Good evening. My AA group was v busy tonight, presumably because of the run up to Chrustmas. I was knackered but I thought "keep coming back" and I'm glad I did. It's becoming clear to me that AA is such a huge "thing" beyond just not drinking that day. I've loads and loads of questions but I was too nervous to ask anyone there and dashed off. Sad

How's everyone doing? Are you having booze free houses over Christmas?

Report
Umpteen · 23/12/2015 23:47

Hi Marry! Not booze-free here but DH is in charge of buying and pouring it, which will be probably be fine as nobody drinks very much. I don't think I'll feel too jealous, but I'm not feeling completely confident about that.

Brill links, Lucy, to the Guardian and the trailer to what looks like a great show. That's you, innit? Grin

Marry booze free at the mo but in-laws are coming tomorrow and will be bringing their own booze as we've offered to drive them home :) Not too worried as this is our 3rd sober Xmas so it's not missed here.
Umpteen Xmas Grin that's actually Lucy Rocca from Soberistas - unless you mean the lady with the multi-coloured dreads? Xmas Wink

Aha. Sorry Lucy. Xmas Blush

How's everyone doing? I'm a bit inundated with sick elderly relatives but am delighted that my young-adult children are diluting the sick-room atmosphere with a lot of hilarity and baking. I fleetingly thought of drinking just now as I started peeling more sodding veg - ooh, wouldn't a dry sherry be nice? Well no, obviously, it would lead to a bit of a disaster. So, tea and chocolate, again.

PS I love it when my DC keep telling me how proud they are of me for not drinking. Yay! (Obviously I feel guilty at how much they hated me drunk, goes without saying, of course).

Merry Christmas all! I'm
In Australia so it's late Xmas morning here. We had our big family lunch yesterday, as we always do, with about 20 people at my mums house eating a big turkey lunch on the deck followed by a swim in the pool and then home to get the kids all ready for Santa and watch a Xmas movie etc. usually I would have had a few wines but I drove instead of DH.
Now we are in that lovely lull while the kids play with their presents before guests arrive for a buffet lunch, listening to carols etc - again, i would usually cheerfully be pouring a wine now but Ive had two coffees and currently having a tea and some cheese instead.... Im not missing it so far but we'll see!
Hope everyone is having a peaceful and fun Christmas so far SmileBrew

Merry Xmas fluke and all the Dry sober warriors! :) Hope you all had happy booze free Xmas's but appreciate how hard it is & the weight of the societal expectation & pressure. Be kind to yourself today if that plea of 'just one' or 'it is Christmas' gave you permission. Today is another day & I'm off for a run to counteract the monumental overeating I did yesterday Wink

Hi all. I didn't have a dry Christmas
I need to be honest Blush but I haven't had a drunk Christmas either. I'm a bit annoyed because I drank so little I could have gone without.
Despite drinking I still had an air of smugness about me when I saw people on Facebook posting about hangovers or photos of their booze stash!
I do want to be dry now I've decided that the only way for me is all or nothing
Im not going back to all. Hope you have all had a great time.

Merry Christmas all!

I didn't have a dry Christmas, but had not planned to. 5 nights off and will have a drink at Hogmanay. Then I will continue with the serious cutting down - i.e, I will not drink at home. Seeing as I rarely go out, this should work well Smile

I think I will be more successful with that initially and I am actually looking forward to it. I have had a rubbish sleep the past few nights due to alcohol, so looking forward to a good sleep again!

Hello all! How did we do today?

I felt the pull of the booze this evening when I was cooking, but I threw the bag of frozen broccoli I was carrying across the utility room in an angry outburst and that helped! The craving passed. Honestly, the things we do. Xmas Blush

Day 101. Keeping on keeping on.

Hi all. Having a pretty crappy Christmas here to be honest. PILs are very ill-trying to get a doctor to come out today. Other very elderly family relative who llives several hours away was hospitalised so DH went up and back Christmas eve then will go up again today.

I was not dry. Dry again today though. Did not go overboard but was definitely using it as a crutch. I have been so emotionally drained that I had nothing left to resist, and did not really want to either.

Poor DS has been brilliant. Playng quietly with his toys, happy to stay inside as PILs cannot really be left.

Merry Christmas!

Cheesy, having unwell PIL there must be EXTREMELY trying! I really feel for you!

My first dry Christmas ever apart from when I was pregnant! I'm sorely tempted by the champs in the fridge but was v pleased the next day that I hadn't drank it.

I downloaded the Dry January app and it reckons that I would have spent £230 on wine!!!Shock That's astonishing! And yet I think it's right, if not more. I'd tell myself that "after tonight I'm not drinking any more so this may as well be a good bottle." How foolish.
AA going ok, I highly recommend it once you've got over the terror of going!

Hi again.

Stupid question alert...... while I was distracted feeding ILs some soup I came upstairs to find DS eating a yoghurt. We have not had yoghurts since before Christmas.... in fact, i managed to forget to buy more on Christmas eve. From close questioning it seems DS squirreled the bloody yoghurt away in his toybox on Wednesday or Thursday along with some maltesers and frozen chocolate bars.

Fucking bleeding hell. He's going to get food poisoning isn't he? Is there anything I can do but wait and monitor?

Probably not . Monitor and be very aware of signs of trouble. D/V and feverish stuff, back aches etc. But probably will be ok :) If it was really rank, would he have eaten it? Would he have observed ( mine would, some SN kids would not )

Report
gladistopped · 27/12/2015 20:39

and frozen choc bars? Would have cooled everything down?

Report
CheesyNachos · 27/12/2015 20:48

I meant Elsa and Anna Frozen chocolate bars, not cold ones sorry!

Not sure he would have noticed if it was really rank, tnh..... (although he managed to locate the only shred of carrot in his sausage roll today.... ) Oh, there was anothr one in the box too I have chucked out in the bin unopened.... I'll go look at it.......

Just had a smell of the other one- smells okay. What worries me is that Ds is not that great at explaining things, understanding time etc. I narrowed it down half by talking with him and half by deduction that it must have been there since Wednesday or Thirsday at the latest. I don't stand to think it may have been longer.

I need to keep checking his room.....had no idea he stashed food like that.

It's good that the other one smelt okay Cheesy - I think these things are pretty sturdy. Hopefully he would have noticed if it was off - off dairy smells and tastes pretty rank. I've eaten yoghurt before which was well out of date and trusted my instinct. I haven't died yet! Wink

Stressful times here at home. Had a big day out with lots of drinkers on BDay and had to endure a massive cross-examination as to WHY I'd chosen to stop drinking. It felt like they weren't going to stop until I admitted I'd been a park-bench lush on a couple of bottles of vodka a day. Such hard work, couldn't wait to get home.

Umpteen · 27/12/2015 23:13

Sounds tiresome, Teapot. Their questioning of you was about them trying to reassure themselves that their drinking was normal. More about them than you. But intrusive and tiresome all the same.

Yoghurts, Cheesy, last waaaay longer than their dates, in my experience.

Blimey I'm tired of visitors. But still not drinking.

Report
CheesyNachos · 28/12/2015 06:29

Morning! Well, we seem to have survived the night incident-free. Even the ILs slept through the night. Thank God. Perhaps the various stuffed toys surrounding the yoghurts insulated them!!!!!

Teapot I agree with Umpteen the only people who care about what you drink are the ones who are worried about their own drinking...... and yes, I bet they wanted to be able to tally what you said with their own upper limits to reassure themselves. God, how boring though and draining for you.Well done on surviving that

Umpteen I am tired of visitors too. Thanks When do yours go home?

Hope no-one minds but I have taken the liberty of starting DRY 10. Link below.
