Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you think 19 is an ideal age to have a baby with a convict, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Emma spoke sense to George and Amber tonight. Goodness only knows where this storyline is going. I can't see George being Father of the Year. Oh dear.

Over to you!

I think the main difference might be that for the entirety of his childhood, George saw both of his parents in the same village all of the time; Ruairi saw both of his parents in the same country for about six weeks when he was five and his mother was dying. Before that he had been pretty-much exclusively with his mother, and after it he didn't see his mother at all.

If there is one thing George absolutely is not, it is an orphan; there is a case to be made for Ruairi having been orphaned (in a slightly loose definition of the term) when he had not yet started school (they start at six in Germany). He was also transplanted from his home to another country where they spoke a different language: until then he had been speaking German. Certainly he was motherless, strictly speaking, and then the woman who had acted in that rôle was taken from him first by malice and then by death.

On the whole, I think George had it rather easier.

Ruairi wouldn't have been speaking German all the time as a child, would he? Presumably his mother spoke to him in English, and certainly he's never had the slightest trace of a German accent. I do have vague memories of him having an Irish accent when he was very young, however.

Alice was absolutely wicked to Ruiari. He was a really decent character until then. Then he became a prostitute and now he's with drippy Paul. Come on, Riuari - turn your life around!

And Alice going after poor Rex - no! Kirsty - get your skates on!

Why does being with Paul make him not-decent?

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 14/02/2026 08:54

Well, we did all want Ruairi to come back into the story as a main character.

lottiegarbanzo · 14/02/2026 09:01

R did have an Irish accent when he first appeared as a child.

BeatriceBatchelor · 14/02/2026 09:05

Why does being with Paul make him not-decent?

He stopped being a decent character as a result of the conduct of two women - Alice and Julianne. His relationship with Paul won't redeem him because Ruiari is a much stronger character (and not in a positive way) than Paul.

FatRosie · 14/02/2026 09:32

OrphanBlankly · 14/02/2026 08:37

How can Paul be ‘drippy’? A black man who’s managed to qualify and work as a vet nurse, with a steady job and good relationships with colleagues and housemates - in Borsetshire?

He sounds a pretty good catch.

And is going to be devastated when he finds out that his former sex worker boyfriend has turned to violent crime and is being protected by his rich and influential father.

@OrphanBlankly , he's working at the vet's practice where his mother works.

This reads as if you think it is remarkable that a black man has managed to achieve it, and that your expectations would be much lower.

How to become a vet nurse - PDSA

It couldn't possibly be Ruairi's fault that he's not a decent person, could it. It had to be a woman's fault.

Alice's or Julianne's conduct did not make him a gigolo.

EBearhug · 14/02/2026 09:36

Alice and Rex, after Alice and Toby... we have done going from one brother to another with the Grundys. I know there's a limit to the number of eligible men in Ambridge, but there are a load of silents living in the village, and there's always Borchester or even Felpersham, and they don't have to work with just the same families. (Mind you, last time she found someone from outside, he was an alcoholic, so...)

FatRosie · 14/02/2026 09:38

@EBearhug , after Alice and Toby When was that?

TheUsualChaos · 14/02/2026 09:44

I thought the same @OrphanBlankly , Amber has really pushed the Marky theory and seemed so panicky when George was starting to have flashbacks, I was convinced she knew the truth. They really over egged all the red herrings as some of them didn't even make any sense!

EBearhug · 14/02/2026 09:46

FatRosie · 14/02/2026 09:38

Ah, no, I'm confusing Alice and Pip. As you were.

Still, Rex deserves better.

TheUsualChaos · 14/02/2026 09:47

I called it with Alice and Rex ages ago. Poor Rex, save yourself!

FatRosie · 14/02/2026 09:53

It was Pip but it was Rex who was sweet on Pip (his taste in women!) but she procreated with his brother before she became TWFL overnight.

Kate and Toby have some 'history.

Trundlingblind · 13/02/2026 22:14

Sure, but pp saying
The Irish connection has always made R dark-haired to me” makes absolutely no sense 😅

i have several Irish friends (mostly gay men - for reasons - who all moved to Germany as very young men as soon as they could in the early 80s) and all bar one has dark hair. The other has blond hair.

I AM FURIOUS. That was... meh. Except for Brian putting R in his place at the end (I hugely enjoyed that)

but now, of course: none of the Home Farm crew have ANY leg to stand on if this carries on with Brian taking the blame, for criticising Emma for taking so long to grass on her son.

Alice and REX? I'd be quite up for that, tbh.

Brefugee · 14/02/2026 10:05

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 14/02/2026 08:54

nope. I most certainly did not.

@Brefugee but now, of course: none of the Home Farm crew have ANY leg to stand on if this carries on with Brian taking the blame, for criticising Emma for taking so long to grass on her son

Well, as long as they don't find out about it they'll be able to continue exhibiting their superiority.

Brefugee · 14/02/2026 10:12

well I'm guessing that the SW are now going to try to find a way for George to cock-up the recording (maybe Amber will find it? maybe - better - Emma??)

And then there will be a problem because Brian will "fair cop, guv'nor" and R will be all "but no, it was me" (and maybe the others will "i am Sparticus" it too, because at this stage the SW are writing bad fan fiction)

So there may now be room - praise be - for someone to say "oi, posh nobs, you're just as bad as the serfs so get off your high horses". And for Brine to have a heart attack so that Collingwood can retire with a shred of dignity intact.

ETA: Bitter? MOI?

FatRosie · 14/02/2026 10:17

Bono, Martha Kearney, Gloria Hunniford, what's her name off Woman's Hour, Saoirse Ronan, Niamh Cusack, Liam Neeson...

Most of the Irish people I know have 'mousy' (or blonde) hair.

FatRosie · 14/02/2026 10:19

George will probably take the recording to the bizzies and will frame himself in the process.

Amber may have feared it was Brad? Continuing Fallon’s theme of people covering for the wrong people.

JoelenesParrot · 14/02/2026 11:35

Ruarhi’s guilt is the sort of secret that could be buried for years and years and only come out further down the line. That would be very satisfying as a slow-burn SL.

OrphanBlankly · 14/02/2026 11:42

Ha! Nope. I certainly don’t have low expectations of all the men in my family - I do have low expectations of Ambridge scriptwriters, so I’m pretty amazed that Paul is even allowed to exist.

He certainly looks a far better prospect as a partner than Ruairi.

FatRosie · 14/02/2026 12:49

He exists because as a gay black character he ticks the 'diversity' checkboxes.

I am ok with gay and ethnic minority characters but not when I feel that it is to tick 'diversity' checkboxes.

As for achievements for black men, we have black male professors, newsreaders and athletes etc. We have had a black Chancellor of the Exchequer, Foreign Secretary, Secretary of State for Education, Home Secretary, Deputy Prime Minister etc.
Being a vet nurse in the same practice as his mother isn't quite in the same league.

i am absolutely ROFL at the idea that these, or any subsequent SW are going to run with that. 20 years ago? yep. now? hahahahahaha

crumpet · 14/02/2026 14:43

lottiegarbanzo · 13/02/2026 18:50

And rufous means red - but Rufus Sewell does not have red hair.

I was going to describe Ruairidh earlier as something of a cross between young versions of Ben Wishaw and Rufus Sewell.

Anyway, you can say what you like. You will not change my mental image of Ruairidh - tallish, slender, DARK hair.

Jolene - broadish, buxom, long, curly DARK hair!

<personal gavel>

Jolene has to be brassy blond. Fallon has brown hat though (like Jolene but without the dye😄)

Siobhan always had long red/auburn hair.
