A teenage shop assistant today...

Tinytillytot · 19/09/2014 17:51

Shouted after me as i walked into a changing room cubicle that "Those clothes had BETTER come out on the clothes hanger" and then kissed her teeth.

Was I unreasonable to leave my clothes on the floor then swan out like a badass and simply saying "ciao".

I know it's sad and petty but I really enjoyed my coffee shortly after.

Don't buy one, what ever you do. It is even worse if you try to iron them.

TSSDNCOP · 19/09/2014 20:23

If the assistant was actually that rude, and frankly I'm surprised they thought they'd get away with it even in Top Shop, I would have handed the pile of clothes directly to her and walked out via the Manager.

Littlebluebutterflies · 19/09/2014 20:23

TBH IonaMumsnet there was far more mileage in the teeth kidding debate than in the original topic which was basically 'two rude strangers interact'. Grin

And besides it's educational - I bet I'll see teeth kidding all over the place now I know about it. I'll be able to be all offended and come on mumsnet to right threads about it. In Relationships, in honour of the OP

Littlebluebutterflies · 19/09/2014 20:24

^^ kissing not kidding, apparently my iPhone doesn't approve of kissing!

madmomma · 19/09/2014 20:26

What a ridiculous thread this has turned into!
I have never heard of, or witnessed teeth kissing either, despite working in a multi-cultural secondary school and being married to an asian. Those youtube examples didn't ring any bells.

Funny, funny thread.

DontDrinkAndFacebook · 19/09/2014 20:26

Your iphone has clearly has only a very narrow knowledge base and cultural understanding. The smug white middle-class bastard.

Littlebluebutterflies · 19/09/2014 20:28

My iPhone is definitely middle class but is in fact black.

Littlebluebutterflies · 19/09/2014 20:28

It is quite smug though. And regularly turns my ofs to ifs

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 19/09/2014 21:11

Haha yanbu OP you met deeply disrespectful behaviour with deeply disrespectful behaviour. Normally I'm very supportive of shop workers (having been several) but there are limits!

I liked a PP suggestion of putting things back on the hanger inside out and on the wrong size.

It's not racist to not know about teeth-kissing. I grew up in north essex, then lived in rural wales and extremely rural NW ireland and didn't really encounter Caribbean culture until I moved to SE london. I know what teeth-kissing is now, but I didn't for all those years because I never came across it. I just wish I could do it. I try now and again but just sound like I'm blowing kisses.

jadey101 · 19/09/2014 21:16

met deeply disrespectful behaviour with deeply disrespectful behaviour

So your mantra is 'fight fire with fire?' An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. Being rude to rude people will not change their behaviour. It also doesn't justify your rudeness.

hmc · 19/09/2014 21:26

Actually being rude to rude people often works, when they are forced to acknowledge theft not everyone will take their shit

hmc · 19/09/2014 21:28

'That' not 'theft' Confused

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 19/09/2014 21:32

In some cases yes, fight fire with fire.

Shouted after me as i walked into a changing room cubicle that "Those clothes had BETTER come out on the clothes hanger" and then kissed her teeth.

I would interpret that as 'Hey everybody in this changing room, look at that woman there, she looks looks like a shoplifter to me' - how would you react?

Castlemilk · 19/09/2014 21:36

I would have reacted by saying loundly and sternly - 'BE SILENT. YES YOU GIRL - SILENCE! GET BACK TO YOUR NUMBERED TAGS AND WATCH YOUR POTTY MOUTH. OR YOU WILL END UP WITH A BUCKET IN YOUR TROUSERS!!'

SweetErmengarde · 19/09/2014 21:37

I worked in retail all through uni and would have been fired on the spot for speaking to a customer like that!

YANBU. The only thing I'd have done differently is, as PPs have suggested, to speak to the manager.

Sparklingbrook · 19/09/2014 21:37

Tell me again why this is in 'Relationships'? Confused

jadey101 · 19/09/2014 21:46

hmc
So whoever is the most confident in being rude wins basically? Thats like saying if someone punches you, punch them back harder and it will make them realise that not everyone will take their shit. It's not exactly the most appropriate or adult way of dealing with things is it?

Plenty
It's hard to say how I would react as the OP gave us no insight to the events running up to the comment. However if the shop assistant was truly so disrespectful I would hope I would just place my clothes on the back on the rack and make a complaint to the store manager in a civilized manner.

Not throw them on the floor.

Mintyy · 19/09/2014 21:48

Sparklingbrook

Op apologised for accidentally posting in Relationships - twice.

SweetErmengarde · 19/09/2014 21:49

Castlemilk, you are awesome.

PotatoPolly · 19/09/2014 21:52

Bloody brilliant OP! silent victories are always that little bit sweeter Smile good for you!

IonaMumsnet · 19/09/2014 21:53

We're going to move this to AIBU in just a moment.

Sparklingbrook · 19/09/2014 21:54

Oh right Mintyy.

Sparklingbrook · 19/09/2014 21:55

If it's going in AIBU I have that hidden. it's probably for the best. Grin

TheSultanofPing · 19/09/2014 21:55

Grin @ castlemilk

hmc · 19/09/2014 21:55

It has invariably worked for me jadey - not sure why the pejorative judgements about how 'adult' or otherwise this approach may be. Does it not occur to you that some of us are equally sceptical about mealy mouthed approaches advocating mincing to the manager and similar
