Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you think Steph Casey is a wonderful addition to the programme, or similar odd views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/4197199--The-Archers-spoilers-thread-6-Cant-wait-for-7-02pm-Join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Too dispirited to add much else. Have we reached a new low?

I suppose the Archer twins will be born before we need a new thread. 👶👶
Any thoughts on names? Patrick and Antonia were suggested before - inspired! Peggy has to be a strong contender.

Over to you!

They're saying Caitlin as Kate-Lyn.

I don't think the fire was started by George. I reckon it was the incendiary language used in the letter causing it to self-combust

@TheBikiniExpert , Adil and Kursedy seem to have hit it off.
Lily is thinking of going to college to study Land Management.
Lily and Freddie have made a bet that Freddie will make a complete hit out of something.
Shula decided she was in love with Neyull and has told Alistair, Neyull has had a personality transplant. Those stories have died down
Mere was struggling to cope around the time of her GCSEs and Chelsea was horrid to her. Wiwyum has taken up pottery.
Phoeble has started a new job somewhere north of Glasgow.
Tracey is working in the chicken factory and Gemma her boss seems to be picking on her.
The Dower House is having a new kitchen.
Ruairi is at university in London, and has an extravagant lifestyle funded by Julianne, who is some sort of sugarmummy.

@TheBikiniExpert, you were asking yesterday what's been happening in the last year. Welcome back! It's been a dire year on The Archers, but we plod on regardless, hoping for better. Triumph of hope over experience, probably, but I for one am addicted. Anyway, here are a few highlights. (I did try to post some yesterday but I was on my phone at the time and lost the whole thing when MN froze. Thanks, update.)

Alice and Chris have a daughter, Martha, who is now a toddler. Alice is a recovering alcoholic and she and Chris are getting divorced. They share care of Martha 50:50. The financial split was getting very acrimonious but then Martha fell over and had to be taken to A&E and Alice and Chris both blamed themselves because they were arguing and not properly watching Martha. So now Chris is taking a holiday cottage from Alice's share of Home Farm and nothing else. He and Martha live in the flat over the Post Office. Alice is living in their old home (another former Home Farm holiday cottage).

Jazzer and Tracy Horrobin are an item and Jazzer has moved in with Tracy and her daughter Chelsea, a trainee hairdresser, and Brad, who is a genius and about to take Maths, Physics and Further Maths/Engineering A levels (he hasn't fixed on the last one). Brad and Chelsea are both working at Lower Loxley in The Orangery. Chelsea is annoying but talented with hair so may go far.

Grey Gables has closed suddenly for refurbishment as Oliver has sold a large share in the business to someone else (we don't know who). All the GG staff were made redundant. There is much ill feeling about this. Roy is working for the new owner's representative, Adil Shah, who has (incredibly) decided to stay at Ambridge Hall as a B&B guest of Lynda and Robert. Lynda is being very rude to him.

Pip is worried that her daughter Rosie is getting fat and Jill's Millionaire's shortbread is being blamed. Rosie starts school in September. Toby is still around but I can't remember what he's supposed to be doing. Rex went to live on a houseboat many months ago and hasn't been mentioned since, so he's either drowned or drifted away and no one has noticed. His pigs are now at Lower Loxley.

The new manager at Home Farm, Stella, lives in Bert Fry's bungalow. She and Ruth are very chummy.

There was a bit of a scare over the possibility of closing the pig unit, but it's been reprieved. What with the stress of that and the divorce, Brian had a bad attack of angina but seems to be OK now.

Phoebe has gone to work in Scotland. Kirsty now works on the rewilding scheme. She is still lodging with Roy and their relationship is still platonic.

George Grundy now has a voice and appears to be without any redeeming features at all. He is a bully and almost certainly a criminal. Hmm.

As you will have heard in the last few days, Tom Archer's wife Natasha has given birth to twin girls. She has moved her business to Bridge Farm. They also run a venture called Bridge Fresh. Helen is still with Lee and they live with Henry and Jack in Kirsty's old house. Were you listening during the time when Kirsty's husband Philip was convicted of modern slavery? He's in prison now and they're divorced.

Shula is still training to be a vicar. This is still tedious.

There are indications that Alistair and his vet nurse Denise might eventually pair off. She is unhappily married.

Kate and Jakob, the other vet, are still an item.

The Ambridge cricket team nearly folded from lack of interest this year, but Tracy (club captain) managed to put together a squad of veterans (mixed sex) and so they limp on, often literally.

Ben Archer is training to be a nurse and is in a settled relationship with Beth Casey, whose Dad Vince is Elizabeth's partner. There was an appalling period a few weeks ago when Beth's sister Steph featured but best we draw a veil over that now.

There must be more, but that'll do for a start!

Wow that's a fantastic synopsis! I'm trying to think is anything missing. Kathy made a brief reappearance as the Easter bunny and now she is gone for good, travelling the world. Peggy's evil stepdaughter? Can't remember her name, made a reappearance was frail but still bad and now she has gone too and lovely lonely Geordie woman is missing in action and PC Plod has found God.

I realize I am what is known as an unreliable witness and can't remember names (or faces, but that's less of an issue).

TheBikiniExpert · 27/07/2022 12:52

Thank you @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g and @WhoppingBigBackside for the updates. I will try not to fall behind again!

TheBikiniExpert · 27/07/2022 12:53

(I am already finding Shula and Pip extremely tedious).

LizziesTwin · 27/07/2022 12:57

Going back to Ruairi sailing off Antigua, if he has friends with rich parents he might be, but it’s off season so I don’t know why Julianne would want to be there now. Caribbean is for the winter darling, we move our boat to the Med for the summer. <not me>.

WhoppingBigBackside · 27/07/2022 13:28

The Geordie woman is called Joy, and Peggy's evil step-daughter is called Hazel.
Phoeble gave Roy and Kate a goldfish each. Kate's goldfish Roy has died, but Kate, Roy's goldfish is AFAIK still alive.

Thanks I knew both names but totally brain fog! Totally forgot the thrilling fish storyline.

WhoppingBigBackside · 27/07/2022 14:47

I hope we can forget about the Casey sisters. The fish SL was exhilarating in comparison.

These recaps are depressing makes me realise how duff the Archers is these days. I am similarly addicted.

dunno, I'm amusing myself considering how various Archers characters would welcome their newborns according to stereotype

WhoppingBigBackside · 27/07/2022 17:02

Maybe Helen will have a baby with Lee, or Kursedy with Adil. Adil's mother might only speak to him in Urdu and Kursedy would feel left out no, they probably wouldn't go there, would they?

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 27/07/2022 17:15

Geordie woman is missing in action

So is Johnny. It's ridiculous.

Madcats · 27/07/2022 17:47

You all forgot to mention that Amy popped down for a while after Alice and Chris had split up. She stopped midwifing (and forgot about money for 6 months), had a brief fling with Chris and then went back up to Nottingham sounding as miserable as ever.

Rex's pigs were thrown off Bridge farm land so Josh(?) could establish a bigger chicken flock there. Miraculously Elizabeth found acres of hitherto forgotten land at Lower Loxley and now the Orangery (sometimes a posh restaurant/sometimes a glorified tea room) now serves the pork meat.

Even more unlikely was the news that the Am had expanded beyond recognition and is now navigable. Rex lives on a canal boat and is trying to restore it.

As far as we are aware, Rex still shares a bed with Pip, but it is a platonic relationship. He sold Scruff Gin, but did nothing worthy of a mention with the proceeds.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 27/07/2022 17:48

Another hanging plotline is that Home Farm was sold several years ago now to pay off the huge fines and costs incurred as a result of Brian's illegal actions around burying toxic waste in the 1970s which then poisoned the Am in the 2010s. (Something like that, anyway.) The mysterious Gills bought it and we've never heard about them again. Brian and Jennifer live in a tiny 2-bedroom rented cottage next door to Roy and Kirstie and have done nothing about buying a new home. Why not? It makes no sense.

Amy sponged off Alan and Usha but did earn something from dogwalking. There are lots of dogwalkers in our area, so I assume it is a viable way to make a living, although I have no insight into whether they have other jobs, or partners with well-paid jobs, or inheritances, or massive savings from earlier careers in the City or law. We don't have a dog so I know little about the economics of this burgeoning industry. Does it pay well?

Also, who is walking those dogs now that Amy has buggered off?

(Toby, not Rex in that last paragraph, but I know you know that.)

Especially as they've got holiday cottages which weren't sold, but Chris will get one of them as his divorce settlement.

BorsetshireBanality · 27/07/2022 20:03

…and they’ve got 1000 acres to build a new house for themselves on.

Madcats · 28/07/2022 08:15

Yes I do have a mental block about the Fairbrothers. They sound the same to me.

Isn't it a bit odd that they don't have girlfriends? Even silent ones? Toby was a serial womaniser when he first arrived.

MereDintofPandiculation · 28/07/2022 10:19

George Grundy now has a voice rather like the sneering voice of Will at his worst. Or was that Will I heard talking about there being no evidence as to who set fire to the postbox?

There are indications that Alistair and his vet nurse Denise I read that v as a w Grin

Current story is the Brad, who is turning out to be a decent lad, can’t go to the summer school he’s got a scholarship to because Tracey can’t afford his fare to Manchester, and Chelsea, who has transmogrified into a brat, has relieved Brad of his meagre savings to buy Tracey a spa day which she has given no indication she wants or will enjoy.

WhoppingBigBackside · 28/07/2022 16:30

Ruairi in NYT

WhoppingBigBackside · 28/07/2022 19:56

There you have it. Toe B is still living with Pip.
Maybe Advil has contacts who could give Brad a work placement.
Why is Chelsea behaving like a brat?
Why are the Fairbrethren still there?
