Found Receipt for expensive Jewellery in car

Got the car cleaned this Morning, and came across a receipt for expensive jewellery.. The jewellery definitely isn’t for me. Jewellery really isn’t my thing, and there’s no special occasion for him to get me anything.

Only me and my husband use the car. Although we do pick up friends from time to time. The receipt is from a few weeks ago, and on this particular day he went in to work (he usually goes in once a week) I do believe he actually went into work this day but who knows what he did after.

The receipt is from around 5;40 pm when he would have finished work. I just don’t know what to expect. Has anyone been in a similar situation ….should I just ask him about it? I don’t want to spook him if he is cheating -so then he’s extra careful. then I’ll never find out the truth!

I just have a really terrible feeling in my gut that he is cheating. Although he hasn’t shown any signs that he is at all.

Gosh, I agree with @HollowTalk! Many people who work in car washes are actually modern slavery victims or illegal immigrants on very very low pay. Of course they're not ALL in this situation, but it's not an unreasonable suggestion!

I wouldn't mention anything to him until you know more because if he is cheating he will just deny it if you don't have sufficient evidence!

FWIW I wasn't being judgemental when I said it was unlikely someone who cleaned cars for a living could afford expensive jewellery. I wasn't thinking of a valet where someone comes to your house - obviously they would earn more. I've just been to Tesco and was thinking of the car washers there who I doubt are on anything more than minimum wage. Given the high cost of living now, I would assume anyone on minimum wage couldn't afford to buy expensive jewellery.

Do a bit of googling (on private browser) to see what exactly he actually bought, this might help give some clues? How expensive are we talking and what kind of company? Do you have any daughters?

Find out if it is his receipt for an account you known about by finding another receipt or some correspondence and comparing--do this now while he's out.

Then you need to see if you can find the item or any packaging in the house, it might still be there?

Do you have access to his accounts? If so view and try to see if there is any unusual spending. Has he been going on work trips a lot, anything like that?

If the card doesn't match, I would probably take that as a sign that he has another card, not that it's not his. I would ring anyone who has been in the car to rule them out but would assume the receipt likely still came from him. If I were having an affair I would have an affair CC to minimise the trail.

Can you find another phone, or find out if anything else has been connected to the internet?

DON'T TELL HIM YOU KNOW ABOUT IT, especially don't go telling him you want to buy something there! That's the worst thing you can do, ensuring he knows you know while not having it out. You need fairly solid proof one way or the other.

Are we talking £200/£300? That could potentially be a collection for a colleague if DH works with enough people.

Or is it nearer the £1000 mark? If so I would think a leaving/birthday gift for a colleague less likely.

Sorry I think he’s cheating , he probably say it was for you and rush out to buy you jewellery to cover his tracks . This happened to me with a receipt for perfume once Sad

Hopefully a friend has dropped it..... If it's been found inthe back of the car that's a much, likelier scenario.

Just say to him, "For whom have you been buying expensive jewellery?".

Thanks for all your help and suggestions everyone

He doesn’t use apply pay. So that is out of the question.

I have never worn a bracelet! Ever in my entire life and I hate rings. So they are defiantly not for me. He is new at his company and is not a permanently member of staff. he doesn’t really get involved in the social stuff at work so I know for sure it’s not for a colleague.

The Jewellery came up to £150 for the ring and bracelet.

I am currently searching the house for statements that match the credit card he used- no luck so far.

If it was in the back it's a passenger. So could be your friend, or your DH has given someone a lift eg from work.

Anyway, it can't be difficult to find the last four numbers - they may also be saved on a computer on Stripe or similar.

I would leave the invitation somewhere noticible in the car but not obvious. if he finds it and asks you about it you know it's nothing to do with you
if it goes missing and nothing else said then keep being suspicious?
Or get some papers together say you've had the car cleaned and they found this pile of stuff on the back seat/floor. Can he go through it or else you are throwing it all out?

It could well be your Lift friends receipt?
(did she sit / put her stuff in the back though?)

Check his card later. Don't discuss with him tonight either way (if he's been up to no good you need to put things in place, if he is innocent then he'll be upset that you thought he wasn't). Report back (if it helps)

Just hand him the receipt and say 'this was in the car' and wait.
I agree with this.
@Bluntness100 not a horrible post at all.
Sorry Hollow Talk, but I agree with Bluntness100. They could have even been saving for ages to buy something like an engagement ring, or they might be very rich and like to do something to keep busy! Ok the last one is rather unlikely, but I do think it is horrible to make judgements about people, particularly based on their jobs, or even lack of one.

It could be cross contamination of rubbish if the cleaner used the same bag to clear out rubbish from another car and got transferred to yours, a bit clumsy but the cheap car cleaners don't always leave the car spotless.
Back seat of a car is bit of an odd place for the receipt to be if from your partner, I think you would start to spot more signs if cheating, going out more, sudden interest in appearance, losing weight etc

Maybe not an unreasonable suggestion.

But definitely an unreasonable assumption.

I hope I'm right to think there is an innocent explanation, it's a bit of sterotype that cheating husband buys expensive gifts for OW then leaves the evidence where the wife can find it isn't it?

A bracelet and a ring is a weird thing to buy for an OW I'd have thought, you don't randomly buy rings. earings or a necklace I could understand but those two items together seem a bit off imo

I hope you find out either way soon OP

I really hope it's not what you're thinking. It doesn't look good, but hopefully it's your friends. If not I'd wonder if she (whoever 'she' is) deliberately left it to be found.

If you do find it's his card, and you know it isn't your friend's, I think I'd leave it on the kitchen side and not say a word, I'd try and act normal and see what his reaction is, and what he does with it

I dunno, the receipt was in an envelope, this is the type of thing a woman would put in their handbag - I guess unless someone's handbag fell over in the back of the car then it's unlikely to belong to a friend. It could however, easily fall out of a jacket or trouser pocket. I am not saying its impossible to be a friend's but it is a stretch I think..

Of course it's not. No idea why people are getting shirty at her comment.

Do you have a joint account? If so, can you ring them on some pretext. Ie. You wanted to know which date the jewellery was purchased? If they can’t find the store details, just mumble a ‘wrong account’ apology and hang up.

(Anyone else picturing Love Actually?)

Maybe your "friend" left it on the back seat deliberately to upset you.

I like the idea of just leaving it in the car and seeing what he does with it. I have taken pictures already. We drop the little one to school together in the morning so I can just leave it in between the passenger and drivers seat, in the envelope. If he’s innocent will pick it up Innocently surely and ask who’s this is as it looks like a very important letter! If he’s guilty I guess he will hide it from me.

I think this is also believable as being innocent from my end as the car has been cleaned which he is aware of. So he knows there’s always random crap turning up.

Don't do anything until you know exactly what your plan is. Don't rush into something and then be falling for potential lies. You need to know more information or do some digging of some kind. Easy to beleive lies when you love the person telling them and want to beleive them. X

Might it be possible he was going out with friends for someone's birthday/work leaving do, and he bought the gift on behalf of everyone?
