Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to share a camomile tea with Kate, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @LillianGish for the excellent Bert Fry tribute title!

I don't think this thread will get us to Easter, but we should be well into Lent before we need a new title. I wonder if St Stephen's will have a new oh-so-interesting Lent initiative this year. When did we last hear from Alan?

Well I'm more optimistice - I predict a Roman Christmas panto/spectacular

Langsdestiny · 24/02/2020 20:57

I didn't like Roman. I was glad she didn't let him in Grin

MikeUniformMike · 24/02/2020 20:58

I thought you posted Roman Christmas baby.
Trolley certainly sounds better than Trayman.

I'm gutted that Yakult is no more. There's is still time for a Christmas J-Kub/Yakid.

Where are you when we need you, AmbridgeFortyPlusFertilityFairy?

SurpriseSparDay · 24/02/2020 20:58

That would be fine - but he also needs a new source of income.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 24/02/2020 21:16

Would the police really have any particular interest in reports that a man who is dead abused a child sixty years ago? I think Jim has to let that drop at this point. He said it himself some weeks ago now: by dying, Jayston has escaped and in some sense won. But there is now nothing that can be done about that.

MereDintofPandiculation · 24/02/2020 21:46

Do you mean Shires is a real beer, MereDint? No, I think it is a suitably rustic sounding made-up name. It's just that various people seeking a suitably rustic name for their brewery or their beer also hit upon "Shires".

MereDintofPandiculation · 24/02/2020 21:49

Weevil Grin

Langsdestiny I didn't like Roman either

MUM - what do you mean "Yakult is no more"? Shock

nettie434 · 24/02/2020 22:15

probably already living beyond his means, won’t be able to afford wherever he lives, scratching around for a job, begging to move in with her ... And she’ll start finding him less attractive as he becomes more needy and hard to drop ..

So far, I think Tracy has been the one who has organised their outings - eg the Greek plate smashing, the work outing where their romance started, the double agent Valentine dinner. She obviously hasn’t had to pay herself but has got them free wining and dining. I am very over infested but I have been worried for Tracy that Roman may not be all he seems.

Choccyp1g · 24/02/2020 22:56

I thought that Roman was going to start a theatre group for difficult children, starting with Tracy's.

R4 · 24/02/2020 23:43

I really didn't like the actor who plays an actor explaining what a hard life it is to be an actor and giving us the nuts & bolts of the thespian life.
My disbelief is well and truly un-suspended.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 25/02/2020 00:28

Yes, DDD, that's exactly what Alistair was doing.

I can explain how it's done, if you like.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 25/02/2020 00:32

Doesn't Tracy's (possibly elderly and disreputable) father live with her and the kids?

Or have I imagined that? Confused

EBearhug · 25/02/2020 00:45

I once explained to colleagues how they collect AI samples, which I learnt about on a YFC trip to an AI farm. It started with a conversation about how AI doesn't first mean artificial intelligence to me.

SurpriseSparDay · 25/02/2020 07:17

Actually, (photo!) Tracy moved in with her dad rather than the other way around.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 25/02/2020 08:38

I don't think we've ever heard anything to suggest Bert Horrobin is disreputable, but the fact that over half his offspring have spent time at Her Majesty's pleasure and others have been lucky to avoid it is quite suggestive, I suppose. Grin

I can explain how it's done, if you like.

There's a part of me that is naturally curious, and there's a part of me that is using my imagination and is a bit reluctant to see the details in black and white. As a compromise, maybe you could describe the device used (or share a picture Shock ) and we'll figure out how it works? (picture does not have to feature animal or part thereof!)

LillianGish · 25/02/2020 10:01

Just caught up after a ten day break so I maybe a bit late with the observation that Lynda in chains outside the pub reminded me of Sam Beckett’s Winnie in Happy Days (buried up to her waste in a pile of earth) - Robert in the wings, calling for a brolly, reading War and Peace. One of my fave Beckett plays, but slightly too absurd for TA (almost as surreal as catching up with this thread to find posts from Diana conspiracy theorists). I have no idea where the pub storyline is going and care even less although Lynda is one of my favourite characters.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 25/02/2020 10:04

Haha! I knew you'd be curious, DDD!

I'll see what I can do....

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 25/02/2020 10:14

Here you go, DDD.

It's not as bad as it might look.

It's the top one in the picture, by the way.

The other two electrodes are for much smaller animals.

It's a fascinating technique.

DadDadDad · 25/02/2020 10:53

My imagination was saying "there'll be electrodes"; a part of me was hoping there wouldn't be electrodes... Confused Curiosity satisfied.

Madcats · 25/02/2020 11:14

Well this is a thread and a half! What with discussions about Princess Diana and now AI.

Were it not for the fact that I liked the scene at the cemetery with Michael and Jim, and hoped he might feature in the cast again one day, I'd be annoyed at Jim's ridiculous googling and the newspaper article. Our local newspaper is just stuffed with articles criticising the local schools, and stories about shops/restaurants/pubs opening and closing.

I suspect that Tracey is a little embarrassed at the state of her home or worried about introducing her Dad and Gary (does he still live there?).
Wouldn't it be wonderful if Roman's "Oliver Sterling" was the owner of Lower Loxley. He must be about the same age as CMR.

MereDintofPandiculation · 25/02/2020 11:36

Wouldn't it be wonderful if Roman's "Oliver Sterling" was the owner of Lower Loxley. He must be about the same age as CMR What would be lovely is if Roman's "Oliver Sterling" was in the north of Scotland or E Kent or somewhere else that took Roman a long way from Ambridge.

Fink · 25/02/2020 12:33

I'm happy to see the electrodes. I was watching Mountain Vets on the BBC last year and there was quite a disturbing scene where the vet had to collect semen from a dog. There was no equipment involved, just, err, manual manipulation and vocal encouragement. It was weird.

MereDintofPandiculation · 25/02/2020 13:02

vocal encouragement. talking dirty to a dog? Grin
