Archers thread #115: Johnny's in the gym, Josh is in a jam, Rex is riled, Kate's with child - discuss The Archers here

Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to share a camomile tea with Kate, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @LillianGish for the excellent Bert Fry tribute title!

I don't think this thread will get us to Easter, but we should be well into Lent before we need a new title. I wonder if St Stephen's will have a new oh-so-interesting Lent initiative this year. When did we last hear from Alan?

That call-handler. Was it Kirsty?

Langsdestiny · 10/03/2020 14:14

No wonder they have been banging on about kirstys weekend away for the last few weeks. She will blame herself or Philip will blame her.

nettie434 · 10/03/2020 14:28

That call-handler. Was it Kirsty?

I thought it sounded like her too Fanthorpe.

fairislecable · 10/03/2020 14:34

I haven’t listened for weeks but that was gripping, however it was slightly marred by the continuity announcer saying “ there is bad news for Robert in tonight’s episode” !! Confused

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 10/03/2020 14:49

I no longer pay the least attention to anything they tell me in advance; I have read and heard too many of their one-line spoilers that were completely misleading.

woodencoffeetable · 10/03/2020 14:59

johnny's dodgy tablets building up gasses in the pipework?
public health information about not buying meds over the internet..

lottiegarbanzo · 10/03/2020 15:00

Bad news is a red herring. Letting him know she'd been in the accident is bad news for Robert.

Amused at the idea of Kirsty as Ambridge's Miss Rabbit (peripatetic multi-worker of Peppa Pig fame) Grin

Much as the Freddie and Lynda denoument was good, I was a bit shocked, the other night, at how rude he was being to her. With his upbringing and schooling, it surprised me (and grated).

MereDintofPandiculation · 10/03/2020 15:03

Bad news is a red herring. Letting him know she'd been in the accident is bad news for Robert. And designed to get us all listening. Whereas in fact there will be absolutely no new news abut Lynda and we might as well give the episode a miss.

mrsBtheparker · 10/03/2020 15:07

If she does die can I suggest Robert and Joy as a pairing eventually??? If Phil has put some odd-bods in the kitchen to do the job, or Gavin has, then Phil's insurance might have a case for declining any claim.

MereDintofPandiculation · 10/03/2020 15:09

40 messages left - we need a new thread. Titles?

BoreOfWhabylon · 10/03/2020 15:11

If Lynda dies, Robert will eventually move away and Brine and JennyD will buy Ambridge Hall.

mrsBtheparker · 10/03/2020 15:11

I was cheering Freddie on when he wouldn't accept her apology, she created a situation out of something and nothing, implied that Freddie had slid back into his old ways and could have ruined his attempts to sort himself out. If she was genuinely concerned she should have spoken to him first before telling the rest of the staff. If she is dead then I hope Freddie isn't made to feel bad about not accepting her 'apology'.

BoreOfWhabylon · 10/03/2020 15:16

That wasn't Lynda, though. The SWs made her do it.

MereDintofPandiculation · 10/03/2020 16:00

If she is dead then I hope Freddie isn't made to feel bad about not accepting her 'apology'. If she is dead, Freddie will feel that if it wasn't for him she wouldn't have gone into the kitchen, so he'll feel it's his fault she died.

Any thoughts for title of new thread?

BoreOfWhabylon · 10/03/2020 16:04

I liked the suggestion by SurpriseSparDay

BOOM! The aftermath. Archers thread #116

ADarkandStormyKnight · 10/03/2020 16:08

I agree re Freddie telling Lynda what's what. She deserved it.

I'm sorry for Kirsty who's wedding will once again be cancelled, and Philip will be ruined.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 10/03/2020 16:09

I've got a new thread ready to go in a new tab but will wait till we're a bit closer to 1000.

I agree it was good Freddie stood up to Lynda but there was a moment when I just thought 'Freddie! manners!' about the way he spoke to her.

UnholyStramash · 10/03/2020 16:47

Goodness me, it’s taken me till about 40 minutes ago to remember there is tension in Ambridge. DS the microbiology grad is here for one day only. No prize for guessing what topic distracted me from events in Ambridge.

theThreeofWeevils · 10/03/2020 16:54

To be fair, she did. She just refused to believe what he said.

To those surprised at how 'rude' Freddie was to the nebby and obnoxious bullying busybody: I feel he was remarkably restrained and it would be a great pity were he to blame himself. If she hadn't been such an interfering cah, she would have had no cause to be in the staff-room, or kitchen, or wherever it was that she did get blown up. I am only sorry that Ian wasn't on a KIT day at the time Grin

WhatHaveIFound · 10/03/2020 16:56

I have found my tribe!

Archers listener of many years here wondering if there's any way i can sneak out from Parents Evening. Maybe i shoud just let DH deal with the teachers between 7 and 7.15pm?

I fear Lynda is dead and blame Gavin completely for palming the job off on a random workman!

MereDintofPandiculation · 10/03/2020 17:09

Gaspode cheers! Wine I'll stop worrying then.

UnholyStramash · 10/03/2020 17:36

@springydaff, that must have been scary but please excuse me not joining a group hug in the current circs. Though I suppose an online group hug is safe enough. Hmm

PS I’m getting through this thread so slowly bc people keep talking to me. Very inconsiderate of them though I love them all dearly. And PM is on too. Only 1 1/2 hours till TA, well less than.

lottiegarbanzo · 10/03/2020 17:39

I must admit, I used to detest Lynda, in my 20s. Now, 20ish years later, I've really warmed to her - to her good intentions, good heart and great efforts for the common good, however blunt and blundering she can be sometimes. What I don't quite know, is whether it's her, or me, who has really changed!

(I despised Joe when I was young too, seeing him as habitually exploiting Clarrie and others, to selfish ends. I don't think I was wrong about that but did mellow towards him, perhaps on account of his age, generational expectations and again, good heart).

UnholyStramash · 10/03/2020 17:43

The image of Gavin in his underpants playing his x box is so very clear - now I’ll forever view him as a sort of 21st century Welsh Rab C Nisbet (so no clarty string vest!)
