Engagement ring much MUCH too small

Perhaps this belongs in Style and Beauty, I don’t know? I’m a bit stuck.

My new engagement ring is a 40 year old solitaire sapphire Tiffany ring in platinum. Flanked by 2 diamonds in the shank. RRP: insane.

It is size L. And my fat fingers are a whopping P by comparison.

I’m not in love with the idea of sending it away for resizing due to the value. So, I’m going to have to organise something in a few weeks.

I have this sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach that it will not be able to be resized by the required 4 sizes. What jeweller would even attempt it when they could damage something so expensive?

Just wondering if anyone else has any experience in this ball park?

Obviously, I have stopped eating, in case this helps the situation.CakeHaloGrin

I’m so happy to be engaged and the ring is just ridiculously beautiful but all I can do is look at the box. I’m worried I’ll never be able to wear it.

Gorgeous ring, Op. Agree try Tiffany's first. The Bond Street branch provided fab service for me a few years ago fixing a diamond necklace.

Ohdeariedear · 21/02/2021 16:10

That’s a gorgeous ring (I’m biased though as it’s a very supersized yet similar version of mine.)

Straight back to Tiffany’s with it, I wouldn’t let anyone else near it!

jomeow1 · 21/02/2021 16:12

@Horsemad M is the uk average for women

BungleandGeorge · 21/02/2021 16:14

I was under the impression that a plain band like that was relatively easy to resize. The restrictions on sizing are usually if the band has stones set into it. I would definitely go to Tiffany as suggested
Beautiful ring, lucky you!

MrsRockAndRoll · 21/02/2021 16:15

It's stunning

Figgyboa · 21/02/2021 16:19

Wear it around your neck on a necklace until you can get it resized. Take it to Tiffany's when you can

AuldFox · 21/02/2021 16:20

This won’t be a problem, just take it to Tiffany.

Crosstrainer · 21/02/2021 16:22

I think - someone correct me if I’m wrong - that that should be easy to resize. I think it’s only eternity rings with channel set diamonds that are a real problem. (Even then, a local jeweller that I trust managed to take mine down a size with a lot of care). Definitely not a hopeless case - and it’s a beautiful ring.

MeAgainNotMeghan · 21/02/2021 16:22

It’s beautiful op wow

Docketpuo · 21/02/2021 16:23

I have a similar problem except mine is a family heirloom and there is some resistance to me changing the band. I was quoted around £600 with no guarantee as ring might be damaged by the process. Unfortunately I don't have that kind of money!

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 21/02/2021 16:24

Defo go to Tiffany.

Resizing is relatively easy on a simple band. I inherited my grandmother’s engagement ring and had that resized up by several sizes. The jeweller charged me for her time and a piece of “old gold”

nancywhitehead · 21/02/2021 16:24

Congrats on your engagement!

Nice idea to wear it around your neck.

Also, this might be a bit presumptuous, but is it a family piece passed down to your OH? Would it be possible for him to get you another ring (if he can afford it) that you can wear as a token of your engagement until you decide what to do with this one?

It's just a bit sad that you've been given a ring that isn't really right for you, beautiful as it is.

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/02/2021 16:24

Tiffany have incredible customer service. Talk to them.

Wanderlusto · 21/02/2021 16:25

Refund or sell it.

Buy another one you like and anything left over you could save for the honeymoon or give to charity.

It does not fit and that's that. I know it's tough to engage common sense brain when looking at a pretty shiny thing but, theres really no point in an engagement ring you have to diet to wear.

Havana7 · 21/02/2021 16:25

The same ring with the same pic has just been listed on eBay today, have you decided to sell?

lazylump72 · 21/02/2021 16:27

The guy who presented you with that OP...he is a keeper! Your ring is beautiful I hope you can get it resized and enjoy it every single day, Congratulations on your engagement x

Usagi12 · 21/02/2021 16:28

I love your ring 💕💕💕♥️

merryhouse · 21/02/2021 16:28

In the meantime, will it fit your little finger?

LionLily · 21/02/2021 16:30

Do not let anybody other than Tiffany touch that ring.
Any Tiffany employee would be thrilled to see that.

4Mongrels · 21/02/2021 16:31

Tiffany will do it for you. All their engagement rings are made as a size 6 (they use US sizing) and then they are sizes upon purchase.

Your ring (very beautiful) will be easy for them to resize as it’s a plain band. They’ll do a fantastic job, you won’t even be able to tell.

I’ve had rings resizes, repaired and even sent away for cleaning with them before, their repairs dept is superb. Whilst they have the ring it may be worth getting them to do an up to date valuation for insurance purposes. I have to get one every two years.

4Mongrels · 21/02/2021 16:32

Excuse typos!

🤔
billy1966 · 21/02/2021 16:35

@StarlitTrees

I'm sure it was on here that I read about someone sending an expensive necklace in for repair at a jewellers and received a cheaper necklace back in the end. The moral of that story was to make sure wherever you take it make sure a very detailed accurate receipt of the ring is written and given to you when you leave it with them or you don't have a leg to stand on!
This. Lots of photos and note any markings.

The story referenced was shocking.
It would never have occurred to me a jeweller would do this.

Indeed I have not!! Shock

I chose a very similar but much cheaper ring when we both looking online together. This engagement has been low on the “surprise” factor due to it being a second marriage for us both. And being almost 40. And being together for ages. We already have kids together etc.

Anyway, the total surprise was being given a posh, vintage, sapphire Tiffany’s ring instead of the tanzanite or pearl ones I picked out. I still can’t believe it.

Anyway, he did get it from eBay and the size wasn’t something he could select. He thought changing the size would be no problem. I was a little more like “but isn’t it a nightmare to upsize by more than 2!” (And then the panic set in)

Our local Tiffany’s is closed at the moment but I will be taking it there. We are really, really lucky that we can afford to have them do the work, because it won’t be free!

He proposed with it as it is, because he didn’t want to wait. Maybe this is bad form? I don’t know. I love him and I wouldn’t say no because my fingers are too fat for this incredible ring!!

Definitely do NOT plan on selling it. Unless I absolutely cannot get it resized.

But, by the sounds of it, from other MNers, it will be do-able...!!
