Calling all those with an eternity ring.....

What is the protocol here - did you ask for one? Were you presented with one when you least expected it? I am too embarrassed to raise the issue and we've been together a long time (25 years) but if I don't do anything then by default nothing will happen...I realise that there are more important issues out there, but I'm just curious and it's easier to ask you lot than any RL friends!

I asked! 40th birthday present. If I hadn't ask then I'd've had to buy my own!!

Crikeyblimey · 18/12/2013 21:23

I just said I fancied one.

Many months later when dh got his bonus, we were in town and he suggested a trip to the jewellers where we bought our wedding rings. Tried on on, liked it, bought it.

Just mention you want one. People aren't psychic! :)

spudmasher · 18/12/2013 21:24

Was expecting one after birth of DD2 which coincided with 10th anniversary......nowt.
Just had 20th anniversary..........nowt.
I might have to ask.

onetiredmummy · 18/12/2013 21:24

I think that traditionally an eternity ring is presented for the birth of a first child. But I didn't get one.

After 25 years I think you need to ask :)

Tinkerisdead · 18/12/2013 21:27

I dropped large hints saying you get them fir a first baby/anniversary luckily my first baby came four weeks before my first anniversary so he leapt on the idea of an easy present.

FracturedViewOfLife · 18/12/2013 21:27

I asked for one when we were on holiday in Turkey as they had some that went with my other rings.

Bowlersarm · 18/12/2013 21:28

I asked after quite a few years. DH was very happy to oblige. (Mine has five diamonds representing each of us Xmas Smile )

MerryFuckingChristmas · 18/12/2013 21:29

Traditionally, an eternity ring is presented for birth of first male child Hmm

Anyway, I have one, despite the dubious sexist premise. I like diamond rings, so shoot me ....

Mabelandrose · 18/12/2013 21:29

You always have to ask/hint for these sorts if things! Men don't even know the exist.

BIWI · 18/12/2013 21:30

DH bought mine for my 40th. It does have to be said that there was a lot of fairly overt hinting going on. So much hinting that it was probably more of a definite suggestion!

ChristmasJumperWearer · 18/12/2013 21:31

I asked. It was when DC1 was born. I gave DH a very very expensive watch in return, so he was happy too.

bluestar2 · 18/12/2013 21:32

I hinted abt it being traditional for birth of first child but it didn't arrive.

However 2 years later for a surprise christmas present I got it - he said he had wanted to save for it and at time ds1 was born we couldn't afford that extravagance. So I would def say you need to hint at the very least

emsyj · 18/12/2013 21:33

DH bought me an antique platinum and diamond eternity ring for my birthday the first year we were together Shock. It was (is) beautiful.

However, I have been hinting, begging and nagging for a diamond tennis bracelet for over ten years now and got nowhere! Grin

I would just mention that you would like one and maybe email him a few links to ones you like (assuming he does email). I particularly wanted a specific necklace last year so I just said to DH how much I liked it and how lovely it was and how it would 'go' with everything etc then I emailed him a link to the relevant page and I got it for Christmas.

AnAdventureInCakeAndWine · 18/12/2013 21:38

I got one (sort of; it's not a traditional "eternity" design) for tenth wedding anniversary. I hadn't been expecting it and definitely hadn't hinted.

doasyouwouldbedoneby · 18/12/2013 21:45

Totally unexpected 10th Anniversary present -a diamond and emerald ring--had never even thought about having one

Pilgit · 18/12/2013 21:48

I thought it was traditional with birth of first child. I have two DD's now and not seen anything. But we have other things that need the money being spent on it - house, garden, mortgage. Dull, but there we are (he also says he would feel funny about it as it would essentially be bought with money I had earned.... still a bit boo though) so more silly socks and joke books for me for Christmas then....

pausingforbreath · 18/12/2013 21:51

For my 1st wedding anniversary- I didn't hint.
A good while ago......

bouncyagain · 18/12/2013 21:54

Only person I know who has had one was divorced within a year.

SauvignonBlanche · 18/12/2013 21:56

Surprise 10th wedding anniversary present for me.

MerryFuckingChristmas · 18/12/2013 21:58

My Eternity Ring is 13 yo now and stronger than ever ... Xmas Grin

IsItMeOr · 18/12/2013 22:04

I heavily hinted and got one around our 10th anniversary.

I also got a diamond pendant for 40th birthday/15th anniversary, after heavy hinting.

I like sparkly stuff :)

LRDtheFeministDragon · 18/12/2013 22:04

There's no protocol or tradition whatsoever - if you like one, why not?!

I think they are really pretty. I have one in memory of my grandpa, which I bought from some money he left me.

I wouldn't hint because IMO unless your DH is extremely good at this stuff, he might not get you something you loved and for that amount of money, you'll want to love it.

ScrambledSmegs · 18/12/2013 22:06

Um. Mine is my wedding ring. We just thought it looked nice with the engagement ring.

Hasn't bought me a single piece of jewellery since, mind Grin Fair enough, I can buy my own!

AmberDextrous · 18/12/2013 22:06

2nd wedding anniversary present Smile

Mrswellyboot · 18/12/2013 22:08

I asked dh while I was pregnant as he didn't even know they existed. Then we went into a jewellers together after the first scan. Dh is thoughtful with presents but wouldn't have thought of one.
