Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you think 19 is an ideal age to have a baby with a convict, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Emma spoke sense to George and Amber tonight. Goodness only knows where this storyline is going. I can't see George being Father of the Year. Oh dear.

Over to you!

Yes Pip and Stella have a fairly big age gap. Pip is 32 and I feel like Stella is at least 45?

I can't figure out how old Esme is meant to be.

Stella's got to be at least that if not older, I somehow thought she was around Ruth's age. Weird how the age gap is never mentioned, I'm sure it would be in real life or if she was a man.

I initially thought Esme must be around 50 presuming her father died around 80. No one's said he was too young to die so must have been in old age. But her attitude and incompetence make her seem much younger. I think she must be older than josh though.

Why can't there be a straightforward normal relationship and marriage in the Archers any more? There's Pip who liked men then out of nowhere became a lesbian, now in the most passionless and unconvincing relationship ever. Then there's teenage criminal George and his airhead teenage pregnant fiancée. Yet another gay relationship with Paul and rhuairi.

Why can't Josh, lily, Freddie, for example, all in their late twenties(?)have straightforward relationships that look like they're going somewhere. In real life that would be what would be happening for at least one of them.

EBearhug · 04/02/2026 01:33

Josh was recently dumped, so I think he had been having a fairly normal heterosexual relationship, though I think mostly one-sided, with him doing all the work, hence being dumped. We just didn't hear much about it.

Nos4r2 · 04/02/2026 05:26

Really thought that Stella and Pip wasn't working, another TA couple that sounds uncomfortable together.
How did Paul guess the ring was an engagement ring, it could have any old ring the dog ate. Of course Paul would be involved as he is the only gay man in the village.

Nos4r2 · 04/02/2026 05:29

Sorry except Rhauri who can't make his mind up if he is gay bi or what ever.

OnlyFrench · 04/02/2026 05:48

I thought Pip wouldn’t have Stella’s dog around Rosie? How’s that going to work?
And where’s Hannah going to live?
And why do I care?

OrphanBlankly · 04/02/2026 07:08

Stella’s last ditch attempt to own a farm, @ScaredOfFlying…

As to where everyone will live - once Jill officially shuffles, the inheritors of the farm will kick the older generation out of the farmhouse, just as David and Ruth did with Phil and Jill.

I can’t remember whether D&R actually hated the bungalow itself, when they lived there, or simply couldn’t abide its dinky proportions? Either way, they have the option of evicting Hannah, or Carol, or spending half a mil upgrading Rickyard …

And Adam and Ian.

Me too for the vibrator assumption 😂

Abra1t · 04/02/2026 09:31

Is Pip knockout gorgeous?

Or is the attraction the farm for Stella?

bloodredfeaturewall · 04/02/2026 09:35

why the vet for a ring? surely it's a case of waiting for it to come out the other end...

OrphanBlankly · 04/02/2026 10:31

Pretty sure being a farming heiress in Ambridge would make anyone irresistible …

NetballHoop · 04/02/2026 10:36

It would have been much more realistic if Pip had proposed as she's always seemed much more in love with Stella than the other way round. Then they could have had a story line on Stella having doubts.

Saker · 04/02/2026 10:51

Helen is so incompetent. Suddenly the dairy is so busy again that they are looking to employ a new person - could no-one have foreseen this when they got rid of Clarrie, when it would have surely made sense just to reduce her and Susan's hours for a while. Now they are looking to train up a new person. I think Clarrie would have a case for unfair dismissal.

It wasn't the ring that led to the vet trip; Stella was concerned that Cleo had eaten a fragment of plate along with the cheesecake. Would have cost a bit to get her scanned. Why it wasn't Alistair the vet reporting back to Stella on the result, I don't know.

I wonder what Dave'n'Ruth will do re the succession ... because if they leave their majority shares to Pip, then Rosie is her only heir. And Rosie, although she's called Archer, is <shudder> a Fairbrother! I suppose, on the bright side, the mere suggestion that they might do this would bring on the (long-overdue) death of Jill?

OrphanBlankly · 04/02/2026 11:16

Given that it’s the 75th Anniversary year, and we already have two weddings in prospect, I wonder if they’re going for four weddings and a funeral?

Jill obviously. Not sure who the two other wedding couples might be.

Let's not forget that Helen swanned off up to Scotland, shortly after telling Clarrie she wasn't needed any more.

Maybe I am a bit naive, but wouldn't you need food hygiene certificates if working in a small dairy without much in the way of full time supervision? Presumably there is a fair bit more scope to give people food poisoning than working in a tea room, doling out hot drinks and scones?

I wonder whether Helen is still househunting?

JoelenesParrot · 04/02/2026 12:11

Why on earth did Susan not immediately suggest her great friend and former colleague Clarrie as an option? It was strange Pat didn’t mention her either. She never said she didn’t leave under a cloud so I don’t understand why Helen didn’t ring her immediately. The whole thing is very odd.

Four funerals and a wedding would be much more of a crowd-pleaser and fractionally original.

Helen and Mark Bonnar would suit me, but sadly it's not going to happen.

Alistair and Denise? Paul and Ruairidh? Chris and Alice re-marry? Brian and Miranda? Justin and Lilian finally think about inheritance tax and do the sensible thing?

Madcats · 04/02/2026 14:56

I’m pretty certain I’ve heard mention of Christine a couple of times in the past month, so I wonder whether they will have a funeral for her first?

Does Justin have ANY family that we know of?

Anyway, it is about time that they found partners for all the youngsters in their 20’s. It will be a disaster if Ambridge + 25 years is dependent on Fat Rosie, Henry, Gideon and the twins!

Gonners · 04/02/2026 15:02

Helen doesn't deserve Mark Bonnar - or even Finlay, for that matter - unless he's going to be allowed to drown her in the loch, in which case Bring It On!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 04/02/2026 15:22

Brad and anyone except Amber
Chelsea and Freddie, or someone else who is worthy of her
Bring on the Buttons! Molly, Tilly and a brother with a similar name - Billy maybe - or am I imagining that?

Ruth was not prepared to have another child while they were living at the Bungalow and put pressure on Jill to get out of her way so she could have Brookfield Farmhouse and another baby. Only then Ruth got cancer and probably wasn't going to have another baby anyway, so she used the cancer to get rid of her parents-in-law.
