Shouted after me as i walked into a changing room cubicle that "Those clothes had BETTER come out on the clothes hanger" and then kissed her teeth.

Was I unreasonable to leave my clothes on the floor then swan out like a badass and simply saying "ciao".

I know it's sad and petty but I really enjoyed my coffee shortly after.

"People end up ignorant of things because they have chosen to put themselves in a position where there experiences are not broadened."

What utter tosh. I live where my job is, where my elderly mother is, where my friends are. If the local population does not not include people for whom teeth sucking is a cultural thing then how on earth I am supposed to be aware of this? Am I supposed to move somewhere else where this is common to enhance my life?

My four grandparents came from three different European countries. I would never suggest that someone who is not aware of different traditions from those countries is ignorant. We all have different experiences in life. Some people have more opportunities to broaden their knowledge of different cultures because where they live or work has a mix of people from different places. But if you live in an area where there is not a large Afro Caribbean community (for example) why would you be aware of their traditions rather than (for example) Italian traditions?

I have never heard of or encountered teeth sucking. What might be commonplace in London, or indeed in England generally is not necessarily the case in Scotland. It does not make me ignorant or unwilling to broaden my experiences.

Oh Tiny you are much more tolerant than me. I would not have let it lie until she'd been slung out on her arse with her P45 in her hand.

Tinytillytot · 20/09/2014 11:17

Dontdrinkandfacebook - you big meanie Grin it's my local top shop, there's nothing stopping me going back and trying on the clothes, ALL OF THE CLOTHES! Maybe hanging skirts on trouser hangers, size 10s on size 14s! I could go wild in the aisles (name that TV show) and start "unpairing" shoes. Although I do find topshop a terribly depressing experience sometimes as my croptop wearing days are soooooo far behind me.

What the fuck am I reading?!

I must be a racist because I've never heard of teeth kissing.

KatieKaye · 20/09/2014 19:41

No, you are just ignorant and unwilling to broaden your experiences, walter. Allegedly. Move down south immediately.

Alternatively you might just associate with people who are too polite to do this. It seems to be roughly equivalent to giving someone the V sign. Neither one is a gesture that should be done in public.

CalamitouslyWrong · 20/09/2014 19:46

Or you might just have different experiences and not be under the impression that the cultural references you happen to be familiar with are the only ones that matter.

To be fair, that position sums up the vast majority of people on this thread. It's just one weird poster who seems to be under the illusion that everyone else's experiences are 'narrower' than hers rather than just different.

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 20/09/2014 19:59

ethelb, what ridiculous comments! I've lived in Manchester and London for about 15 years, been to several Caribbean countries and I didn't know about teeth kissing. Nothing to do with " restricting my social experiences" or whatever BS.

carlywurly · 20/09/2014 20:09

Prior to reading this thread I had never heard of teeth kissing, despite having lived all over the uk and travelled all over the world, including the Caribbean.
Some things just escape you. It's one of those things.

Now I do understand it, Op, I think your reaction to what happened was perfect. Smile

coolaschmoola · 20/09/2014 20:12

Ok, so I wanted to check if I knew what kissing your teeth meant so I went on YouTube and inadvertently found people with NO teeth kissing! Oh my days.... Couple with no teeth kissing:

Waltermittythesequel · 20/09/2014 20:42

Feeling inadequate as the only thumb kissing I know is after crossing myself!

I obviously lead a very sheltered life...

LadyWithLapdog · 20/09/2014 22:14

Not thumb kissing, teeth kissing. One is holy, the other... less so.

KatieKaye · 20/09/2014 22:20

AndHarry said thumb kissing.
Confused!

AndHarry · 20/09/2014 22:25

I meant thumb biting Blush

Adarajames · 20/09/2014 22:49

I wish I lived somewhere with no teeth kissing, drives me crazy!! Gggrrrrrr! Angry
