His 'holidays' in bloody Thailand

Name change.

I'm single. I've been involved in an on/off fairly casual thing with this guy for 3 years. He goes to the Far East about 4 times a year. Turns out that he goes to Bangkok and somewhere else in Thailand...I've only just found this out, he's never mentioned Thailand usually says he's going to Malaysia and/or Singapore but doesn't talk about his trip when he gets back home.

Can there be any innocent reason why a single man in his mid 40's goes to Bangkok 4 times a year ? On his own? And if it's all innocent (yea yea) why not just tell me the truth about where he goes?

I know I need to get checked for STI's. I am going to die of embarassment a woman of my age going in there, are these clinics full of 16 year olds?

But my main question here is, would anyone else feel like I do? I feel like I've lost all respect for him as a man. He's a horrible repulsive creature doing this. I feel dirty myself. I feel as if he must hate women.

Oh I've just temembered the other thing.

Smacking is fine.

  1. Choccy face = fine
  2. Smacking = fine
  3. Sex tourism = fine

Laz is a 50s trope.

Perhaps he has been kept in a cupboard.

larrygrylls · 06/07/2012 09:55

Shirley,

The term is like "hard working families" which politicians love. Maybe it once meant something but now it is just longhand for saying families.

You have no idea how I think. I contribute money to real charities helping real people in countries like Thailand. I find prostitution of any ilk a bit seedy and have never used a prostitute, nor would I. However, I don't think it is evil or necessarily exploitative (as long as the prostitutes are adults).

I was brought up to believe no means no and embrace the law on rape and feel the conviction rate should be upped if it is safe to do so. I do disagree with certain ideas that seem prevalent on these pages and would (luckily) hold no water in a court of law. I do think it is offensive when people say that you should bring your sons up "not to rape" as if parents need to be told to bring up non criminal children. We all do our best to bring up respectful thinking people, of either sex.

And, if you met me in real life, you may like me, you may not. And vice versa. This forum has very little to do with real life and tends to be very polarising.

OP - all the best. I hope the wait isn't too agonising for you. Thanks

glastocat · 06/07/2012 10:03

Yes good luck OP, you had a lucky escape. I mean, look at the type of excuse for a man you could have ended up with!

A small cultural festival of song and poetry is ok though, Helen, yes?

ShirleyKnot · 06/07/2012 10:29

I think I'm going to take my own advice and instead of responding to stuff I find ridiculous I am going to link arms with BOF and have a sing song.

Come on Helen, let us be as one. Grin

HelenMumsnet · 06/07/2012 11:07

@LeB0F

A small cultural festival of song and poetry is ok though, Helen, yes?

Absolutely. Provided it is personal-attack-free.

I'm not one of AF's gang but I agree with everything she's written here.

And there are far more than 10 or 12 of us.

izzyizin · 06/07/2012 11:30

A cultural sing song? That reminds of a night I spent at a taverna in the south of Crete many some years ago.

A table on the small harbour front beside the waters of the Libyan sea, the full moon rising over the mountain, bouzouki music playing; 'twas truly a night for romance.

A particularly haunting song caught my attention. Imagining that it was tale of love suited to the scene, I asked my host for a translation. He told me that the song dated back to the time the Colonels (Army) overthrew the Greek monarchy in Athens.

One verse of the translation stayed in my memory. It described how, should the colonels be foolish enough to come to Crete, their genitalia would be cut off, chopped up, boiled in oil, and fed to them.

Shall we sing that one? Grin

MmeLindor. · 06/07/2012 11:43

I'm one of 'AF's Gang', in that I support her in this case.

Sometimes I don't agree with her, but I still admire and respect her.

You sneer at those supporting her as being part of a clique in order to reduce our power, to belittle us.

We are all independent thinkers, women who don't let anyone think for us.

Anyone who defends prostitution by saying that it's better than the alternative is massively missing the point. Rather than accepting the status quo, we should be helping to give them an alternative.

13 year olds should be in school. Not on the streets.

And we can start by turning our backs on the disgusting pigs who holiday there in order to abuse these women.

MmeLindor. · 06/07/2012 11:43

Oh, and to the OP - sorry that your thread is being hijacked by this, but well done for kicking that weasel out of your life.

babyheaves · 06/07/2012 11:45

I'm not in AFs gang. I refuse to be in anyone's gang where their initials are the same as Auntie Flo.

Hullygully · 06/07/2012 11:50

D'YOU WANNA BE IN MY GANG, MY GANG, MY GANG?
