Brave Babes (Hygge) Battle Bus: Snowed in and Drinking Hot Chocolate instead of wine

SweetLathyrus · 01/03/2018 16:17

Hi, I'm SweetLathyrus, Sweet for short, and I've been on and off Gerald the Brave Babes Battle Bus since 2014. Over the years, lots of us have maintained the thread, most of all the lovely Mouse, who has been here since the early days, and still scurries onboard when she can.

The bus is a place of support, safety and occasional silliness for those of us struggling with our relationship with alcohol. Some of us are sober, some are trying to be, some are moderating and aren't ready to give up alcohol just yet.

So whatever your reason for questioning the whys and WTFs of your drinking, hop on board, make yourselves comfortable and join in. Driers and Triers, all welcome.

2018 has been a busy year so far, lots of new travellers as well as old faces; if you want to read back on the journey through Dry or Dryer Jan and Feb so far, here's the link to the last thread

And in case you want to know how it all started, here is the link to JWN's original, inspiring thread

We've donned the snow chains, topped up the antifreeze, and turned the heaters up to loud, so even though it's cold outside, our welcome is always warm, so hop on and join us.

Oh no what a pain Trust the weather must be dreadful if Asda can't make it...Go carefully and make sure you stock up on treats

venusandmars · 02/03/2018 08:05

Bloody snow! Dp is 'working' from home again. He's lovely, but I don't need a running commentary about his office politics, not while I'm trying to concentrate. And then he starts 'tidying'..... not real tidying, just picking things up and asking me where they should go - all while I'm trying to concentrate because I do actually WORK from home!!

I have to brave the snow and cold and wind and go out today, not a long journey but really 100% absolutely, legally necessary.

Keep warm babes, and send the bus to rescue me if I get stuck!

Trust2017 · 02/03/2018 08:39

Thanks sequins have just poked my head out of the door and it is bitter! Not so much the snow but that wind!
Lol Venus that made me laugh about your DP. My DH sometimes goes into his home office to do “paperwork” and is generally to be found watching football matches on his computer but he only just that minute put it on!

SweetLathyrus · 02/03/2018 08:44

Morning All.

It's cold here but the snow has stopped for now, I'll be working from home too.

Venus Grin DH has lived here exactly the same number of year, days, minutes and seconds as me, but still leaves Tupperware out on the worktop when it comes out of the dishwasher because he doesn't know where it goes (clue: it's the cupboard next to the dishwasher!)

I may have to venture out for emergency hot chocolate, DS brought friends home yesterday for HC - they drank all my lovely Clipper Instant - "Because it's nicer than the Cadburys" - I have raised a beverage snob!

morning all. another snow day, another day with not so "d" h. This weather is unbelievable, even for us.
Think I will trek round to mothers later and possibly stay over. she is on her own and could use the company. and it gets me out of here

SweetLathyrus · 02/03/2018 09:01

That sounds like a plan, Ma

Snowing again in Hampshire. I am very pleased that Friday is my WFH day anyway. SweetDog is alternating between lying in the snow in the garden and lying in his bed in front of the fire.

The upside of the snow is that what I really want to drink is warming fruit tea and hot chocolate and even if I wanted wine, there's nothing I would drink in the house and I am not going out!

OP posts:
rothbury · 02/03/2018 13:02

WFH here as well. I am a real homebird so it doesn't bother me at all being cooped up for weeks days, so long as I can make tea.
I don't have a wankbadger husband to contend with though Sad Bloody bravery medals all round to the babes dealing with DP/DH shite when you are thrown together like this.

My weekend away is definitely cancelled. I should be doing a lot more work than I am but I just cannot be arsed. I don't know what is wrong with me but I feel quite apathetic at the moment.

Tesco delivery due tomorrow, fingers crossed.

SmallFox · 02/03/2018 13:26

WFH here too, though slightly resent the amount I’m spending on heating, and can still barely type with the three pairs of gloves I’m wearing simultaneously.

Belatedly dragging myself onto the bus and collapsing in a pool of damp woolly clothing - thanks for the lovely new thread, Sweet. Always been a bit doubtful about what hygge actually means in practice, but its clearly a thing, and the bus is looking very zen as a result (though Barrie is looking a bit uncomfortable in front of that stove).

Bit grumpy that its too frozen to go for a run - at this rate I’m going to lose what tiny bit of momentum I’d acquired. Have compensated by buying far too many running accoutrements in the Sweaty Betty sale. At least it shows I’m thinking about it.

Kids dispatched to school for belated world book day - was up til all hours making random bits of costume like a 70s blue peter presenter. No time to think about drinking, though the outfits might have been more inspired if I had.

Bit nervous of friday evening, for some reason. Feel like I’ve been cooped up and ‘deserve’ a drink to demarcate the end of the week. Hmm.

SweetLathyrus · 02/03/2018 14:04

Small Calamari for lunch?! Wink. I don't miss the constant 'costuming' of small persons - I was always too proud and a bit skint (and inversely snobbish) to buy, but also time poor and very competitive/perfectionist - bad combination. I still have the fickin' awesome Gruffalo mask I crafted for DS for his first World Book Day (he's 16 this month). Somewhere in the attic, there is also a Roman soldiers helmet, tunic and armour, and angel wings with battery operated fairy lights stitched around the edges. Oh, actually, the Roman tunic is used every year around the base of one of our Christmas trees because it's red crushed velvet!

Rothbury I'm having trouble staying on task too. Sorry about your weekend, how practical is rescheduling?

LuxuryWoman2017 · 02/03/2018 14:44

I always WFH so I'm used to it but school is out, my food delivery has been cancelled and it's snowing again.
On the plus side I have loads of hot chocolate and coffee.

Hope everyone is safe and stays warm

Sequinsofcourse · 02/03/2018 14:53

I'm on the train home, have left work early because the heating has stopped working at home. It happened this morning but I had to go to work so I'm going home to fix it Hmm now. Will then collect the kids from school.
I still feel a bit rubbish after the flu and need to relax this weekend. Fingers crossed I manage it

dementedma · 02/03/2018 18:07

Calamari!?

SweetLathyrus · 02/03/2018 18:21

My mum still puts the electric blanket on for me when I stay - it's lovely to climb into for about a minute, then I'm pushing off the covers and gasping for air!

Ma I love a hot water bottle. Have a nice night with your Mum.

Sweet Your costumes sound amazing. I made a hungry caterpillar one last year. DS refused to wear it. In fairness it was a bit of a mess so we bought Paddington this year. I actually meant to go out today and see if there were any reduced costumes but I forgot

We've been really lucky weather wise. No snow since Tuesday We're kind of between Emma and the Beast so haven't really been badly affected. Twattage Did you see Dorset on the news today? Bet you're glad you didn't attempt the journey yesterday. Lux and Trust Bad news about the food deliveries. Venus I hope your journey went ok.

I have made it to day 60 AF! And I've been nicotine free for 6 (!) weeks. I'm proud. Never thought I'd manage so long. My stress over how to socialise without either tomorrow night has been solved as there's no trains in or out of the city after 7pm (same as today) and I can't face driving. Hope you're all having a good evening. Stay safe in the snow.

dementedma · 02/03/2018 18:47

the garden today.
well done on 60 days cupcakes

Evening all - baking - yes I saw the footage. My mummy has been sending me a non-stop stream of emails regarding the traffic and travel. Many people were stuck in cars and trains in the location where I live when not working in London!

I am in the sidecar hence not posting too much. We have been out for pizza and I also had a massive panini at lunch. I am stuffed to the gills on cheese :).

Current plan is to go down to the coast tomorrow until Sunday and pick up the skiing gear. I have been talking to our instructor on messenger and now getting v excited and he has also sent me a video from the place where we are going.

My new ski stuff arrived yesterday as well - need to try on the salopettes at some point. I was tempted to not try them and then wondered what will happen on day 1 if they are too tight!

In other news, I am in contract negotiation with my client. They are playing hardball and so am I, as there will be a requirement for both weekend and out of hours working in the next 6 months. They seem to think it may be fine for that to be unpaid FFS - well they'd better get a grip as I am one feisty female and absolutely no contract is being signed as yet...

Right - am watching a replay of the athletics, must think about bed, just realised the time. xxx

Twattage13 · 02/03/2018 23:41

Also done jack shit today...frankly could not be arsed. x

rothbury · 03/03/2018 09:04

venus I want to believe you are a vicar who marries people at the side of mountains Grin

or a very good photographer

It's very icy here but my boiler seems to be behaving and the snow is slowly disappearing. I guess it will be all back to normal next week.

I feel sort of stuck, like I am waiting for something to happen, in limbo. Probably because I am waiting to move house later this year, and also because of huge changes going on at work which could impact me a lot. I keep thinking "what's the point of doing that?"

All set for a period of complete AF after this weekend until Easter at least, although I probably won't want to start again if I last that long. I don't think moderating is working for me. It's a hard pill to swallow.

bakingcupcakes · 03/03/2018 09:22

Ma That's a massive amount of snow. Venus I feel a bit sorry for the wedding party. They were probably expecting a spring wedding with spring flowers not loads of snow and a person on skis. It looks very winter wonderland though. We've had a tiny bit more overnight but not much.

How is your ski stuff Twattage?

Rothbury I'm tempted to try moderating again having been AF for 2 months but I don't think I'm capable either.

I'm trying to decide what to do with DS today. He wants to go to Smyth's Toys I don't but I need to collect something from a town in the opposite direction. I said we'd eat out today too but if we go to Smyth's we'll end up in McDonald's and I was thinking more of a pub lunch. For some reason I'm a bit lonely today. Normally I don't mind doing stuff just us but I'm not feeling it today.

Tomorrow I'm working. I don't usually on a Sunday but it's a conference type thing so I have too. DS is getting a Sunday dinner at my parents, I'm getting a sandwich when I get home! Joy.

Twattage13 · 03/03/2018 09:34

Morning

baking - ski stuff is brill. So if you remember I was on the hunt for the white salopettes. Found some on a site but then also saw another whole outfit in the sale for less than £100. So I bought it all.

So now I have a pink & green top and some green trousers, as well as the other pink jacket and white bottoms. I'm v happy. I do need to put the trousers on but possibly not post-pizza today. Sent a photo to my instructor, who said the he definitely won't lose me anywhere this year.

I'm looking forward to going totally AF when I'm back from skiing I must say. xxxf

Sequinsofcourse · 03/03/2018 09:34

Hi all.

I had a couple of glasses of wine last night, I went out for tea so had decided in advance I would. I was so tired and the wine made me feel so dreadful and I just wanted to go to sleep. It was horrible.
I would have been better off just being tired without the wine.
I can't believe how tired I have been this week it is awful I can barely function. I am assuming it is post flu bloody hope so

dementedma · 03/03/2018 13:01

I am so fucking fed up of this weather!!!
