 04/07/2023 22:24

GreenMarigold · 04/07/2023 22:34

Bernard - Grim . How can people saddle a child with a name like that .

Ridemeginger · 04/07/2023 22:48

@Channellingsophistication I looked up my Dougal. He now looks like Alan Carr!

I came across a recruitment consultant in the early 2000s called William Cock.

CatAndHisKit · 05/07/2023 00:48

Trevor / Trevs?

Grumpusaurus · 05/07/2023 07:03

I once turned down a date with a guy called Gordon. Yes, shallow but all my friends would be singing "Gordon is a MORRON..." Jilted John style

Jilted John Gordon is a Moron

I love that jilted john song!

HoollyWugger · 05/07/2023 07:16

Barry was my first thought too! Can you lengthen it (oo er Blush) and call him Barrington? What's his second initial (please not J!) - I often call my partner by his first two initials.

I went out with someone who called himself Neil but he was really called Gilbert. He was definitely more of a Gilbert than a Neil if you know what I mean.

I know a Gilbert: he is very successful, loaded, really good looking I have a slight crush and goes by Gil which is quite cool in a Gil Scott-Heron kind of way. Referring to him as Gilbert wouldn't be quite the same 😆.

Name changed as no one else could have such a history of awful ex names - I’ve dated a Malcolm, Donal, Kyle, Maurice and a Warren - and I’m only in my early 40’s so my age isn’t an excuse. You get used to the names, especially if you find them hot!

And if someone asked me the name I liked least of my exes it would be Lee - which is pretty normal really.

barbarahunter · 05/07/2023 08:03

Actually now I come to think of it, a couple of my arse exes names feature heavily on this thread. Couldn't happen to nicer blokes 😂

baggiesmalls · 05/07/2023 08:11

I dated a Wayne

Called him waynio
Went off him when he asked me if I'd like "some wayney sausage " 🤢🤢
