So I doubt a text saying, thanks for topping up, I called the number 141 in front imagine my horror when a woman answered?
What is this?
I have no idea what he's topping up from, no other accounts???
And who is it? Why would he top someone else's phone up???

It could be financial domination by a findom mistress. They get submissive or kinky men to pay bills and top up phones, send Amazon vouchers. They rarely meet up in r/l, it's a power play thing. Google her number, it might flag up. If it was an affair I think the thanks message might be more luvvy duvvy with kisses?

742EvergreenTerrace · 03/06/2023 12:29

Maybe they didn’t top up a phone, but utilities. We have an app where we top up (very old relic but hey ho)

Only on MN!
Found out your husband is carrying on an affair, violating your trust and shattering your marriage?
Bit irritating :/

Sorry for my lack of hysteria I’m of a stable
she’s not actually found out he’s having an affair yet has she ?
the annoyance would be the not knowing

Mummysaf · 03/06/2023 12:35

Of a stable mind even

Museya15 · 03/06/2023 12:58

This is how one of the bosses in my workplace got found out and the other boss was with his mistress when he accidently rang his wife whilst the phone was in his pocket, she heard everything what they were saying.

Phone the number with this script (withhold number or get your own burner!):

"Hello, this is Sharon from EE. We have had a case of potential fraud registered against the top-up payment made on this phone on June 2nd, as the name on the card does not match the name that this phone is registered to. Before we can look into this further, for security, please can you confirm your name?" <pause for answer> "Thank you, and your date of birth?" <pause for answer> "Thank you. Now please can you confirm your relationship to the card holder?"

Could be any number of responses to that. He's my dad, I'm his girlfriend, he's my boss, he's my workmate etc

Next question will be "and can you confirm that you had the cardholder's permission to use their card?"

You may get some more background here like; Yes, he tops it up himself as it's a work phone and reclaims it through expenses, or, yes, I don't have a card so I give him cash and he tops my phone up for me as a favour.

Then just finish with "Thank you for confirming that. I'll remove the fraud flag from the account"

You should have all the answers you need at the end of that. If it's innocent, breathe a sigh of relief and forget about it. If it's not, you have her name and DOB so go and do some digging before you confront him.

Only a complete moron would answer any of those questions!

You seem to think he had a ‘burner’ though. That’s got pretty bad connotations, no?! Affair is about the best one.

And yet your ‘sound mind’ is merely annoyed. 😆

@Ferferksake

If a stranger called you and asked for your name and date of birth, you'd oblige? Goodness.

Well hang on a minute; OP has laid bare her life and what’s currently happening on a public forum. She expected people to be interested and voice opinions and that’s what she’s got

When you top up a phone, doesn't the 'thanks for topping up' text always go to the number that was topped up? Why would he get the text if it's not his number receiving the credit?

This ...

I think it's a scam

You get the thanks for topping up on the phone you are topping up!

Tidsleytiddy · 03/06/2023 13:49

Why wouldn’t other posters want to know the eventual outcome?

A stranger that knew exactly when your phone had been topped up, which network and that someone else had paid for it? You'd be very surprised how many would. If you've got the voice for it plenty of people will answer.

neilyoungismyhero · 03/06/2023 14:01

PollyAmour · 03/06/2023 08:24

Ask him. Much less drama and you’ll know then. All this faffing about is getting you nowhere.

Ask him and he'll lie and then be more careful in the future.

Ferferksake · 03/06/2023 14:06

Shade17 · 03/06/2023 13:07

Only a complete moron would answer any of those questions!

There are plenty of them out there. Only a complete moron would be shagging a married man for instance.

With the right tone, plus you come in with knowledge that can't otherwise be explained, you're giving the network, when & how phone was topped up. A lot of people will take that as proof that you are who you claim to be.

GrannieD · 03/06/2023 14:08

Have you checked mobile banking OP? If the payment is there then take a photo of it for your evidence. Hope it's not and the message was a scammers way of interacting with you. Good luck OP

justasking111 · 03/06/2023 14:10

Well @Helpneeded1234567 hasn't been back so suspect that there's an innocent explanation and she's somewhat embarrassed.

If it is then I imagine most likely as a PP said, it could be a portable WiFi device as she got a female voice when she rang hers. How will those screaming affair survive if they don't get their big juicy update as if they're watching a soap opera ffs. People are always itching for the man to be having an affair on here, even when they know that's clearly not going to be what the OP wants to hear.

AlfietheSchnauzer · 03/06/2023 14:45

Whatever happened, I hope you're ok, OP Gin

Is that legal?

Suppose it could work if the woman is a complete idiot.

PoseyFlump · 03/06/2023 19:53

The only problem with the scam idea is the suggestion that there are multiple text messages going as far back as February confirming top ups.

If that's true then it can't be a scam with that sort of text history.

Secret child or secret lover. But if you ask him without gathering evidence he'll say he's been helping out a mate and didn't tell anyone because he'd be embarrassed.
