Dh has a consultation coming up soon, at first he was really happy going throught with it but somehow I feel he is getting cold feet. I dont want him to feel bullied into having it done so that is why I'm asking you to tell us about your experience !

3 DAYS IN BED?????
I've never met a woman who got that after a c-section.

Snorbs · 28/09/2010 09:25

When I had mine done I ended up with a haematoma as one of the wounds bled for a long time. The swelling was, um, extensive.

I took a day or two off work and took things fairly easy for a week. It was a good couple of months before sex was possible. In all it took the best part of a year for the aches and twinges to fully recede.

I understand that most vasectomies done these days use keyhole surgery rather than the "slice it open and rummage around" approach that I had. Keyhole surgery is supposed to produce fewer complications than other techniques.

But, despite all this oh-so-witty "Aren't men big babies" stuff, post-vasectomy complications can occur and they can be difficult to live with. I don't regret having had it done but it is not always a procedure that is quick and easy to recover from.

snorbs, I bet you didn't have to wheel yours round in a barrow did ya ?

I'm Shock at some of these stories! Dh had a tiny wound, about 1cm and that was it. Tight pants for a week or so - no problems.

Best thing about life after the snip if the lack of hormonal contraceptive for me has done wonders for my libido. dh wishes he'd done it sooner Grin

ProfYaffle · 28/09/2010 09:30

Dh's op was keyhole btw

AnyFucker · 28/09/2010 09:39

yes, prof

my DH is very happy he had it done too Wink

1234ThumbWar · 28/09/2010 09:46

I dropped dh off at the clinic to have it done and hours later was very worried that he hadn't called asking for a lift back. When I called him he was in the pub around the corner from home reading the paper - so not exactly traumatic.

Sex life has never been so good, lovely not to worry about getting pg.

ProfYaffle · 28/09/2010 09:50

Aren't we a happy bunch? Grin

expatinscotland · 28/09/2010 09:53

FAB for us! :)

But you must never, ever ever want to procreate again.

It is meant to be permanent.

Dh was out in record time and had zero problems.

He took ibuprofen the first day and that was it.

He had minimal swelling and healed up no bother.

It's been grand!

NormaStanleyFletcher · 28/09/2010 09:59

Just to echo what Snorbs said, we were very happy with DHs vasectomy, but a few weeks later he developed epididimitis, which was no fun for either of us.

Also - there is a 10 percent chance of cronic pain and unfortunately it seems that my DH has fallen in to that 10%. The pain isn't constantly bad, but sometimes is debilitating. He has tiny cists, for which they can do nothing, apart from advise him to take painkillers Sad

So as well as saying that they should be big boys, do consider the risks

(We did consider the risks, but thought it worth it as we had beaten every contraceptive we had tried, including the merina coil)

1234ThumbWar · 28/09/2010 10:00

Grin - the only annoying thing is having to wait for the all clear.

expatinscotland · 28/09/2010 10:05

Same here, Yaffle!

I've personally known quite a few men who had vasectomies - it's very common in the US where you have to pay for all your kids and often, for birth control, too.

And never heard of any real horror stories till I came on here.

littlewish · 28/09/2010 10:27

My husband had a vasectomy. 4 years later I fell pregnant, he was a "late failure" unfortunately I lost our surprise baby at 20 weeks back in July 2010. It was and still is the sadest thing to happen to us. I read somewhere he should get tested every year.

Malificence · 28/09/2010 10:47

The risk of re-canalisation is less than 1 in 2000, the consultant who did DH said he'd never had a failure in 15 years, it wholly depends on the method used as to the risk - removing a section of vas deferens, then burying both ends in the scrotal ( love that word) flesh is thought to be the most effective method, that doesn't happen with the new-fangled no-scalpel technique, our guy was old school.
Just be wary when they say 20 ejaculations to clear - bollocks it's actually statistically likely to be nearer to 50, and if the man is 40+ then it takes even longer because the muscular contractions of ejaculation aren't as strong as a younger man Wink. It took DH 7 months and an awful lot of sex to get clear, not that I was complaing you understand Grin but that did mean I had to keep my coil in for much longer than planned, we switched to condoms for the last couple of weeks and that was quite the novelty.

larrygrylls · 28/09/2010 10:53

Anyfucker,

IT is surgery! Minor surgery but you cannot deny it is surgery.

Having said that, my wife is expecting in Nov with our second. We are going to wait two years just in case but then I am happy to go for the snip (well maybe happy is a slightly strong word :)

dotty2 · 28/09/2010 11:12

Littlewish - I'm so sorry for your loss. That must have been very sad and difficult.

goodmanners · 28/09/2010 11:40

Oh i am so jealous, dh was booked in and he was v worried abotu the surgery , he went though and in he went to emerge 30 mins later unscathed. his pulse was racing to much and his balls went into retreat. No more talk of it in our house which i must say utterly pisses me off but what can i do! They offered him valium and to come back but he was a nervous wreck. Did not relish the idea of tellig mil he had died having the snip .

SexyDomesticatedDad · 28/09/2010 11:46

Quick and simple with key hole - saw the long bit the surgeon cut out. No problems on recovery and once you getthe all clear it's all systems go.

larrygrylls · 28/09/2010 11:53

I have to say I cannot see what all the fuss is about either, but I guess it is a couple of years away for me. As long as it is under local I have no problems. Not been put to sleep since I was about 7 and hated it then, so my phobia would be of the general anaesthetic!

My Dad had one and he always seemed pretty happy about it, maybe that is why.

expatinscotland · 28/09/2010 11:57

My dad and FIL both had one when it was more invasive - back in the late 70s - but are pleased with the results.

BIL and many mates had it the newer way, as did DH, no problems.

I can't use the Mirena coil or any progesten-only contraception for the side effects, don't agree with how the copper coil works, can't use combined pill due to health issues and we had two pregnancies whilst using other forms of contraception.

The female sterilisation procedure was far more invasive - GA, overnight stay in hospital due to distance, abdomen painfully bloated with gas, risk of ectopic pregnancy, etc.

This just made more sense.

expatinscotland · 28/09/2010 11:59

DH's mate drove him over - the hospital was some distance away.

His appointment was a little after 9.

By 1PM they were home and they'd stopped at Pizza Hut for a buffet lunch on the way back!

Seeline · 28/09/2010 12:06

My DH was prescribed Tamazapam the night before and teh morning of the op. He was so out of it I don't think he knew what was going on Grin He slept (in his tight pants that the nurse insisted on) for about 24 hours afterwards.

BalloonSlayer · 28/09/2010 12:13

3 Days in BED ????? !!!!

In your bloody dreams!

I didn't get that after my c-sections!

Bloody hell

DH did use a pack of frozen peas on the affected area, as advised, and said it helped. And yes I did throw them away afterwards, "Peas au Bollock" wasn't on my meal planner that week.

duchesse · 28/09/2010 12:15

BIL developed an abscess on his testicle after his op in a Marie Stopes clinic, that required the tender ministrations of the district nurse for ten days. it was 17 years ago so maybe techniques have moved on a bit since then...
