Neighbour - should I report anything? Am I overreacting?

Our neighbour lives alone and is in her eighties. Her husband died just over a year ago. I would say both of them have/had dementia.

We used to hear the arguing through the wall every day. Always the husband shouting at her, and her pleading for him to stop.
She spoke to me once about protecting herself from him.
He died suddenly. I’ve always kept an eye out for details if a funeral - but there hasn’t been one, and she said to me a couple of months ago that she was having a lot of problems with the coroner.

My initial thought (and perhaps irrational thought) when he suddenly died was that - perhaps she did something??
Should I say anything to anyone or just butt out?
Another concern I have is that she told my partner she has a gun. She showed it to him, and it’s only an air pistol. She said she was going to shoot foxes with it - the issue is that she thinks there are foxes under a small bush in our front garden (there aren’t!). I have 2 children and - again maybe irrational - but what if she decided to shoot at an imaginary fox when we are out the front??
Partner thinks I’m overreacting??

Ah yes, the inevitable redacted email update wot puts all the doubting Thomas' in their place.

Unredacted version

Good morning

Please fuck off.

Kind regards

PS. If any of this makes Mumsnet or the Daily Mail I will personally fillet you and feed you to the ducks

PAFMO · 10/01/2022 17:44

I rather hope it does make the Daily Mail. For once.

Redglitter · 10/01/2022 18:34

She says he's dead, but to your knowledge, no funeral has taken place

But the OP did see him being removed by private ambulance so it's not like the neighbours buried him under the patio.

I cant understand why the fact she did see this that anything else to do with his death is anything to do with her. Clearly if there was anything suspicious the undertakers would probably have noticed 🙄

Not being able to find a death certificate is irrelevant. How do you know that you actually know his proper name. The name you knee him as could be a family name of nickname & that's why you can't find it

Seriously read a book or get a life & stop making drama where there's none

TracyMosby · 10/01/2022 18:42

Well I for one Im glad this octogenarian domestic abusive victim will feel the full weight of the law!

Hmm
Mom2K · 10/01/2022 19:22

OP, I suggest you seek psychiatric help for yourself. It's bad enough that you are suspicious of murder without any actual evidence or fact to support that....

But to now show mumsnet the email you received from the coroner as justification to call the police, as if the coroner's office is actually encouraging you to do so because your suspicions are valid....the mind boggles.

That email you received (well the parts you haven't blacked out) seems standard. There is always a disclaimer to call the police etc in the event of an emergency/if they are unable to assist you directly 🙄

Just leave her alone. The husband was carried away by HealthCare professionals. If anything about his death was actually suspicious it would have been flagged. This thread reveals more concern for YOUR mental health and irrational thoughts more so than anything else.

coldfeetmama · 10/01/2022 19:24

Is that not an automatic reply email?
The kind you get when you email most public office
To say your email has been received and will be acknowledged within 6 weeks

Hen2018 · 10/01/2022 19:39

What do you think an old lady is going to do with an air pistol? Sting you to death?

A) You don’t need a licence
B) You’d have to be an excellent shot and about 10cm away to damage an animal
C) The likelihood of damaging a human is minuscule, unless you walked up to them and shot them in the eye
D) it’s REALLY HARD to shoot a pistol accurately. It’s not like playing about with an air rifle, it’s actually a skill!

I’m ignoring the bit about possible murder because it’s bonkers.

Axolottie · 10/01/2022 20:28

Wow!! Seems like the full force of ignorant Mums-netters have decided to comment on my thread!

An air pistol requires a licence, and can cause damage to humans. You have to prove competence in order to own one. Given that the fox infested bush/neighbours window/my car are in short range - yes I am concerned.

It is an offence to have an air weapon in a public place without a “reasonable excuse”. It is ultimately for the courts to decide what constitutes a “reasonable excuse”.
It is an offence to have an air weapon with intent to endanger life, as well as intent to damage or to destroy property, or to be reckless as to whether property would be damaged or destroyed. It is also against the law to deliberately kill pets, certain wild animals and birds.

Advice that should be followed in order to achieve Best Practice, any deviation from which would need justification.

THE FOLLOWING GOLDEN RULES APPLY:-

Always know where the muzzle of your air rifle is pointing and NEVER point it in an unsafe direction.
The safe conduct of air rifle shooting must meet the standards described in this code, show respect for the countryside, due regard to health and safety and consideration for others.
Before you shoot, make sure that a safe backstop is present to capture the pellet.
Consider live quarry; do not shoot beyond the bounds of your ability. Do not take chance shots.
REMEMBER – ignorance of the law is no excuse. If in doubt, always ask.

@Axolottie, where did you get that from about air pistols? It's not illegal at all - I know because I own one myself (purely for target shooting).
I also owned a .22 semiautomatic pistol prior to Hungerford, but handed that in to the police as required when gun laws changed.
I know this isn't the point of your thread and don't want to derail it, but please make sure you are quoting 'facts' that are true.

No, an air pistol does not require a licence, oh ignorant mumsnetter.
Hen2018 · 10/01/2022 21:23

You have to be 14 to use an air rifle unaccompanied. I have 3 and an air pistol, and have done for over 30 years.

You’re talking out of your arse.

PAFMO · 10/01/2022 21:29

This is all getting very strange.

Hen2018 · 10/01/2022 21:31

Also you don’t have to be “competent” to own an air pistol. Who is going to check? There are no checks to stop you buying one, no exams and, as I’m sure we’ll all keep telling you, no licence.

user1481840227 · 10/01/2022 21:46

You saw an elderly mans body being removed by private ambulance over a year ago and now you suspect his abused wife with dementia may have murdered him?

If she did kill him (extremely unlikely) and there happened to be a trial then you do know you'll have to be a witness don't you?

MamaGaia · 10/01/2022 22:20

You went ahead and contacted the coroner’s office? Despite everyone on this thread telling you to mind your own business and stop being a shit stirrer. Shameful. Absolutely shameful. I am stunned at your behaviour. Shameful.

And you expect us to believe that the coroner happily gave away information and suggested you contact the police. Please, that is either an automated email or they’ve told you this has nothing to do with you so butt out, like everyone else here.

EmergencyPoncho · 10/01/2022 22:22

Oh heck, I am a gullible idiot. Pls ignore above.

starfishmummy · 10/01/2022 22:51

Sunrae28my Mum is registered with various Ancestry type websites as she does a lot of family history research. She looked it up for me, as she also thinks it’s all a bit odd, She had UK death registrations for 2021, he died in 2020.

The only official register of deaths is the Government Record Office. And their digitised death records only go up to 2019. Other sites may have later records but these will kot necessarily be complete. Ergo just because she can't find a death registration doesn't mean there isn't one.

Kinneddar · 11/01/2022 00:17

I'd love to hear the call to Police

OP. I think my neighbour has murdered her husband

101: What makes you think that

OP. I haven't seen him in over a year

101; Was he at home last time you saw him

OP. He was being carried into a Private Ambulance

  1. A Private one not an emergency one

OP. No a Private one

  1. A Private one from a funeral director??

OP. Yes

101 - 'click' as phone is hung up

Definitely call 101. The call takers could probably do with a laugh

nalabae · 11/01/2022 03:30

The fact she wants to shoot foxes shows she is a c.u.n.t and cannot be trusted

Why do they only go up to 2019?
rainbowstardrops · 11/01/2022 05:30

So a coroner's office filled you in on the details of the neighbours death??? That would be confidential information and not just given out to any Tom Dick or Harry!

sammylady37 · 11/01/2022 05:45

Anyone expecting a flounce and this thread subsequently pulled for the op suddenly developing ‘real life privacy concerns’?
