Engagement ring much MUCH too small

Perhaps this belongs in Style and Beauty, I don’t know? I’m a bit stuck.

My new engagement ring is a 40 year old solitaire sapphire Tiffany ring in platinum. Flanked by 2 diamonds in the shank. RRP: insane.

It is size L. And my fat fingers are a whopping P by comparison.

I’m not in love with the idea of sending it away for resizing due to the value. So, I’m going to have to organise something in a few weeks.

I have this sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach that it will not be able to be resized by the required 4 sizes. What jeweller would even attempt it when they could damage something so expensive?

Just wondering if anyone else has any experience in this ball park?

Obviously, I have stopped eating, in case this helps the situation.CakeHaloGrin

I’m so happy to be engaged and the ring is just ridiculously beautiful but all I can do is look at the box. I’m worried I’ll never be able to wear it.

The ring is absolutely stunning!

Bettina500 · 21/02/2021 15:26

Beautiful ring! 4 sizes is a lot to adjust a ring by and could upset the stone setting so I would take it to Tiffany or somewhere very reputable.

BeeBop1456 · 21/02/2021 15:31

I’d recommend Tiffany doing the work too. My Tiffany engagement ring and wedding ring were resized by Tiffany as they became too loose after losing weight. My wedding ring is the ‘etoille’ and has diamonds scattered around. I really didn’t think it could be resized because of the style but they are brilliant and the rings look perfect. This work was done years after I originally had them, they didn’t ask me for proof of purchase. They know their rings!

abc31 · 21/02/2021 15:31

I'm not usually fussed by rings but yours is stunning. Hopefully you can get it resized without too much stress.

everydaysablessing · 21/02/2021 15:38

Really beautiful. Lucky you OP

StCharlotte · 21/02/2021 15:43

That really is a beauty OP! Congratulations Smile

A positive tale for you: I have real sausage fingers (R). My Victorian engagement ring needed to go up one or two sizes but the jeweller's handwriting was a bit florid so whoever was working on it mis-read it and changed it to a K. However they were able to re-size it to from K to R (8 sizes!!) and 22 years on it's still fine.

Ninkanink · 21/02/2021 15:45

Oh that is beautiful! I echo what others have said - take it to Tiffany’s and they will be able to sort it for you in the best way.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 21/02/2021 15:46

Wow - that is my absolute DREAM ring, absolutely gorgeous. Didn't know I had a dream ring until I saw that picture!

@OmicronPersei7

Thank you all for your responses. I actually feel much better now. I hadn’t even considered that the entire setting could be placed on a new band. I’ve just been fretting about the ring being out of my reach forever.

I am so impatient to wear it, it’s driving me mad!

Ooohh beautiful ⭐️🎉💕

HelloThereMeHearties · 21/02/2021 15:48

I have two engagement rings. One a lovely family heirloom, which I daren't wear all the time. And one a more cheap and cheerful costume ring, which I wear whenever.

HelloThereMeHearties · 21/02/2021 15:49

Just seen the photo, gorgeous!

OmicronPersei7 · 21/02/2021 15:49

@ScoobyBlues

It's gorgeous.

I just walked in to Tiffany with mine, you don't need proof that it's from there. They must be able to tell.

Mine is marked with a Tiffany hallmark. Apparently, if you have it resized anywhere else, it can remove / damage the hallmark which wipes hundreds (or thousands?) off the value!!! Shock

Stunning

But I would absolutely go to Tiffany first.

Send them several photos with the problem. They can judge from that.

Gazelda · 21/02/2021 15:51

Oh gosh. I have huge ring envy. That is completely gorgeous.

It'll be Worth every penny to get it redone at Tiffany.

OmicronPersei7 · 21/02/2021 15:51

This makes me feel so much better!!

@StarlitTrees

I'm sure it was on here that I read about someone sending an expensive necklace in for repair at a jewellers and received a cheaper necklace back in the end. The moral of that story was to make sure wherever you take it make sure a very detailed accurate receipt of the ring is written and given to you when you leave it with them or you don't have a leg to stand on!
Yes, I remember that thread. It had been an 18 ct necklace and was replaced with 9 ct (and poor quality) chain. I would imagine you'll be fine if you go to Tiffanys themselves but if you go to a smaller jeweller do make sure you get them to sign a receipt stating the materials and description of the ring.
Ninkanink · 21/02/2021 15:52

Yes they would be able to re apply the Tiffany hallmark if needed (if the band is re-done entirely, for example).

Mydogruns · 21/02/2021 15:54

Beautiful ring - congrats!

rwalker · 21/02/2021 15:55

Very disappointed with this thread thought it was someone moaning about getting shit engagement ring and getting there arse handed to them in replies lol

lovely ring loads of option resize stretch piece put in or new band .

Teddy1970 · 21/02/2021 15:56

Bentley & Skinner the Queens jewellers?

Viviennemary · 21/02/2021 15:58

Size L is tiny. Please don't attempt to slim down into it. If it's worth a lot resizing by 4 sizes could devalue it as could making a new band. Its something you will have to discuss with your partner. I agree with taking it to Tiffanys and see what they suggest.

Is size L tiny? My rings are L and whilst my hands are small, I wouldn't say they're tiny!
C152 · 21/02/2021 16:02

Are you in the UK? If so, take it to a jeweller in Hatton Garden. I had my grandmother's ring re-sized there and it was actually really reasonable (only about £40 to make it smaller) and the work was impeccable; you can't tell it's been re-sized at all.

You could try calling a few jewellers in that area first, to talk to them about what can be done, prices, and whether they arrange secure transport or whether it's best to wait until lockdown ends and you can take it in yourself.

It sounds like a beautiful ring. I hope you can get it re-sized.

IHaveBrilloHair · 21/02/2021 16:07

Oh wow, its beautiful

PurpleRainDancer · 21/02/2021 16:08

Beautiful ring, whatever you do contact Tiffany first.
