Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you think 19 is an ideal age to have a baby with a convict, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Emma spoke sense to George and Amber tonight. Goodness only knows where this storyline is going. I can't see George being Father of the Year. Oh dear.

Over to you!

William but by the time the DNA test was done she was with Ed.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 13/02/2026 21:13

I think the main difference might be that for the entirety of his childhood, George saw both of his parents in the same village all of the time; Ruairi saw both of his parents in the same country for about six weeks when he was five and his mother was dying. Before that he had been pretty-much exclusively with his mother, and after it he didn't see his mother at all.

If there is one thing George absolutely is not, it is an orphan; there is a case to be made for Ruairi having been orphaned (in a slightly loose definition of the term) when he had not yet started school (they start at six in Germany). He was also transplanted from his home to another country where they spoke a different language: until then he had been speaking German. Certainly he was motherless, strictly speaking, and then the woman who had acted in that rôle was taken from him first by malice and then by death.

On the whole, I think George had it rather easier.

I think it would be safe to say that the DNA test was only done because she was with Ed and claiming (on the basis of a ons) that he was the father.

Plantainpusher · 13/02/2026 21:26

Maybe George won't take the recording to the police but will show it to Marky since it's Marky's mate who has been arrested. I don't think this is going to end as quietly as Brian hopes.

Ruairi was born in Ireland not Germany and he was 4 when his mother died
But I agree he hasn't had it any easier than George who was actually grew up surrounded by family and extended family who all (apart from Nic) loved and supported him) Ruairi aged 4; was forced to leave everything and everyone he knew to live with his elderly father who he didn't know and his reluctant stepmother who he had never met and grown up or almost grown up half and step siblings eh didn't know and who had little interest in him, then aged 7 when he was coming to terms with what had happened to him he was sent to boarding school. He had a very difficult childhood.

Marky is in prison George can't play the recording to him

Ruairi was born in Ireland and moved to Germany with his mother before he was a year old; he grew up there speaking German (which Brian remarked on after a flying visit to see them). I doubt he remembered much about Ireland.

Yes, four (and seven months); he was born in November 2002 and Siobhán died in June 2007, and the dates deceived me into taking 2002 from 2007 and getting 5. Pre-school either way.

In 2011 when he was rising nine he was sent to boarding school in England at his maternal grandmother's insistence (but not at her expense). Lowfield, Wednesday 11th May, 2011
"Brian's ear is bent by Bridget, saying she thinks Ruairidh is not stretched enough at Loxley Barratt school. Jennifer defends it; if it is good enough for Freddy, Lily and the Brookfield children then surely it is good enough for Ruairidh. Brian wants to look at the websites Bridget is emailing."

Brian's original plan was to send Ruairi to a local prep school, but Jennifer foresaw that she would be the one driving him to and from school every day and jibbed.

Well, Two-Dads-George is the child of a woman who was married to his biological father's brother. This may have made him technically legitimate, having been born "in wedlock", but I don't know how that works. The words "not terribly well when the truth comes out" spring to mind!

I think it's interesting that for all their delusions of superiority, the Archer family and their spin-offs (Aldridges, Pargetters and Carters) have no higher moral standards than the plebs when it comes to covering up for each other.

Emma was married to Will, who was George's father, when he was born.

Trundlingblind · 13/02/2026 22:14

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 13/02/2026 18:54

Yes, but Siobhán chose it before he was born, and I don't think hair colour shows on a scan?

Sure, but pp saying
The Irish connection has always made R dark-haired to me” makes absolutely no sense 😅

FatRosie · 13/02/2026 22:14

@Gonners , Emma was married to George's father when George was born but is now married to George's biological father's brother.

Emma had DTD with Ed around the same time as George was conceived.

Maybe, like me, the pp in question has known a fair few dark-haired Irishmen (and Irishwomen)?

Thanks for finding the link to the NYD episode(s). If you listen to Brian's interview, he sounds very ill, angry and emotional esp around the memory of Siobhan.

There's no way George is going to have anything to do with Marky. Remember, Marky still has a grudge against him for grassing him up previously.

RegimentalSturgeon · 14/02/2026 01:16

I’m pretty sure Ruairi wasn’t born in Ireland but in Borsetshire.

EBearhug · 14/02/2026 02:45

It won't matter where he was born, if it suits the scriptwriters to change things round, going by current patterns.

TeenToTwenties · 14/02/2026 06:53

Gonners · 13/02/2026 20:59

But who was she married to when George was born? It's so long ago that I no longer remember (or care) but am happy to be corrected on this.

I would have said William?
But I agree it is a long time ago and I could well be wrong.

lottiegarbanzo · 14/02/2026 07:48

Back to my earlier point about Brian providing a different form of legacy - a living legacy of self-sacrifice and protection to shield R and give him freedom to grow and thrive.

Their conversation yesterday implied this will be the making of R, as he’ll buckle down and really learn, rather than floating about with unreliable notions, thus becoming a worthy inheritor of the farm. How long does he have though, given Brian is 82?

The X-box was mentioned for a reason though. George is going to work out it was Ruairidh. May not be able to offer any evidence.

It does feel like ‘New Year, new generation’ with the Brookfield inheritance, George and Ruaridh as antagonists.

OrphanBlankly · 14/02/2026 08:12

Has Ruairi inadvertently sealed Adam’s inheritance?

That would only be fair.

BeatriceBatchelor · 14/02/2026 08:25

Alice was absolutely wicked to Ruiari. He was a really decent character until then. Then he became a prostitute and now he's with drippy Paul. Come on, Riuari - turn your life around!

And Alice going after poor Rex - no! Kirsty - get your skates on!

TeenToTwenties · 14/02/2026 06:53

Definitely William. She and Ed had their ONS after her hen night, I think. He then went away to Hungary (paid for by Oliver?). On the wedding day Emma had doubts and she and Will went into the churchyard to talk things over. She revealed she was pregnant and Will was delighted. Of course we all knew that Emma couldn't be sure who the father was, but Will knew nothing about that as he had no clue that Emma and Ed had DTD. The marriage was doomed from the start, but lasted a while. Emma threw herself into being a wife. They had a honeymoon in Cancun and on their return to Ambridge lived in the gamekeeper's cottage in the woods, which they renamed Casa Nueva. At some point Ed returned with an American girlfriend in tow, but that didn't last long. He went out with Fallon, ditto. Then the inevitable happened.

It's actually all here. I wrote the above from memory so some of it is probably wrong! https://www.bbc.co.uk/webarchive/https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bbc.co.uk%2Fblogs%2Fthearchers%2Fentries%2Fd1d4d577-d1c4-3929-984b-f94497f3f194

How can Paul be ‘drippy’? A black man who’s managed to qualify and work as a vet nurse, with a steady job and good relationships with colleagues and housemates - in Borsetshire?

He sounds a pretty good catch.

And is going to be devastated when he finds out that his former sex worker boyfriend has turned to violent crime and is being protected by his rich and influential father.

lottiegarbanzo · 14/02/2026 08:41

Paul sounds drippy but is absolutely rock solid. To the extent that I find him rather two-dimensional.

OrphanBlankly · 14/02/2026 08:41

My only query would be how Paul hasn’t noticed that Ruairi must have been on edge since New Year’s Eve.

But also, what the hell was prompting Amber’s extraordinary silencing of George’s doubts about the perpetrator? It made no sense at all if she wasn’t involved in the crime.

Fannyannie · 14/02/2026 08:45

i strongly disagree with David , Ruth’s accent, well Ruth , is highly irritating not sexy.

BeatriceBatchelor · 14/02/2026 08:46

How can Paul be ‘drippy’? A black man ...

Black men can be drippy.

How odd that you should bring colour into it. And that you have such low expectations of mixed race men that you think it's exceptional that he's got a job and gets on with some people.
