Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you think Steph Casey is a wonderful addition to the programme, or similar odd views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/4197199--The-Archers-spoilers-thread-6-Cant-wait-for-7-02pm-Join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Too dispirited to add much else. Have we reached a new low?

I suppose the Archer twins will be born before we need a new thread. 👶👶
Any thoughts on names? Patrick and Antonia were suggested before - inspired! Peggy has to be a strong contender.

Over to you!

Going back to Monday, why was it Lynda who bustled in to save the say re the hall double booking? Not her job, but more importantly wouldn't she have actually been pleased to see Adil's presentation fail?

(but I may have been listening with only half an ear so apologies if it was explained)

I don't know why she was asked but she loves to be the one to save the day.

aDayattheLido · 04/08/2022 02:34

Did Adil say at the presentation that it would be a hotel without a reception?

There was something like that wasn't there? What could that indicate?

True, but her overt loathing of Adil surely overrides everything else!

I think her desire to be the star of the show and saviour of the day is overriding.

CaptainMyCaptain · 04/08/2022 08:21

Now she feels he is in her debt and she has the upper hand.

TonightMatthewIamgoingtobecher · 04/08/2022 08:39

Lynda didn't save the day did she? It was Adil the android making friends with the Scottish dancers.

OK. Someone asked why she had come to help/was asked to come. I wasn't paying attention.

Adil definitely clocking up the points with Lynda and Justin. And definitely sharp with Oliver for missing the launch.

It was Justin he was sharp with about missing the presentation, and said he didn't have time to go over it again just for Justin. But then he made time to take him and Ruby to the vet.

Oliver was at the presentation and apparently roped in for the Scottish dancing after, though we were spared witnessing that.

I imagine Oliver danced with Caroline at hunt balls.

Just made me think is saintly Shula still master of the hunt?

@TheBikiniExpert, you were asking yesterday what's been happening in the last year. Welcome back! It's been a dire year on The Archers, but we plod on regardless, hoping for better. Triumph of hope over experience, probably, but I for one am addicted. Anyway, here are a few highlights. (I did try to post some yesterday but I was on my phone at the time and lost the whole thing when MN froze. Thanks, update.)

Alice and Chris have a daughter, Martha, who is now a toddler. Alice is a recovering alcoholic and she and Chris are getting divorced. They share care of Martha 50:50. The financial split was getting very acrimonious but then Martha fell over and had to be taken to A&E and Alice and Chris both blamed themselves because they were arguing and not properly watching Martha. So now Chris is taking a holiday cottage from Alice's share of Home Farm and nothing else. He and Martha live in the flat over the Post Office. Alice is living in their old home (another former Home Farm holiday cottage).

Jazzer and Tracy Horrobin are an item and Jazzer has moved in with Tracy and her daughter Chelsea, a trainee hairdresser, and Brad, who is a genius and about to take Maths, Physics and Further Maths/Engineering A levels (he hasn't fixed on the last one). Brad and Chelsea are both working at Lower Loxley in The Orangery. Chelsea is annoying but talented with hair so may go far.

Grey Gables has closed suddenly for refurbishment as Oliver has sold a large share in the business to someone else (we don't know who). All the GG staff were made redundant. There is much ill feeling about this. Roy is working for the new owner's representative, Adil Shah, who has (incredibly) decided to stay at Ambridge Hall as a B&B guest of Lynda and Robert. Lynda is being very rude to him.

Pip is worried that her daughter Rosie is getting fat and Jill's Millionaire's shortbread is being blamed. Rosie starts school in September. Toby is still around but I can't remember what he's supposed to be doing. Rex went to live on a houseboat many months ago and hasn't been mentioned since, so he's either drowned or drifted away and no one has noticed. His pigs are now at Lower Loxley.

The new manager at Home Farm, Stella, lives in Bert Fry's bungalow. She and Ruth are very chummy.

There was a bit of a scare over the possibility of closing the pig unit, but it's been reprieved. What with the stress of that and the divorce, Brian had a bad attack of angina but seems to be OK now.

Phoebe has gone to work in Scotland. Kirsty now works on the rewilding scheme. She is still lodging with Roy and their relationship is still platonic.

George Grundy now has a voice and appears to be without any redeeming features at all. He is a bully and almost certainly a criminal. Hmm.

As you will have heard in the last few days, Tom Archer's wife Natasha has given birth to twin girls. She has moved her business to Bridge Farm. They also run a venture called Bridge Fresh. Helen is still with Lee and they live with Henry and Jack in Kirsty's old house. Were you listening during the time when Kirsty's husband Philip was convicted of modern slavery? He's in prison now and they're divorced.

Shula is still training to be a vicar. This is still tedious.

There are indications that Alistair and his vet nurse Denise might eventually pair off. She is unhappily married.

Kate and Jakob, the other vet, are still an item.

The Ambridge cricket team nearly folded from lack of interest this year, but Tracy (club captain) managed to put together a squad of veterans (mixed sex) and so they limp on, often literally.

Ben Archer is training to be a nurse and is in a settled relationship with Beth Casey, whose Dad Vince is Elizabeth's partner. There was an appalling period a few weeks ago when Beth's sister Steph featured but best we draw a veil over that now.

There must be more, but that'll do for a start!

Phew, thanks for that! My OH, who died at the very start of Lockdown 1 but unconnected, and I had a little OAP routine, lunch listening to The Archers then Countdown! Since his death I've listened to nor watched either, though I was happy to watch 8/10 Cats do Countdown as he loathed it. I've just watched a few Countdowns, post Robinson, so a massive Archers catch-up is required.

TherapistInATabard · 04/08/2022 13:58

I’m sorry for your loss @JudgeJ .

I’m sure there have been some good bits in The Archers, but really it’s been quite dire for some time ☹️

TheHideAndSeekingHill · 04/08/2022 14:11

I'm so sorry for the loss of your husband @JudgeJ and the loss of your routines as well. Time for a new routine - dance around the room to Taylor Swift then down a long island iced tea during the Archers?

Re: Adil - I don't like to be crude on MN but the way some people (Roy, Oliver, now Justin) are around him being so marrrrvellous, they really sound like they want to do what Kirsty was suspected of doing during the Great Trouser Spillage.

I hope Ruby is ok though, I'm just not sure why Justin was treating Adil like the mother of his children (dog) rather than just a dude staying in the same B&B.

LillianGish · 04/08/2022 15:31

So sorry for your loss @JudgeJ If you want to return to TA, maybe you could considering tuning in at 7pm or even on a Sunday morning for the film? One thing's for sure - if you have the slightest query about any plot development or character, need to vent your rage about an inconsistency or shed a communal tear at a touching moment you know exactly where to come Brew WineArchers

WhoppingBigBackside · 04/08/2022 16:55

Sorry about your loss @JudgeJ.
There have been many an episode where have thought of never listening again , but I'm still listening and complaining on here

TonightMatthewIamgoingtobecher · 04/08/2022 20:27

Sorry for your loss @JudgeJ we have given an overview of perhaps the more rubbish storylines but most of us still bear with it so you can get updates here if you wish.

Did anyone listen tonight? Will Peggy go ahead with her lady bountiful church window? How will that work anyway wouldn't that mean they have to take an existing window out?

Archers-worthy photo in the Times today:

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 05/08/2022 08:20

Hello, @JudgeJ, and welcome to the thread. Flowers I'm very sorry to hear about your husband. If you do start listening again, you know where to find other addicts with whom to discuss the minutiae!

I listened last night. Looks like Ruby is going to be OK. There was a tricky moment in the op where Denise saved the day. They could hardly have made it clearer that Alistair is going to end up with Denise (good). The window is up in the air (H&S nightmare, obv Grin). Natasha doesn't want it, Helen thinks they should accept it, so does Tom now. Yawn.

MuddlerInLaw · 05/08/2022 08:29

My condolences, JudgeJ.

You might find skimming through some of the threads of the last few months quite entertaining.

I have to agree with those who are finding Adil’s dying swan voice somewhat wearying. It makes it awful hard to 🚢 him with Kirsty, despite their shared interests.

BlossomsOnATree · 05/08/2022 08:58

Adil is way too good to be true and I also see him as very handsome, a bit like Raza Jaffrey in my mind. But they can’t be lining up Kirsty for yet another disappointment! Unless maybe a disaster with Adil finally makes her see that Roy is The One.

I don’t catch every episode but I’m actually finding it more bearable at the moment for some reason. I like Justin and dog storyline and I like the Caseys. Can’t get on with Natasha, I liked her more when she was mysteriously evil.

Quia · 05/08/2022 09:43

I do hope Natasha digs in her heels about the window. Such a ridiculous idea.

stilldumdedumming · 05/08/2022 11:08

Hellin was ridiculous. How H and J see it now could be pretty different from when they're older. How would she not see that?! They talk about not repeating how hurt Tony has been and then simper on about how special the window will be and how Gran's heart is in the right place. Actually- it's the simpering that got to me!!!

EBearhug · 05/08/2022 12:27

Why has no one suggested a compromise- not a window to celebrate the two twins, but a more general celebration of children or something.

Although, an educational fund or something would probably be more useful, especially in a church that is presumably already fully windowed.
