My DH is obsessed with the New World Order

I need help.

He's bought thousands of pounds worth of equipment - including a machete, an axe, a crossbow and a pellet gun. If he could buy a real gun legally in England he would. I wouldn't be surprised if he bought one illegally.

He's obsessed with the banking industry collapsing, the internet being taken out and power going down. He says the masses aren't prepared because they trust the government too much.

He doesn't talk about anything else. He watches videos all day long on how to "prepare" for what's to come. And stuff from the world economic forum/ mark moss.

He keeps taking about people being shot in Australia and how that will come over here soon.

WWYD?

I'd be seeking advice from the police about the weapons for a start.

You know who's be first to get it, if he did have a bad breakdown? You.

I'd be leaving personally

YetAnotherSpartacus · 30/09/2021 16:04

Some weirdness on this one! I’d be leaving, OP.

Remaker · 30/09/2021 16:16

This is very worrying OP. The weapons alone would freak me right out, who is he planning on using them on? I think I would be removing myself from the situation and trying to get him some mental health support.

Just from a factual point of view, nobody has been shot in Australia (I live there). We’ve had some sustained protests about the extended lockdown in Melbourne, with a mixture of aggrieved tradespeople infiltrated with some anti vaxer right wing activists. They urinated on the war memorial and injured police officers. Pepper spray was utilised but nobody was shot and the greatest health risk was the covid that they’ve shared around amongst themselves during the protest.

Does this person sound well to you?
Lots of people got extremely obsessed with covid too non-stop watching the news and talking about it non-stop and so on.

Obviously at the start there was more of a worry because it was so unknown but then it became quite clear that generally unless you were vulnerable the chances of serious illness were tiny. I know couple of people in their early 30s who were not vulnerable in any way who became OBSESSED with it and OCD about cleaning everything, not seeing anyone even if as restrictions were eased etc.

They're not 100% well obviously as they now have things like OCD and severe health anxiety, but they wouldn't be sectioned and most people wouldn't call them mentally ill...but if you're on the other side of it it's considered severe mental illness and they should be sectioned!!!

It's the same process that caused the obsession on both sides, and they are both dealing with anxiety and stress and worry, but yet because one side was listening to the official scaremongering they're still considered sane compared to the whackballs on the other side!!

RickJames · 30/09/2021 16:33

It's not the prepping that's the issue imo, its the weapons. Presumably the DH has no experience in handling weapons which make them a danger to him as much as anyone else.

We have some friends that are armed to the teeth, come to think of it, one family member too (he's a gamekeeper). They've had their guns for years and keep them within the terms of their licence. I don't feel remotely worried about them. If someone I knew just started buying weapons out of the blue, I'd shit myself and distance myself.

My DH contents himself with solar panels and insulation projects. He's considering sinking a well, bless him. We went through his 'buy gold' phase last year.. he didn't buy any and bought the solar stuff instead. Much more sensible.

user1481840227 · 30/09/2021 16:34

Just to add, obsessions on BOTH sides caused problems. Obviously living with a doomsdayer would be a nightmare, but on the other side there was the severely anxious who didn't want their partners to go out and do x or y as restrictions were lifted out of fear.

Please note, I am not talking about the people who were really vulnerable, but the people who were not vulnerable who got caught up in all of the worry and fear!

Electri · 30/09/2021 16:47

Thanks everyone, just to answer some questions, yes he has a job and wfh, money isn't an issue.
It's just the volume of stuff. We have cupboards full of food, sleeping bags, tents, bottled water, knives, stuff to cook the food on, heat lamps, foldable solar panels, first aid kits... I could go on. Literally everything you could need.

He's considering buying gas masks. He refuses to wear a mask and obviously hasn't had either vaccine. He's not anti-vax, just anti the COVID vax.

He knows how to use the crossbow, it's a huge one, I think it was around £300.

He also had a lot of silver as he doesn't trust the banks.

I don't feel I am in any danger; he's bought 2 of most things to protect "us" but it's just totally draining.

You may not feel you are in danger, but that crossbow in the wrong hands is a very effective killing machine.

Please get some advice from the police.

Fifteentoes · 30/09/2021 17:00
@Fifteentoes you paint a picture of inevitable societal collapse, but we have literally just lived through a global pandemic in which Amazon was still delivering. The inevitability is questionable.

Apocalyptic cults or thinking have always been popular. And it sounds as though those ideas also appeal to people on this thread.

But the OP’s DH is disproportionately applying this crap to his own life because he is mentally unwell.
That's a fair point, but I think the problem is that if we keep going the way we are and don't VERY fundamentally change some things, the societal collapse is inevitable. and all the evidence suggests that that's what we're going to keep doing. We have a government led by brazenly self-interested charlatans, serving the interests of a wealthy elite who have the means to protect themselves against societal collapse (and possibly even make an opportunity of it), who are gradually dismantling the processes of democracy that might have had the power to bring about change. We have no effective opposition, with an undemocratic two party system and a second party whose leadership has decided the only way they can respond to the situation is by becoming as much as possible like the first party and reassuring the electorate that they won't change anything. We have know about the implications of climate change for decades, with gradually snowballing urgency, yet are still woefully behind where we need to be on doing anything about it.

None of this is inevitable, I agree with you. It is the cumulative result of many millions of choices that people make, and they could all decide to choose otherwise.

It just doesn't look like they're going to.

TheChip · 30/09/2021 17:02

A huge crossbow he knows how to use and you don't feel in any danger? Are those things even legal?
Marjoriedrawers · 30/09/2021 17:21

And what is he going to do with the silver? How exactly is he going to cash that in seeing he doesn't trust banks? Write an IOU or swap it for a can of beans when the word ends?

Sounds more like an expensive hobby with this update tbh
Marjoriedrawers · 30/09/2021 17:26

I don't know, I just wonder if the bigger danger is that OP can't see how normalised this has become. It's not exactly looking rational.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 30/09/2021 17:38

If you met him now and he explained his beliefs and his stockpile to you, would you even go on a second date with him?

It's ok to not feel safe because he's changed. He's living in an echo chamber now where people are either (in their view) enlightened or sheeple. There's no middle ground.

You're one of the sheeple in his eyes and that will overspill into either tension between you, outright arguments when you don't toe the line (especially as he's planning to get stuff like gas masks for both of you so is already involving you without your permission) or worse case scenario violence.

With a man who you know has weapons.

He's changed. If that's changed your feelings for him (as it would for almost everyone) then you don't need to feel guilty at breaking up with him.

As I said earlier, due to how obsessive he is and that he's all consumed by it I think he sounds unwell. He won't engage with help though because he will see the authorities as against him / spreading the mainstream media narrative blah blah blah. So it won't be fruitful to try to engage him with support while you are still with him.

If it was me I would leave him and then once out and safe somewhere, call the non emergency police line to discuss the fact he has those weapons and that you've left but are concerned he has them. Then it's up to them to do whatever they think is best.

I have no idea Majorie :(

It's gone way past just being a hobby. I brought up the fact that one of our good friends is thinking of going into teaching. The first thing he said, without hesitation, was that he'll have to have "that poison" injected into his arm.

He doesn't go on like this to anyone else, in front of strangers and at events he tells people he's had the jabs and doesn't go on and on about the NWO: so, he must, at some level, know that it's not right. 🤷🏻‍♀️ it's all saved for me.

Thank you @youvegottenminuteslynn

Your posts have been really helpful. More than you know.

In short, no, I wouldn't go on a second date with him if he'd expressed all of this to me on the first date. No way.

I think crates of vodka would be better than silver for trading if society collapses. Or vitamins, benzodiazipines, antidepressants, medical supplies, tobacco.

Get him to read The Road by Cormac Mccarthy- excellent tips there. On second thoughts don't Grin

Don't you think it's a bit odd though the conspiracy theorists keep moving the goalposts for when everyone was going to die after having the vaccine? Weren't we all supposed to die within 6 months, then when nothing happened it's now suddenly going to happen within 18 months?
BrendaBubbles · 30/09/2021 17:53

I think crates of vodka would be better than silver for trading if society collapses.

I watched a documentary about the people trapped in sieges in areas of Yugoslavia during the horrible conflicts of the 90s and they actually said bottles of alcohol and things like lighters, lighter fuel and antibiotics became hugely valuable forms of currency.

user1481840227 · 30/09/2021 18:19

@Marjoriedrawers
Never heard anyone suggest anything like that, wouldn't have made much sense for it to kill people off after 6 months because then the rest of the population would have refused it!

Hawkins001 · 30/09/2021 18:29

@mathanxiety

If you research fractional reserve banking ect, money itself is fiat currency, basically holds no value, where as there is actual value in gold, at least that's my understanding, however the knowledge is out there for further reading.

@Hawkins001
This is what you learn at about age 13 in the school system I was educated in. It's not esoteric knowledge known only to the privileged few who possess the secret of where to find it.

The context for that was my response as to why a person would rather trust the value of gold, rather than a bank, although its just a guess

Oh yeah, completely normal hobby. Just like the other men on MN with their bikes and golf etc. Totally nothing to worry about. I mean the OP should just make sure she has equal time and money for pursuing her radicalised hobbies and everything should be great. Maybe a spa trip or two thrown in after a hard evening of planning uprisings.

swap it for a can of beans when the word ends

Exactly this! If the banking system ends and governments collapse ordinary money ("fiat currency" as nutters farsighted folk like to call it) will be worthless and we will return to a system of bartering (hence vodka) and tradional stores of value (predominantly gold and precious metals).

MilesOfSand · 30/09/2021 18:37

This stuff has been going on for years too. There used to be a cult leader required for in person brainwashing but now we have social media and snazzy algorithms, it’s all so much more efficient. I remember reading Tara Westover’s memoir and the stuff about her dad, and the alignment to the Waco siege. It seemed isolated then but now it’s popping up all over. Different story but same madness.
