Shouted after me as i walked into a changing room cubicle that "Those clothes had BETTER come out on the clothes hanger" and then kissed her teeth.

Was I unreasonable to leave my clothes on the floor then swan out like a badass and simply saying "ciao".

I know it's sad and petty but I really enjoyed my coffee shortly after.

I was at school 30 years ago (old gimmer) and (mostly) black kids used to kiss their teeth at people as a sign of disapproval/disrespect.

After a couple of years, it seemed everyone was doing it no matter what their colour.

I fucking hate it though. It winds me right up for some reason.

Hissy · 19/09/2014 18:39

only on Mumsnet..

Puzzledandpissedoff · 19/09/2014 18:39

Gosh people on here are very white aren't they!

I honestly can't believe you posted that ...

Mintyy · 19/09/2014 18:39

No not being sarcastic. Don't take it personally! Its just demographics isn't it? or something like that! No need to be so touchy.

picnicbasketcase · 19/09/2014 18:42

I knew what it sounded like, but not what it's supposed to mean IYSWIM.

Jefferson · 19/09/2014 18:43

I don't really get why people are being so aggressive to OP. It was obviously meant to be light hearted even if leaving clothes on floor is a bit rubbish OP.
And those that don't know who teeth kissing is...er...just look it up or ask nicely. What's the big deal?
Even worse are those trying to suggest racism. Get a grip

treaclesoda · 19/09/2014 18:43

there were no black kids at my school, nor are there any at my own dc's school. When you don't ever come across other cultural backgrounds in your day to day life, it's just not on your radar to be aware of these things. And I suppose if it's originally a Caribbean thing, it's not going to cross to other kids because there is no one to copy.

ethelb · 19/09/2014 18:43

Only on mumsnet

^^

Would people not know what teeth sucking is.

owlbegoing · 19/09/2014 18:44

So you left your clothes on the cubicle floor then strolled out of the shop wearing theirs?
That's theft isn't it? Hmm

treaclesoda · 19/09/2014 18:44

I wasn't being touchy, I was just trying to explain why I didn't Google Smile

I did think the start of your post was sarcastic, but that was just me misjudging Grin

alemci · 19/09/2014 18:44

perhaps you could have made a comment like I would have thought that was your job but I will try

tbh I would always do my best to put things back and when I was 18 I worked in Laura Ashley on the changing room - soul destroying but you have to be polite. sucking teeth is not on. very rude.

Jefferson · 19/09/2014 18:45

And I guess it is a surprise to those of us living in big cities as teeth kissing has been around since forever. It's no longer a 'black' thing either. The asian kids at my school do it all the time until I glare at them

sugarquill · 19/09/2014 18:45

It's the same as sucking the air from between your teeth, isn't it?

In which case, it's been in "white" literature for donkey's.

treaclesoda · 19/09/2014 18:45

but ethel how would I know what it is when I've never seen it or heard of it? Confused

WorraLiberty · 19/09/2014 18:45

owl, she left the shop's clothes on the floor

LineRunner · 19/09/2014 18:47

None of it sounds polite or normal for a clothes shop.

ethelb · 19/09/2014 18:48

I'm not suggesting it is racist to not know what teeth sucking is. I'm suggesting it suggests your experience is INCREDIBLY narrow.

It is however arrogant to ask for it to just be fucking called tutting.

DontDrinkAndFacebook · 19/09/2014 18:48

To be honest I'd be inclined to leave them on the floor too if an assistant gave me that kind of attitude. Really disgusting.

hmc · 19/09/2014 18:48

Hmm at some of the posts on this thread.

Perfect riposte OP - I applaud you.

LineRunner · 19/09/2014 18:49

Sorry.

Jefferson · 19/09/2014 18:49

I agree with ethelb

JeanneDeMontbaston · 19/09/2014 18:50

Oh, come on, she misunderstood.

She thought it was the OP's own coinage, as the OP immediately posted that she'd meant tutting.

It's not unreasonable to make that assumption, though I guess the swearing makes it sound aggressive.

It's a strange thread, this.

LineRunner · 19/09/2014 18:51

I swear too much.

I had a day involving an unpleasant episode I'd rather not go into.

I apologise.

bialystockandbloom · 19/09/2014 18:51

Jeez, why does it matter where teeth kissing comes from? It's not at all relevant to the point of the OP - which was that the shop assistant was extraordinarily and unnecessarily rude to a customer.

OP YANBU (if you'd posted in AIBU of course). As it's in Relationships can I say LTB?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 19/09/2014 18:52

I'm not suggesting it is racist to not know what teeth sucking is. I'm suggesting it suggests your experience is INCREDIBLY narrow

And "very white" apparently ... Hmm
