Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd love to administer Bert's mucus medicine, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/5538836-the-archers-spoilers-thread-12-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

There's a fair amount of stuff going on at the moment but I don't feel inspired to say anything more about any of it for now. Over to you - I hope you all have more enthusiasm than I do!

Thank you @MorningCoffeePlease! I didn’t mean it literally, I meant what a silly thing to
do - but your reply made me think about the fact that while we, the listeners, know that Eddie is a corner-cutting chancer, Esme doesn’t know that. Judging by the argument over the fence post, she’s soon to find out.

It’s such poor behaviour by Eddie, when Esme has taken a bit of a risk, practically and socially, by employing George, and is being portrayed as a very straightforward and honest person.

If, as we were supposed to believe, Esme grew up in Ambridge, she would have known from the cradle that Eddie is a corner-cutting chancer and con-man who deservedly became a bankrupt who was evicted from his farm. Nobody who grew up in Ambridge can possibly have failed to know these facts. I expect she avoided Joe like the plague too; anyone who didn't have to associate with him would have done so.

Yes but she doesn’t seem to have known anyone. I agree that any sane person would avoid Joe and Eddie!

You can pronounce your own surname however you want.

In the family I married into the surname is from another language, now third generation of native English speakers to have it. Each generation says it slightly differently.

You can indeed, but Mahoney, a surname from another language, has a pronunciation derived from that language and the Anglo pronunciation is rooted in a refusal to respect its linguistic roots.

See also Costello (and Caitlin Moran).

If that's what people want to do no-one is going to stop them, but they'll get a bit of side-eye.

BeaLola · 25/08/2026 12:30

I’m catching up on episodes via Sounds and tbh whilst not a Harrison fan at all I’m surprised he had moved on so quickly - of course it had to be with the daughter of the woman now employing his soon to be ex wife …..
I’m just glad I wasn’t listening in real time as the “chat” between Harrison and Lily would have put me off my dinner.

so who have the annoying SW lined up for Fallon ?
Most likely - Chris
Mist unlikely - Martin Gibson

Every1ElseInKnowsley · 25/08/2026 12:31

@WitcheryDivine ,the footballer John Mahoney was 'John Ma-hone-y' but someone I know with the surname says it like 'Marnie' (non-rhotic).

The surname McMahon is 'Mac Marne' (non-rhotic). I've not heard it said otherwise.

Every1ElseInKnowsley · 25/08/2026 12:39

@DeanElderberry , how should Costello be said? The fashion designer was Paul COST-uh-lo.
I know someone called Donellan and they say it as DON-uh-lun.

Caitlin Moran is CAT-lyn Mor-RAN, isn't she?

EBearhug · 25/08/2026 12:46

I used to work with someone whose surname was O'Mahoney, and thst was pronounced oh-marnee.

Bleugh!

Conrad? Martyn? Ed?
Will is single.

@DeanElderberry , I was listening to Any Answers on Saturday, and Anita Anand was struggling with Builth Wells. The caller corrected her and said it also said it in Welsh (Llnfair-ym-Muallt 14.21 mins in),only the caller said it in a peculiar mangled way. Shock

Every1ElseInKnowsley · 25/08/2026 13:20

'and said it also' should read 'and also'.

Ugh! Harrison and Lily. His bed's not even cold FFS.
And they only kissed, why all the angst?

In Ireland, Costello is COST ello, not the American Cost ELL o (which the designer went over to, rather than explain every time)

In Ireland Caitlin is Cawchleen or Kathleen

Moran is More-an

Mahon (ex mac Mathuna) has two syllables just as Mahoney (ex Ó Mathghamhana) has three.

An English dictionary's listing of non-Irish pronunciations of Irish names is an excellent example of the Colonial process.

Every1ElseInKnowsley · 25/08/2026 15:01

@DeanElderberry , I'm not Irish so am prepared to be corrected. They were approximations of how I'd say them. I couldn't be bothered to work out the IPA, which again is probably only an approximation.

I think I do reasonably OK but only because I made an effort to learn enough to not get laughed at. I can go to the Baby names section and insist I am right on the grounds that I have been to Dublin and have a friend from Antrim. Grin

I grew up with the name Caitlin said as CAT-leen , Niamh as 'Nee-(u)v' etc. Not an Irish area but plenty of Irish heritage. Lots of Seans, Kierans, etc. Mo-RAN seemed wrong but I've only heard it said that way (on telly e.g. Mike Moran). I don't like Caitlin Moran and she's really Catherine anyway.

From whom? Irish names have been pronounced a multiplicity of ways (by their owners) all over the world for centuries.

DeanElderberry · 25/08/2026 15:55

From Irish people.

UhOhRatPoo · 25/08/2026 15:58

DeanElderberry · 25/08/2026 15:55

From Irish people.

Well that’s just ridiculous. Who has the right to judge how anyone says their own name?

I’m Scottish I have heard many a butchering of Scottish names by Americans and Australians, couldn’t care less.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 25/08/2026 16:14

DeanElderberry · 25/08/2026 15:55

From Irish people.

But so will some other Irish people get the side-eye, in that case, because not even all Irish people are agreed on pronunciation.

Maybe the answer is to try not to be judgemental about how other people chose to pronounce their own names?

DeanElderberry · 25/08/2026 16:22

That would make a nice change.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 25/08/2026 16:25

I know four women whose name is Eva. Each pronounces it differently. Their name, their business; I just try to get it right. But they each know of the other three, which helps if I blow it.

DeanElderberry · 25/08/2026 16:33

Yes, our regular coffee morning group has a Marie, a Marie and a Marie. All different.

SockPlant · 25/08/2026 17:27

i have an Irish surname, and a Scottish first name. And in each country i hear various pronunciations of both and either. So meh.

Had to catch up on 4 eps today. Lily/Harrison slurping made me barf.

I was told as a child to be suspicious of anyone with a surname which hyphenated a Scots name with an Irish one.

There are some strange prejudices around; as if a child could choose its own surname!

What’s the third pronunciation?

Hercisback · 25/08/2026 18:27

Can we avoid Rhuari gate please?

Alice and Rex 🤢. As for him "getting out of babysitting", he's not a parent and they've known each other 5 mins.

Khalil is a 17yo boy, he's definitely seen worse than those sheep on the internet. That storyline was unbelievable. It's easier to comment on the believable storylines nowadays.

Mahoney/Mahony is Ma-hun-ee in Ireland all right, but it’s also often said more like Mah-nee too, at least where I am. Particularly when it comes after an O’ or when it’s said quickly…people just drop a syllable.
I’ve never heard it pronounced Ma-HONE-ee in Ireland.

I think Khalil is 15 and about to go into year 11. But your point still stands. However, as others have said, it's very understandable that his parents are overprotective of him after his years of leukaemia treatment.
