Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you think 19 is an ideal age to have a baby with a convict, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Emma spoke sense to George and Amber tonight. Goodness only knows where this storyline is going. I can't see George being Father of the Year. Oh dear.

Over to you!

Well, the BBC’s character pages are wholly unreliable. Space is still dedicated to characters who left years ago, whilst others who are very current are almost ignored and have no photo.

It’s fairly clear they really don’t care about providing that service for the audience - so it isn’t worth reading anything into what one sees there.

Gonners · 02/02/2026 17:21

I've just had a quick look at that page and the Bridge Farm section still includes Lee, Johnny-the-Pirate and (for reasons that escape me) Dead Peggy (who is also on the Aldridge section but not the Lil'n'Justin one), but no mention of the stellar twins. There are other omissions and weird repetitions ... honestly, it's almost as though someone makes the occasional half-arsed attempt to update it, but nobody really cares. 😉

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 02/02/2026 17:40

A lot of the character pages are simply wrong, and fail to notice things that have happened to that character during the past ten years.

For instance "Now at university, Ruairi is not only geographically distanced from the Aldridges but emotionally too after Alice, in an alcohol-fuelled rant, told him he was never wanted in the family. Thus, undermining years of work Jennifer put into making Ruairi feel loved."

For Clarrie,
Occupation:
Dairy worker
Lives at:
Grange Farm
Works at:
Bridge Farm

Mia "hopes to go to University and will be one of the first in her family to do so."
(Who are the others who have?)

Fallon is still "Manager of the Tea Room", Hannah still lives at 1 The Green, Roy still "dabbles in dating", and Philip Moss is "currently serving a prison sentence for his crime." He was sentenced to eight years in prison in April 2021 so he is probably out by now (Gavin got five years at the same time and was around in December 2024).

Gonners · 02/02/2026 17:52

In the case of Mia going to university, nobody has any idea who in her family went to university, given that her parents weren't from Ambridge. For all we know her father, Andrew, may have come from a long line of Professors of Very Important Studies!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 02/02/2026 17:54

True, but if so I am surprised neither she nor Will nor Brad ever mentioned it.

OrphanBlankly · 02/02/2026 19:15

I’m really not sure I’ve ever heard George and Josh in conversation before …

CaptainMyCaptain · 02/02/2026 19:15

Josh was being horrible.

AnneWhittle · 02/02/2026 19:22

he was but I had a hearing blip and thought he was someone called John which was really confusing
Amber's mum needs to be a lot more clever

muddyford · 02/02/2026 19:31

I'm no George fan but but was cheering him on. None of Josh's business. Loathsome little tick.

MorningCoffeePlease · 02/02/2026 19:31

CaptainMyCaptain · 02/02/2026 19:15

Josh was being horrible.

Agree. He was like a rutting stag threatening George with his antlers.

Yep. Twat

I expect they mentioned it off-air. 😉Other possibilities are that they didn't mention it in Ambridge for fear of being ostracised/beaten up.

And now I'm off to listen ... we ate early this evening because we were cold!

I couldn’t agree more.
For once I think the SWs are playing a blinder with the George getting work SL, the real difficulties facing an ex-prisoner. Before you even get to his living and wanting work locally. And what he did.
Each twist and turn is calculated to press his buttons and end with a loss of temper.

I don't think the issue with George is that he's an ex-prisoner. It's that he's George!

BeatriceBatchelor · 03/02/2026 01:15

Disappointed in Josh but I'll let it go because (a) he's Ruth's son and Pip's brother so he's bound to be mean sometimes. And (b) it was intended to show how keen he is on Esme. Alas, it appears unreciprocated.

How long would it take George to milk the cows and what do we reckon he'd be paid? Who's doing the afternoon milking?

Nos4r2 · 03/02/2026 05:26

I too think Stella is not that into Pip, I have thought that from the start when Pip sort of decided become a lesbian and make a play, ( forced herself), on Stella.
Josh is being horrible and yes I was cheering for George. I hope Esme tells Josh "not to bother coming round and thanks for all your help but I have George now",sort of thing.

OrphanBlankly · 03/02/2026 05:43

The thing is … Esme and Josh already sound like a couple.

ExitPursuedByABare · 03/02/2026 07:53

Who was buying the boiler suits from Amber? Sounded like Ben but why would he need them?

What hours is George working? Morning milking can’t take that long.

CaptainMyCaptain · 03/02/2026 08:13

I wondered about the boiler suit thing but decided it was just a random anonymous customer so we knew where she was.

OrphanBlankly · 03/02/2026 08:30

I was quite confused - because Amber’s mother would not have a daughter doing the job Amber does.

Amber’s mother would have pulled every string in the northern hemisphere to get her daughter into art school, or an apprenticeship with a swanky interior designer, or, or, or …

Am I just too old to listen to this nonsense? Or are the SWs too young to know how the world works?

EBearhug · 03/02/2026 08:33

I don't think Amber's mother would have had much choice in Amber's job - I get the impression Amber went her own way after whatever previous disagreement they had.

OrphanBlankly · 03/02/2026 08:37

Well I hope we’ll hear what that was. (And it wasn’t a dead dog.) Because at the moment I’m seeing no logical connection between the three Gordon family members we’ve now heard from.

Darker · 03/02/2026 09:26

I imagine that for plot reasons, Amber has to work somewhere that the Ambridge farming community might plausibly hang out, which isn’t another tea room or pub.
Although the farm supplies shop inexplicably also seems to have a cafe…

Nah, that's not that weird. I know a bunch of such stores that have cafés attached, or that have at least a coffee machine for customers.

Aquamarineviolet · 03/02/2026 13:04

Of the two farm supplies shop nearest us one has a basic but busy cafe serving bacon rolls etc and the other has a seating area with vending machines.
