Found my knickers in stepdaughter's drawer

So, our stepdaughter rarely puts clothes/undies in the wash. Common teenage habit perhaps. Today I'm at home tidying up and went into her drawers to hunt out dirty clothes. I found three pairs of my own g strings in there, all very visibly worn.
Do I say anything? Tell my partner?
V bizarre I know. I'm also now thinking I probably shouldn't have gone into her drawers in future...!

Back on topic - you're going to have to have a tactful word about SD throwing used/dirty clothes Inc underwear back into a drawer instead of the laundry basket (she has her own laundry basket doesn't she, it's not teenage embarrassment about her undies being seen).

If she does this, she won't run out and won't be in pinching yours.

merville · 24/01/2019 12:59

Ask her (not too harshly) how she'd feel if you were in pinching and wearing her underwear if you ran out - if she puts them in the laundry basket they'll get washed. If she wants more, you can buy more.

merville · 24/01/2019 13:07

Oh I see it's when you batge, in a bowl - so vefore, after (or while?) I take a bath or shower tonight I'm supposed to take 2 or 3 pairs of machine washable knickers and hand wash them in a bowl in the bathroom.

Oh that's ok then.

Bluerussian · 24/01/2019 13:29

No, you wash one pair at a time in a bowl. Honestly, I can't believe people not doing that, you don't save up knickers not do you get your mum to do them after puberty.

It seems not to be a UK thing but ask anyone, for example, of West Indian origin, no girl would allow someone else to wash their underwear unless they were ill, their mothers taught them that. It doesn't take long.

Please no-one come back to me on this any more, I'm giving up on it. It's certainly an eye opener.

Last thing I want is my kids messing with my laundry regime

Yeah I'm a bit possessive of my washer.

As for washing knickers in a bowl each night, that's just as weird as wearing other people's knickers like it's normal. Some seriously strange ideas when you get a group of people together. Hmm

I'm of west indian origin, (nan & grandad came over here) and I've never heard this nonsense. ALL clothes went in the laundry basket to be washed in the washing machine by my mum.

Now ALL clothes go in the laundry to be washed in the washing machine by dp or me.

Eliza9917 · 24/01/2019 14:06

@Bluerussian Just out of interest, why would you handwash them rather than just put them in the washing machine?

Can you read? I said no one on THIS THREAD.

I'm well aware of the case you mentioned, thanks very much.

Expensive designer g strings were cheap ??
Oxymoron

Foodylicious · 24/01/2019 17:21

Have you spoken to her OP?
Or just fine the washing and taken your pants back?

I would probably do the latter and not say anything about it.

She will know that you know. That should be enough.

Get her some more pants and a new laundry basket and tell her you saw them whilst shipping so got her some too.

Can understand not expecting someone else to wash your underwear after puberty (though many people in families wouldn't mind/make or much difference between underwear and outerwear) but as for washing pairs of knickers individually in a bowl by hand .... Bizarre if you have access to a washing machine.

This thread is sooo weird and amusing with people suggesting that thongs or g strings are out of fashion or inappropriate.

I wore my first thongs at 15 as I didnt want VPL. They were from tophop and my mum paid Shock How funny to think its an inappropriate form of clothing for your daughter...im genuinely baffled. And the CK underwear is very much in fashion at the mo (im old and even i have some £18 for one thong Confused) and why shouldn't she have fancy undies for xmas if thats what she wants.

People piss me off sometimes! Oh and i didnt do my own washing til i left home either...

Ok its gross that shes not wearing clean clothes i hope you can find away to address it.

Bbub · 24/01/2019 22:21

littlemeitslyn

OP is saying her step daughter was bought expensive ones for xmas..and the ones of the OPs that SD took were cheap.

Justwantednicethings · 24/01/2019 22:31

I was this teenager Blush

To be fair my family were poor so I would nick things from my mums drawer, as in my mum wouldn’t (or couldn’t probably) buy me a bra that fitted as I got whoppers by 14. So I took hers.

Once you get in the habit of “borrowing” though you just borrow everything you like.

As for putting them in the drawer dirty. That’s down to literally not having a clue that things can be cleaned without the washing machine and being scared to put them in the washing machine and getting found out!

jessstan2 · 25/01/2019 05:01

I wonder if the op has sorted this problem yet.

I'm with bluerussian about doing own laundry. It used to be the thing that when girls started periods (or just before), they'd be taught to do it, get blood stains out with cold water etc., not save them up for days to go in the washing machine. It doesn't have to be at night, not everyone has a bath or shower at night, could be in the morning if there is time (or midday at weekends!).

It does seem old fashioned to some I suppose but I tend to still do it, but I am a lot older than many on here.

Another thing which I know people do is give their kids wash bags, netty things, to put their own stuff in to go in the machine. Separating whites, darks and lights. That's not a bad idea. They do that in boarding schools so washing doesn't get mixed up with other people's. I boarded for a while and our clothes were sent to a central laundry but we all washed our pants and sox or tights every night and put them on pipes and radiators :-). Those were the days (we were lucky to have pipes and radiators, it was still bloody cold). We each had a number on our clothes done with a marker so no-one would put on someone else's stuff.

At fifteen the girl shouldn't be expecting mum or anyone else to wash their bits and pieces. I think she would like to do it herself, it's probably just not occurred to her.

Good luck op, hope things are improving on that score.

LeSquigh · 25/01/2019 11:13

I’m sorry that your thread got out of hand OP!

Typical batshit Mumsnet behaviours, 15 year olds not being able to wear thongs, doing their own washing, hand washing their pants in the sink, not washing them with other items of clothing. Hilarious!
