Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Joy's best friend or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks for all the input on title suggestions. I'd missed the significance of 111, but @R4 and DDD, our resident numerologist, were right on to it. Strongly tempted by Bore's suggestion but couldn't resist the chance to mention my favourite ever Archers character, Nelson Gabriel. Have not managed to incorporate a cricket reference, so you'll have to read up on that for yourselves. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nelson_(cricket)

I wonder if this thread will last till Joe's funeral.

Yes I did laugh at Shula having to think about herself for a change!

ADarkandStormyKnight · 28/10/2019 08:03

I hated hearing Freddie needling Shula about reading the autobigraphy. Rude!

BertrandRussell · 28/10/2019 08:06

“ I hated hearing Freddie needling Shula about reading the autobigraphy. Rude!”

Yes, me too. Entitled brat!

NewName73 · 28/10/2019 08:06

I may be obsessive about this ... but you never ever hear anyone saying 'Just going to take the dog out'.

(The other plot lines at the moment are too dire to engage with)

RandomlyChosenName · 28/10/2019 08:11

Did I miss hear or did Clarke make a comment about hanging up Alf’s pants...?

As far as I know, pants is never a word for trousers in the UK. So did she mean literal pants or has she become weirdly American?

birdsdestiny · 28/10/2019 08:19

I think it's partly the nature of soaps new name, in the same way that people don't watch television or do a weekly food shop, we sometimes here good shopping referenced at Brookfield but every one else appears to do all their shopping at the tiny village store

Me too.:o

StVincent is your username a reference to the singer?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/10/2019 08:51

She must have meant literal pants, much like the storylines at present.

OP posts:
R4 · 28/10/2019 08:53

I took it to mean "literal pants". It's the law, innit: Clarrie has to doormat herself to any male Grundy, to the extent that she will wash her BIL's smalls.

We used to have some storylines about Lynda walking her dog eg when Brine wanted to re-route a footpath. We have also had some Lynda/Lillian encounters.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/10/2019 08:55

There used to be a big supermarket on the Borchester bypass. Oddly never referred to by name. Grin

No one in Ambridge ever gets anything delivered by Amazon or any other online retailer. In practice, that would be keeping the village post office going - people going in with parcels to return, acting as a collection point for parcels.

Thanks, everyone. Yes, I remember Lynda 'test driving' a few dogs. Got me thinking about Scruff and the Resurgam stone now!

And, yes, it does sound ominously like Alf is going to become a (semi?) permanent fixture, doesn't it Shock

Oh dear.....

5000FlapjacksofJillArcher · 28/10/2019 09:52

Did anyone else snort when Shula said, "I'm finding it hard to think about myself"?

The entire nation snorted, WheresThatCat.

C8H10N4O2 · 28/10/2019 10:16

If Alf & Joy become permanent speaking characters I think I am out...

I assumed Alf was introduced to be around for Talk Like a Pirate Day. I think whoever used to own character design/management must have left the scriptwriting team long ago. All it needs is someone to comment on his pork pie hat.

Freddie was obnoxious in that episode. Whiny entitled brat.

R4 · 28/10/2019 10:28

Whiny entitled brat.
I thought that he was enjoying being a wind-up merchant. Can't ever imagine him having bantz like that with Lizzie.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 28/10/2019 10:30

I didn't perceive the scene with Freddie like that at all Hmm

I rather enjoyed his gentle teasing of Shula!

And, you must admit, she does ask for it Grin

MardyLardy · 28/10/2019 10:32

God I have only come here to Kian because I wanted to say what the fuck Alf and Joy? Shitter than shit awfully drawn characters joe engaged in Allo Allo style antics.
I think this might mark the end to my 29yeara if listening.
Oh and it really won’t be drawing in any new listeners that’s for sure.

MardyLardy · 28/10/2019 10:32

Wtf all my anger ruined by autocorrect!

birdsdestiny · 28/10/2019 10:46

I didn't notice Mardy, too busy wincing at my own auto correct spelling errors.

MardyLardy · 28/10/2019 10:48

😂 could be worse we could have just written or edited shit scripts!

willywillywillywilly · 28/10/2019 11:02

Pants is 100% a word for trousers where I live (North East England)

willywillywillywilly · 28/10/2019 11:03

..although that is of no relevance to The Archers Grin

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 28/10/2019 11:08

Same here in the North West, willyx4.

But I suspect Clarrie was talking about underpants Confused

SurpriseSparDay · 28/10/2019 11:46

It really is a stretch to believe even Clarrie would, within a few days, be doing Alf’s personal laundry. Reasonable to round up all the household bedlinen once a week, without distinction between relative levels of welcome-ness in Grange Farm occupants, completely unreasonable that for anything else she (or Eddie Hmm) wouldn’t just point him in the direction of the washing machine.

Motoko · 28/10/2019 11:47

I took it that Clarrie was talking about his underwear.

I also heard the teasing in Freddie's tone with Shula, he was definitely winding her up, not whining.
