Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you think 19 is an ideal age to have a baby with a convict, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Emma spoke sense to George and Amber tonight. Goodness only knows where this storyline is going. I can't see George being Father of the Year. Oh dear.

Over to you!

Meant to add … I’d be interested in a storyline where David becomes infatuated with Esme and makes a fool of himself

AnneWhittle · 24/01/2026 18:04

theres plenty of time for Chelsea to tell Amber how relieved she was, but how she wished she'd done it sooner etc etc

Gonners · 24/01/2026 19:31

If I were Chelsea I would hesitate to tell Amber anything at all, for fear of having it passed on.

AnneWhittle · 24/01/2026 20:00

what ? to George ?

Gonners · 24/01/2026 20:24

Well to anyone, really. As far as I recall, the only people who knew were Chelsea herself, obviously, Tracy, perhaps Brad and (unfortunately) Ben. And possibly also Ben's family - I don't recall. It was nobody else's business. But if Amber told George, it would be round the entire Grundy/Horrobin clan in minutes and the consequences would be unpleasant for everyone.

WMW · 24/01/2026 20:29

Chelsea could have said to Amber, when she was doing her hair: "You don't have to go through with it, you know", without disclosing anything about herself.

Listeners would have been all "Ooh! That relates back to what she went through/did!", a bit of script/Archers richness. But no 🙄

I thought Vince knew and announced it in The Bull? Jill knew too and was most disapprovin

Yes, that's right.

Gonners · 24/01/2026 20:36

Oh, I'd forgotten about the Beth drama - possibly because I tended to confuse Beth with Bess. 😀

Vince was vile, so was Jill. Beth not much better. Bess on the other hand… one of the best characters!

(Ignore my post, didn’t see those above.)

Thanks for the new thread @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

I despair of Amber. Well I would if I cared about her at all.

LillianGish · 25/01/2026 00:23

Thanks for the new thread @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g - I don’t want to fall behind on here even though I’m feeling thoroughly disengaged with the programme itself.

Madcats · 25/01/2026 13:51

I’m placemarking (thank-you for the new thread), but have also been flipping though our latest NT Magazine that arrived recently.

Last year (and some time before) there were some TV programmes in which couples competed to get 10 year tenancies of NT farms. They interviewed the new tenants 1 & 2 years on and both couples had needed to continue with their day jobs to make the farming work for now (need to do holiday lets etc to make the farms viable).

Esme didn’t need a pay-off and would have had minimal chance of inheriting the tenancy (though I notice the SWs are now trying to pretend she spent more time on the farm than she initially suggested).

Nos4r2 · 25/01/2026 17:28

When Esme first arrived she said she wasn't interested in farming and didn't see much of her dad because it wasn't her thing. Now all of a sudden (,forgetting the hard work and TB testing and all the things to do with farming) she loves it. I find this story line so hard to believe and I would think the landlord would tell her to clear off and not offer her any money as thre farm was in her dad's name and not hers. A bit like if your name isn't on the lease you have no say and not entitled to anything.
If I was Esme I would take the money, ( that Im sure she is not entitled to ) sell the cows and clear off. Then David and Ruth can get back to farming thier own land.

Ah yes, but you're forgetting that consistency and what people would do in real life plays no part in Archers scripts these days.

OrphanBlankly · 25/01/2026 18:39

I do sincerely hope she doesn’t get it. But that would mean she has to marry Josh in order to live on her dad’s farm. Might be ok if she became a Silent.

WombatCowgirl · 25/01/2026 18:54

I'd enjoy a storyline about Ruth and maybe Pip getting jealous and resentful of the time David spends with Esme. It wouldn't have to be a romantic affair, just that level of interest and helpfulness would make me jealous. On the MN emotional affair threads there are often men who begin by helping out a damsel in distress with her DIY/car/other manly task.

Neither the current farmers, nor the wannabe ones, like Esme and Pa Malik, have ever sounded convincing when they try to speak "poetically' about why farming is the best life in the world: honest toil plus new life etc. Ruth and Akram the other day sounded like a old Mr Kipling advert.

muddyford · 25/01/2026 19:39

Bloody know-all Joy. Wish she had an exploding haggis under her. And why was George so down? Neil sounds as if he's been taking elocution lessons from Robert Peston.

FizzingAda · 25/01/2026 19:49

Surely nobody, but nobody, would leave an expensive musical instrument in a shed! MIce, damp, mould.

DeanElderberry · 25/01/2026 19:53

You'd think.

Gonners · 25/01/2026 20:05

Neil did sound very odd, to the extent that I had no idea who it was.

abortion - done with chelsea
dramatic miscarriage - done with kirsty
disability and fear of disability - multiple times

so what's left? ramping up of dv during pregnancy?

Twins maybe? I know the village already has Seren and Nova or whatever they're called, but maybe George and Amber will have twins and find themselves totally overwhelmed...
