Teapot I think it is difficult to give a considered response to those comments in this kind of forum. As you say their response sounds defensive so nothing you say will likely be heard and you are also likely to get rebutted for trying!! Here's Prof Nutt's chart you were looking for and can't find the other one right now but will keep looking! :)

TeapotDictator · 29/07/2015 09:48

Thanks Lucy. I need to get better at not trying to change other people's minds.

Lucy2610 · 29/07/2015 09:57

Tis a wise strategy Teapot :) That whole serenity prayer thing - change the things you can, accept the things you can't and learn to know the difference between the two Wink Found this though:
Resveratrol is famous for giving the green light to people who want to consume alcohol, Heller said. "Many of my patients ask me, 'Should I start or continue to drink wine? It's heart-healthy, isn't it?'" she said. One of the reasons red wine in particular is considered heart-healthy is because of its resveratrol content, Heller said. However, alcohol in any form can be toxic when one drinks too much. "While some studies indicate that regular consumption of red wine may have health benefits, the reality is that many of us drink too much alcohol, which over time can adversely affect liver and brain function, as well as blood sugar and weight," Heller said. Will keep looking ....

Lucy2610 · 29/07/2015 10:04

On Wiki page: As of 2014, there is limited evidence of health effects in humans. talking about resveratrol. Any evidence propping up the reasons to drink are fast being dismantled or challenged it would seem, such as this: The cardioprotective effects of resveratrol also are theorized to be a form of preconditioning—the best method of cardioprotection, rather than direct therapy.[121] Study into the cardioprotective effects of resveratrol is based on the research of Dipak K. Das. However, he has been found guilty of scientific fraud, and many of his publications related to resveratrol have been retracted Grin

TeapotDictator · 29/07/2015 10:09

Atta girl Grin You had me googling there too. I can't find any images showing that set of graphs he put up during his talk, which showed that of all the indicators of ill health, in only one - at a very low intake of alcohol, was there a momentary reduction in risk... do you remember the charts I mean? And from this he said, from the one slight blip in lowered risk at this very low intake level, the government extrapolated that low levels of alcohol were considered fine.

Lucy2610 · 29/07/2015 10:29

Ooh I'd need to re-watch his talk. You could always share a link to that Wink if you were feeling brave Grin You could post it again here for the newer people on the thread to see and then we can maybe screen grab the chart and save it for future use :)

TeapotDictator · 29/07/2015 10:59

Here we go:

TeapotDictator · 29/07/2015 11:22

Found it - @ 25'00" in to this clip:

Lucy2610 · 29/07/2015 11:25

Well done that woman! Star Grin

Lucy2610 · 29/07/2015 11:31

Ahh so it was to do with ischaemic heart disasese - the resveratrol argument - who's evidence has now been discredited as scientific fraud and the research retracted! ...... Angry

Lucy2610 · 29/07/2015 11:39

And the now defunct research was only valid for men - NOT women!! So yes he goes on to say 1/2 a unit which equals 43mls of 12% ABV wine a day. So basically a sip ..... which takes us back to, what's the f**king point? Hmm

TeapotDictator · 29/07/2015 12:03

It really is crazy. Although let's not undermine that article in the Daily Misery by a lets-me-justify-my-own-wine-habit journo which says that up to a bottle of wine a day can be consumed without any ill effect. Angry

Sigma33 · 29/07/2015 12:29

Hi everyone - just popping in to say hello. Have managed the occasional AF day, but also some binges... struggling with boredom is the worst for me, as I'm unemployed. But still trying.

PinkPopPony · 29/07/2015 17:09

Threads moving fast !
Gosh the health benefits are vastly overemphasised then ?

Teapot I just cant do the one day at a time thing, too much time and head space taken up daily and so many times Ive gone back to just have a glass and end up on the slippery slope of "its sunny, raining, Ive had a good day etc and BAM Im right back where I started.

This feels different ,a bit like eating healthily for life rather than going on a diet. Thats the only way I can explain it.

TeapotDictator · 29/07/2015 19:09

Crikey yes PinkPop... no-one is suggesting with 'one day at a time' that you can go back and have the odd glass...! Sounds like you've had a shift in your mindset and that's the crucial bit I'd say. :) When I stopped I did the Allen Carr seminar thingie and it was all about dispelling the illusions around alcohol (relaxes you, de-stresses you, etc) so for me it doesn't really hold any appeal - the trouble is that most other people believe the opposite and it can be annoying knowing that you're out of kilter with the rest of society.

PinkPopPony · 29/07/2015 19:21

I couldn't agree more Teapot but that's what always happened.
I would get to 3 days/1 week/2 weeks and then somehow I would convince myself that one was ok,I was in control etc < deluded>

You are right -I think this time I realised that it doesn't distress and relax me, it makes me feel so ill.
A massive shift in my thinking Smile

PinkPopPony · 29/07/2015 19:23

It does distress me Blush
It doesn't de-stress me !

fabuLou · 30/07/2015 13:54

Hey everyone. sigma I have not gone dry as yet and may not totally. I'm still very early on but enjoying this thread.

Im actually going on holiday tomorrow but will revist this when we return.

I had a bottle of wine last night, woke up feeling hungover, now tired, defintley thinking more about the negatives, ate loads of crap, not at my best today, spent £8 to feel like this. Hmm

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 30/07/2015 13:58

Hello everyone, not been hiding, just busy again Smile I must say I do kind of feel like a bit of a fraud being here, as at the moment I don't intend to stop forever...

oops, just fead Fabulous' post! Blush that's sort of my thinking...

CheesyNachos · 30/07/2015 15:36

Hi all,

Hope everyone is fine.

Fab where are you going on holiday? i am most envious.... :)

I am having a testing few days. DH away for work again, and DS is testing some boundaries. I am feeling a bit tired, but treated myself to some petunias today and have been filling in my borders. That feels good.

PinkPopPony · 31/07/2015 21:24

Hope you made it through fab

Hope all are ok tonight.
Its been a long hard week but its the weekend Smile

LastGleaming · 01/08/2015 21:12

Hello again all.

Just reading through.. congrats Teapot. A year is absolutely brilliant! Did you do anything nice to mark the occasion?

I also used that line myself last week 'more authentic to myself' :) I feel like I'm slowly becoming the person I should have been and I want to be.

Good weekend here. Smashed my 5k personal best (I know that's not interesting to anyone but myself Grin), went to pride parade and tomorrow a day out with a friend and their lo. Looking forward to a good chat, a lot of stuff going through my head at present. Then my bro comes home for a surprise visit which I'm super chuffed about. We used to be pretty close but since he moved away we hardly see him from one year to the next. Will be nice to have all siblings together for a few days.

Fab pickpop, it really sounds like it's clicked into place for you.

Hope you got through Calais ok fabuLou and enjoy your holiday.

SouthWestmom · 01/08/2015 21:14

Hi all, I may just poke my nose round the door every so often? I used to drink 1.5 glasses of wine a night and in October pretty much stopped after a horrendous drunken night out. Since then I sometimes have a drink at the weekend (never wine) but I'm leaning towards actively being teetotal??

CheesyNachos · 02/08/2015 08:28

Hi everyone, hi Noeuf, welcome!

all okay here. Went to a BBQ last night and really really struggled. Feeling a bit grumpy, restless and fed up today. But am heading off to a fun day out at a farmers market and agricultural show which I am looking forward to.
