Engagement ring much MUCH too small

Perhaps this belongs in Style and Beauty, I don’t know? I’m a bit stuck.

My new engagement ring is a 40 year old solitaire sapphire Tiffany ring in platinum. Flanked by 2 diamonds in the shank. RRP: insane.

It is size L. And my fat fingers are a whopping P by comparison.

I’m not in love with the idea of sending it away for resizing due to the value. So, I’m going to have to organise something in a few weeks.

I have this sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach that it will not be able to be resized by the required 4 sizes. What jeweller would even attempt it when they could damage something so expensive?

Just wondering if anyone else has any experience in this ball park?

Obviously, I have stopped eating, in case this helps the situation.CakeHaloGrin

I’m so happy to be engaged and the ring is just ridiculously beautiful but all I can do is look at the box. I’m worried I’ll never be able to wear it.

It’s a gorgeous ring, OP. I don’t wear any jewellery regularly but I’m drooling over yours. I think my mum has a similar ring with an emerald that I’m hoping will get passed to me. But there is something about that deep blue sapphire.......

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 22/02/2021 14:30

@TomHardyAndMe

I’m guessing it can’t be swapped for a different size?

It’s vintage?

Its 40 years old, let's not get carried away Grin

I would contact Tiffany and ask if I were you. One of my bangles broke and they were able to fix it in a few days for £40!

ScoobyBlues · 22/02/2021 14:56

The reason Tiffany (and other high end jewellery) is expensive is not neccessarily because they use better diamonds or jewels than anyone else (diamonds are directly comparable by certificate details) its because you're paying for individual attention, in a luxuriously furnished shop in an expensive location, loads of advertising and an ongoing service (cleaning, valuation etc) as well as your piece of jewellery.

As I said 120 posts ago, I took my engagement ring to Tiffany and they redid the band and I only had to pay the cost of the extra platinum. They didn't charge me for the work, just the platinum and they didn't ask me if it was a Tiffany ring or whether I had bought it new or not.

Exhausteddog · 22/02/2021 15:14

@ScoobyBlues
How did that compare to another jewellers or workshop?

timegoesbysoslowly · 22/02/2021 15:16

Gorgeous ring and hope it is a genuine Tiffany, can't believe someone spent nearly £7000 on a ring from eBay! also why does the seller says it's worth double that amount but sold it for half off what's it's worth.

I bet you regret posting now! But I really really hope it's genuine and if so I'd be scared to wear it incase lost it, my ring cost £1500 and that makes me nervous. Not that I've worn it much in last year, all the hand washing I'm terrified to wear in incase take it off and forget it. I'm getting very forgetful lately.

ginsparkles · 22/02/2021 15:18

I work in a jewellers. We are able to take repairs in and get the work done during lockdown. So contact a good independent jewellery who will organise an appointment for you to drop it off, measure your finger and then get it sized for you. It's best to let them size your finger as different rings for differently and need different sizes.

Based on the sizes given its 4 sizes which shouldn't be an issue with a claw set simple style ring. I would also ask them to check the claws as it is 40 years old.

ginsparkles · 22/02/2021 15:19

Oh and re the hallmark, it shouldn't come out during sizing. Mention it to the jeweller

I do regret posting but, mostly because I think this thread could “out” me. I think the ring is quite unique. Ha ha. Might ask MNHQ to take it down. Oh boo!

It’s a beautiful ring, hands down I would take it to Tiffany there is no doubt they will do a good job. I’d take great joy wearing it (just make sure you get the prongs checked regularly as with only 4 they’re a bit more susceptible to losing the stone)

NeedToGetOuttaHere · 22/02/2021 15:38

Congratulations on your engagement.

For pricing do you mean? I don't see how it could have been any cheaper anywhere else as I was only charged for the exact amount of platinum that was needed at the price of platinum on the day I took it in.

Exhausteddog · 22/02/2021 17:32

ah ok, I just presumed they would be as expensive for repairs as they are for sales.
or whether they set their own prices for metal which potentiallly could incorporate a labour charge.

ScoobyBlues · 22/02/2021 17:59

No it wasn't expensive at all. They also clean it for free if you take it in.

OmicronPersei7 · 28/02/2021 17:47

Hi folks, update: Tiffany’s do NOT resize any ring that was not purchased directly from them. This was direct news from phone call with Tiffany’s. If you purchase a Tiffany’s second hand, or from a reseller, they will not help. I don’t know if this is a new rule or an old rule or whatever. And yes, I offered to pay!

Phoned around a few places. They all said “yep, that’s the policy” “Tiffany’s don’t have great after sales” and blah blah. Had some lovely chats with lovely people. Then I picked the one I felt best about.

So, ring has gone to jeweller that is reasonably nearby who specialises in Tiffany’s. Valued, confirmed as real Tiffany’s and being resized.

In the mean time, I’m wearing an Argos special on that finger. Grin We call it my “enfakement” ring.

Anyway, that’s my update so far. Pictures of ring on my actual finger to follow soon, hopefully!!

OmicronPersei7 · 28/02/2021 17:51

And for anyone that’s wondering, I obviously went for the fake Kate and Lady Di Argos glitter bomb in sterling and cubic zircon. It’s ridiculous and I’m loving it. You should all buy one.

Gazelda · 28/02/2021 18:02

OP, I'm so thrilled that you've got confirmation of the rings's authenticity. A beauty like that deserves all the certification and accolades it can get!
I'm very excited to see pics of it resized and in its rightful place on your finger.

In the meantime, enjoy your enfakement ring. Flash it like a princess.

MrsRockAndRoll · 28/02/2021 18:29

I hope you're delighted with your own ring when it's returned.

Love "enfakement"very witty 😂

billy1966 · 28/02/2021 18:31

Lovely update.

sapnupuas · 28/02/2021 18:35

We need to see the fake ring.

BungleandGeorge · 28/02/2021 20:24

Did they say how they will alter the size? Do they stretch the band or insert a bit more metal?
I’d say Tiffany service is brilliant if you buy direct from them!

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 28/02/2021 20:51

Ooh yes let’s see the fake ring!

Glad you got sorted - time to book the wedding!

Exhausteddog · 28/02/2021 21:01

Glad you were able to find someone to resize it for you.
And please report back.
Will be good to hear that "other" jewellers can deal with a tiffany ring!Wink

Puzzledandpissedoff · 28/02/2021 21:46

Fantastic news that your exquisite ring turned out to be "the real thing", OP Smile

Just to add that I was the poster whose independent jeweller swapped my 18ct necklace for a 9ct, and I learned a hard lesson to always get a receipt wih a full description when leaving anything in future

I do hope you did the same ...?

HollyBollyBooBoo · 03/03/2021 11:40

Such a lovely update! Can't wait to see it !
