It was all going so well until he said he voted Leave.

I am sure conflicting politics is a common problem. Shudder. For someone to vote for such a destructive step as flippantly as he said: "just to see what happens" concerns me somewhat.

Aside from that he is very nice. How does one decide whether to take things forward? I guess time will tell? But then.... isnt it more difficult to extract yourself when you are more physically and emotionally entangled.

Oh dear, I don't know what to do. Only had relationship with ex (long term marriage ) & flings. Not sure how things work.

I do like him. But... he voted Leave. And doesnt read. And has lived in thr same place with his family all 4 decades of his live. I read (or did before kids!) & have travelled a bit..... are we compatible?

Oh dear - I sound like I am looking down on his experiences but I guess they are just different ...

Eek

Can the leavers posting on here answer fakes question please?

Why would anyone want to answer a bigot whose views are backed up by facebook?

Oblomov17 · 23/08/2017 11:52

I'm surprised this is such a deal-breaker for you.
Dh and I have a lot more in common, basics that hold a relationship together over 20 years, than things that differentiate us.

Dh and I have quite different political ideas and never discuss our voting. We consider it private.

And I agree with the flippant remark, ie "I don't want to talk about this" on a date.

And not every leave voter is stupid or racist. What if you wanted neither? What if you were seriously concerned for where the EU was going, their foundations and the fundamental driving force of it, having considered and read up in detail on its history? But at the same time, realising it has done a lot of good of kind of forcing the Uk Govn to accept employee rights that they might not have implemented themselves. And not agreeing with the NHS 250 million nonsense slogan, and finding Farage and Boris, ridiculous.

What if you are genuinely torn and don't want to vote for either?

1/2 the populaltion, almost, voted either way. It was practically a 50/50 split. But not all voters are racist idiots.

flapflops · 23/08/2017 11:52

He'll probably get tired of you thinking your opinion holds the moral high ground and vote to leave you to save you the job.

Bibidy · 23/08/2017 11:53

Calling people who voted leave 'thick' and 'uneducated' and completely disregarding their right to an opinion because it doesn't agree with your own is probably one of the main reasons why so many people voted that way in the first place.

People have a variety of reasons as to why they voted the way they did - both to Leave and to Remain. Given that the results were practically 50/50, how can people possibly dismiss half of the voting population as stupid?

Knope2020 · 23/08/2017 11:56

Latest polling shows over a 1/4 of those who voted leave regret it and that they believed the £350 million the nhs lies....

Knope2020 · 23/08/2017 11:57

It seems to really annoy some of you that lots of leave voters are not well educated or employed...
Why is that??

Knope2020 · 23/08/2017 11:58

Please point out where I - or anyone else - used the word "thick" please?

Knope2020 · 23/08/2017 12:00

Ha ha
Moral high ground?
Not voting the same way as people like the EDL makes me feel morally superior?
Yes it does!!

YokoReturns · 23/08/2017 12:00

There's a theory that Leave v Remain is actually 'somewhere' vs 'anywhere'. 'Somewheres' have usually lived in the same place all their life, didn't go to uni etc. whereas 'anywheres' left home to go to uni and have lived away from their hometown during their adult life.

I would imagine it's tough for a 'somewhere' to be in a relationship with an 'anywhere' and vice versa, due to different outlooks and experience.

BoneyBackJefferson · 23/08/2017 12:01

Knope

Where did you get the figures from?

Unless they are from a neutral source they really aren't worth much.

It seems to really annoy some of you that lots of leave voters are not well educated or employed...
Why is that??

Because it is used as an excuse to belittle people's views and opinions and make it seem that their experiences are worthless.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 23/08/2017 12:02

The way it's said is sneering and nasty mostly.

I voted remain but some of the vitriol from remain voters is ridiculous.

Let's not also think that remain voters all thought hard about their vote or voted the way they did for serious well argued reasons, because they didn't.

allegretto · 23/08/2017 12:04

Voting leave wouldn't be a deal breaker for me but voting leave "just to see what happens" definitely would be. My family are already suffering because of Brexit and I couldn't cope with someone having this flippant attitude to something so crucial for so many.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 23/08/2017 12:04

Not voting the same way as people like the EDL makes me feel morally superior?

Well there are some of those that voted remain, the same way I did that I wouldn't want to be associated with.

That sort of argument goes round in circles.

IceMagic · 23/08/2017 12:05

Some info here

Knope2020 · 23/08/2017 12:07

It's all a bit irrelevant anyway isn't it?
We are leaving the EU...
Whatever that actually means. No.one seems quite sure, do they?
Op...i hope this thread has been helpful?

Joysmum · 23/08/2017 12:07

Because it is used as an excuse to belittle people's views and opinions and make it seem that their experiences are worthless

Yes!

Plus that I've yet to see anyone who levels the accusation about eduction with that intention ever admit they'd never considered that older voters never had the educational opportunities which are much higher now so obviously an older demographic would be skewed towards a lower educational achievement than a younger demographic.

That's what seeing only what you want to believe will do for you. Wink

Knope2020 · 23/08/2017 12:08

Thanks for the info Ice

Jayne35 · 23/08/2017 12:08

Oh yes, just dismiss it, nothing to look at here, no racists here. Or, you could go and look at their facebook pages, racists posts getting hundreds of likes and ask what you are aligning yourself with

Most leave voters aren't even members of those ridiculous facebook groups, or even all on facebook for that matter BUT if it's on facebook it must be true yes Hmm

BlackStars · 23/08/2017 12:08

Latest polling shows over a 1/4 of those who voted leave regret it and that they believed the £350 million the nhs lies....

How many Remainers regret their vote? or haven't they bothered polling that?

Jellybean85 · 23/08/2017 12:09

For me it would depend why a person voted the way they did. I don't necessarily think voting leave is akin to voting for a right wing party as some have said!

I have intelligent lovely friends who truly believe immigration is a benefit but that the EU is stretched financially and beureoucratically and that it will fail or more countries will suffer like Greece and Portugal.

ImKait · 23/08/2017 12:11

If "most people" you know who voted leave are "raging racists", I think it speaks more about the company you choose keep than 52% of the voting population.

SerfTerf · 23/08/2017 12:12

knope we won't heal this national rift by stereotyping each other.

There are plenty of well-heeled leavers and skint remainers.

MsHarry · 23/08/2017 12:12

You don't like him, you feel superior, therefore it has no future.

Happytobefree17 · 23/08/2017 12:13

Are you sure he didn't say this in jest?

Joysmum · 23/08/2017 12:13

Latest polling shows over a 1/4 of those who voted leave regret it and that they believed the £350 million the nhs lies....

And how many Remainers voted that way based on how things are today and fear of change with little thought that the EU will be as different in the next 15 years as it is today from 15 years ago despite us trying and failing to block changes.

Many failed to appreciate that a vote to remain was not just a vote to accept the EU as is and continues to evolve despite U.K. opposition despite 'being at the table'.
