Hello, welcome to thread number six!! Smile

I'm Mouse and, thanks to these threads, I quit the booze on August 2nd 2010.

This truly is a fantastic source of support for anyone who wants it! Full of real, honest, everyday people who are all at different stages of quitting the booze, cutting down or being long term sober.

There are no judgmental 'know-it-alls' here, whatever your circumstances, you will be supported all the way.

Come and meet the rest of The Brave Babes........

And, as before, here are the previous five threads for those who would like to see how this all began.

JWN's original thread (the reason we are all here)

Hmm, I am not sure that 'working hard' is the correct description! Maybe trying hard not to be sick on my keyboard comes closer... Trying hard to keep my alky smell to myself would also fit!

MsGee · 31/08/2010 15:20

Oh no, not long till home time though Smile

Has the benefit of lunch worn off?

Wasindie, where I live is stuffed full of churches, so I can't see any AA meeting being god-less. I think most of them are at churches.
Anyway, why would I need an AA meeting, I can control this myself ... oh, hang on Grin

RedMoomin · 31/08/2010 15:29

The benefit of lunch has definitely worn off now! But I am still really, really hungry! I am fancying fish and chips for my dinner... I will have to see whether I have enough cash on me for that indulgence! How are you doing wasindie?

MIFLAW · 31/08/2010 15:35

Glad it's helped some people.

I think it's sensible to remember that AA developed in a more God-fearing era (1935) in a more God-fearing country (America) and out of an explicitly religious group with similar aims (the Oxford Group) - and that we are trying to use it in a country that, if it's anything, is Christian.

So you shouldn't be surprised in meetings if, for many people, "God" really does mean "God" and a Christian God at that.

You just need to remember that the literature explicitly says that this is not necessary and that the history of AA worldwide is already littered with long-term sober members who, at least in the strictly religious sense, did (and do) not "believe in God".

Loved your 12 steps Miflaw:) have printed them out!! Now just need to work my way through them:)

MIFLAW · 31/08/2010 15:49

"Loved your 12 steps Miflaw have printed them out!!"

At last - I am a published author!

desiretochange · 31/08/2010 15:53

And where has my smiley face gone Miflaw??

RedMoomin · 31/08/2010 15:54

Fame at last MIFLAW!

Oh God roll on 5pm. I am dying here! I may have to see if I can get out of here early as I am not sure I can face it for another hour. What a baby I am!!

What's everyone up to this evening? I will NOT be drinking. That's my number one priority for today and tomorrow and probably for the rest of my life...

RedMoomin · 31/08/2010 15:55

Hello desire!

How are you this afternoon? (Apart from inflating MIFLAW's ego of course Smile)

desiretochange · 31/08/2010 15:56

Only an hour left Red, bad hangover?:(

RedMoomin · 31/08/2010 15:57

Pretty bad, yes. Actually physically I am OK-ish. It's the mental crap that's doing for me today!

desiretochange · 31/08/2010 16:00

Mental crap you are putting yourself through?

RedMoomin · 31/08/2010 16:03

Yes, the stuff that's going round my head is not helpful! But I am OK... Leaving work at 4.30pm, will make up the time tomorrow. I love my boss!

desiretochange · 31/08/2010 16:11

That's what happens me when I drink, I give myself such a hard time (sometimes deserved, sometimes completely over-exaggerated.

RedMoomin · 31/08/2010 16:13

I know what you mean desire, I really do! Am really counting down the minutes now!

RedMoomin · 31/08/2010 16:20

OK babes, almost home time - and thank fuck for that. (Apologies for the rather strong language.)

I hope that everyone enjoys a nice evening!

Thanks for all the kindness today x x

desiretochange · 31/08/2010 16:23

Have a lovely evening Red, get to bed as early as you can, tomorrow is another day..

MIFLAW · 31/08/2010 16:25

Mumsnet swallowed the smiley face.

This is one of the things I cannot change, which I am therefore bearing with serenity, rather than something I can change, which would require courage.

Thank heavens I know the difference!

desiretochange · 31/08/2010 16:28

"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can and wisdom to know the difference"

Is that part of AA Miflaw?

MsGee · 31/08/2010 16:35

desire, I think of that quote so often. In fact it was very useful when dealing with in laws.

of course, back when I was God (pre lunchtime) I could change it all...

:):) MsGee

MIFLAW · 31/08/2010 16:58

Desire

It's used by AA though I don't know where it comes from - it is known as "the serenity prayer" but also as "AA's adopted prayer" which suggests we nicked it somewhere.

The fourth line (which is almost never used but which, to me, is the most important, once you strip it of its overt religiousness) is

"Thy will, not mine, be done."
