Would you do a test even though you knew you weren't

Hi all,

What would you all do in my situation? DH and I have been told that we have less than a 1% chance of getting pregnant naturally (problems on both sides) and we have had one failed IVF attempt, which although worked, it didn't stick and we had what the clinic classed as an early miscarriage. We were told to keep trying naturally which we have, although not religiously (I really struggled with the first round and now believe that my body doesn't work anyway so what's the point). We are waiting for a second round, I just need to lose a bit more weight before we can do so, but my weight loss is steady, not drastic and I've been regular throughout so don't think this is the cause, but my period is now 6 days late with no signs of showing up (none of my normal pmt symptoms). I am normally fairly regular. Is there any point in doing a test and being disappointed even though I know really there is no chance of being pregnant, or would you just wait it out until it arrives. I could I guess being perimenopausal (I'm 38). I have no signs that would make me think I could be pregnant, apart from fatigue (which isn't a new thing to me). Don't really know why I am posting, just wondered what others would do? x

So many people have been through the same as we are going through, you just don't realise until you use forums like this and get others views etc, how common this really is. I am so happy for those it has worked out for, goes to show that if you carry on believing, things can happen the way you want in the end x

I hope it works out for you, whatever the result.

VimFuego101 · 12/09/2018 14:06

I completely understand regarding not wanting to test and preferring to hold on to the 'maybe'. I felt exactly the same way.

Boyicantwait2beamumagain · 12/09/2018 14:29

Good luck op! I really hope you get your miracle! Flowers

Well AF is still not here this morning, so, if still not here by lunch time, I will be popping into town to get a test for Saturday morning.. Are there any recommended ones which don't cost the earth but will give a reliable result? I can't justify spending a fortune on one given our chances, but nor can I deal with getting one which gives a 'meh' answer.. At the moment I am thinking of every reason under the sun why AF hasn't arrived, and not one of those reasons is me being pregnant!! I will update you all whatever the result if we get that far, I at least owe you all that much for your support & understanding xx

Everyone seems to go for the First Response Early Result test. It is about £7 from boots I think

Franwith2and1 · 13/09/2018 06:52

As far as I know the cheap ones are just as good. I used ones that were about 10 for a fiver from Ebay 11 years ago and got faint positives 10 days before my period was due. He is now a strapping 11 year old ivf frosty baby! A week overdue you will get a strong positive with any peestick if you are pregnant. I say go to pound shop! Good luck I really hope it’s the right result

DoAsYouWouldBeMumBy · 13/09/2018 07:06

Good luck, @Whatisthishelp Smile

Whatisthishelp · 13/09/2018 07:10

Thanks ladies, I'll have a look at lunch time. I'll guarantee if I buy one, AF will either arrive tomorrow or Saturday morning when I am about to test!! x

It doesn’t sound like menopause - ime part of perimenopause is your periods making themselves very obvious and frequent & announcing themselves in all sorts of ways.

picklemepopcorn · 13/09/2018 07:13

I'm a fan of not testing, unless there are medical reasons to need to know early. I'd rather be 'late' until I'm definitely not, IYSWIM.

Whatever you do, do it feeling supported by a load of randoms on MN!

TulipsInBloom1 · 13/09/2018 07:14

Just think of it as ruling it out. Your period hasnt arrived and one of the many reasons is pregnancy. Tell yourself you know it isnt pregnancy but it needs officially ruling out. Tell yourself the test will be negative.

Best if luck!!

YesitsJacqueline · 13/09/2018 07:18

I definitely wasnt pregnant! I was showing everyone my back ache was something sinister and no one was taking me seriously. I'd had endometriosis for 20 years and the doctors told dp he was sterile.
That bfp started school this week ! Stranger things have happened x

Kintan · 13/09/2018 07:20

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you :) x

NewtScamandersNaughtyNiffler · 13/09/2018 07:25

Fingers crossed for you OP

12sillypenguins · 13/09/2018 07:29

Good luck 😁

Sunshinegirl82 · 13/09/2018 07:32

In terms of test my main tip would be to look for pink dye rather than blue. Blue dye tests are awful for weird lines and evaps.

A first response early result would probably be your best bet. If you have Amazon Prime you could order online and they'd be with you tomorrow.

Lweji · 13/09/2018 07:35

If you know when you ovulated and that was over 20 days ago, it's most likely that you're pregnant.
Even, fingers crossed not, if the worst happens, it does mean that you can get pregnant. 1% or not.

ChaseMe · 13/09/2018 07:43

Good luck OP

LouHotel · 13/09/2018 07:47

Superdrug are inexpensive but reliable or boots do an own brand.

You could order via Amazon if you can't face buying in a shop, that way if your period comes before Saturday you can throw the test away in the packaging without having to look at the box.

Good luck op. X

Honeybee79 · 13/09/2018 07:49

Cheap ones are as good as any op.

Am keeping everything crossed for you.

We were told no chance of conceiving and had 2 kids via ivf. Then guess what... Am now pregnant with DC3 purely by accident as we thought we couldn't so didn't bother with contraceptionGrin

Whatisthishelp · 13/09/2018 07:55

Surprising how a load of lovely ladies you will never likely meet, can spur you on and give you confidence. I am listening to you all and really appreciate you taking the time to respond, I must be driving you all crazy ha ha!

Thanks for the tips about pink dye as opposed to blue, that's one thing I wouldn't have thought of!

Avoid the Superdrug pink ones - they are awful and so unreliable.
