Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Joy's best friend or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks for all the input on title suggestions. I'd missed the significance of 111, but @R4 and DDD, our resident numerologist, were right on to it. Strongly tempted by Bore's suggestion but couldn't resist the chance to mention my favourite ever Archers character, Nelson Gabriel. Have not managed to incorporate a cricket reference, so you'll have to read up on that for yourselves. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nelson_(cricket)

I wonder if this thread will last till Joe's funeral.

I doubt we're going to get a storyline like that quite yet. It's not that long since they shipped Christine off to the Laurels after Hilda ambushed her.

UnholyStramash · 12/11/2019 16:39

I realise now I didn’t listen with great attention to CMR and his whinging- I think this is me subconsciously just losing interest as he’s so unlikeable. I might need to listen again. Urgh! I also cannot be bothered with him and Lizzie getting über-friendly so don’t hear her much either.

Back to Lilian, if the BBC wants draaama they’d have to have Lill coming off a horse at speed, or falling into the cellar at the Bull. This would mean spaffing their budget on paramedics, air ambulance, scenes at the hospital. Justin, Jenny, and Jolene and Kenton would have lots of ‘alarmed’ lines. Off duty Harrison having to organise people. Possibly also Adam could be brought in to not sound languid or tired for a change. Sadly, no joe Grundy to say ‘Oh Lilian Bellamy, what have you done to yourself now?’ And if any of this turns up TA we’ll know at least the intern reads MN. Right, I’m going to be brave and listen to last night again.

UnholyStramash · 12/11/2019 16:41

True, @EBearhug, I’d forgotten about Christine. I think the Ed has too.

Limer · 12/11/2019 16:45

What will Hilda's kittens be called?

I'm hoping for a nod to current events - Boris, Jeremy, Jo, Nicola and Nigel Furrage Grin

UnholyStramash · 12/11/2019 17:01

And pyjamas in pairs? Tut, my grandma insisted they came in suits not pairs. Smile . I think Jill and Leonard should decamp to his place. That way there’ll be no 60 yr old men dictating where they sleep - much more relaxing for them.

If the kittens are being sold, does it matter if Peggy names them? I don’t know the kitten-naming protocol though.

MissBarbary · 12/11/2019 17:49

New occupants of cereal cupboard:-

Tom and Gnasher
Hannah
Shula's art project
Peggy's conservation project.

In addition of course to long term occupants(Carole, Dr Locke, Christine, the people who bought Home Farm, Lewis et al)

LillianGish · 12/11/2019 17:53

It's not that long since they shipped Christine off to the Laurels after Hilda ambushed her. Not that long ago and yet I had entirely forgotten about Aunty Cardboard. Didn't Heatherpet have a similar fall which was the reason she was moving to Brookfield when she threw in the towel (at Trowell)? I think Jill's fall is intended to bring her even closer to Leonard. What's happened to Carol by the way - I don't remember her leaving. Is she stuck in the cereal cupboard at Glebe Cottage?

Beveren · 12/11/2019 17:57

Back to Lilian, if the BBC wants draaama they’d have to have Lill coming off a horse at speed, or falling into the cellar at the Bull. This would mean spaffing their budget on paramedics, air ambulance, scenes at the hospital.

Naah, they'd have some sound effects and Lill screaming, possibly some reactive yelping from anyone who's with her or finds her, then the next thing we'd hear is Justin phoning Piggoi from the hospital to tell her all about the air ambulance, paramedics, hospital etc.

Motoko · 12/11/2019 18:00

Never heard of a suit of pyjamas! It's always been a pair as far as I was aware.

Kittens names tend to be changed by the new "owners". When we got Nibbler and Pixel, they'd had different names, one of them being Gizmo. And when we had kittens to find homes for, we know that their new owners changed the names we had given them.
We'd only given them names, so we knew which ones we were talking about. One of the kittens which we kept, got her temporary name via someone on Twitter, when DH posted a picture of her, shortly after she was born. She was the size of a mouse, and had markings like a Fresian cow, and this person called her Mousecow, and it stuck! She has quite a lot of fans on Twitter, as she's grown up to be a very pretty cat, so DH has to keep posting photos of her. I've told him he should set up an account just for her.

How old are Hilda's kittens now, is it 2 weeks, or 3?

NewName73 · 12/11/2019 18:26

Are we supposed to infer from last night's episode that Jill and Leonard have not yet spent a night together.

I know they are old, but they've been going out together for ages ... I'd have taken it as given by now?

Fink · 12/11/2019 19:28

I was more surprised that Jill had seemingly forgotten her beloved husband's name. She kept on referring to 'him' and 'our anniversary' but didn't mention him by name once. Even Leonard's wife got a name check (I can't remember what it was, but that's by the by).

I'm not surprised they're not sleeping together, although I thought she had once stayed over at his place. I might be wrong. It would strike me as more unusual if a regular churchgoer who had been married for over 50 years then widowed for 9 didn't think very carefully before starting a new sexual relationship.

EBearhug · 13/11/2019 09:50

Are we supposed to infer from last night's episode that Jill and Leonard have not yet spent a night together.

I thought ages ago there was a load of fuss about Jill staying over at Leonard's, when she's a grown woman, it's in Borchester, not Outer Mongolia, and she was in the spare room anyway. It seems odd that it appears to have been a one-off.

Also, it's only Borchester, and if Leonard can't drive that far in the dark at this time of year, he probably shouldn't be driving at all. On dingy days, you need lights on whatever the time of day.

ppeatfruit · 13/11/2019 11:10

I wonder if jacob and Kate will stay together, interesting how the SWs have changed him into a human bean. Though he's more likely to get his heart broken unless they change HER character too.

MereDintofPandiculation · 13/11/2019 13:43

if Leonard can't drive that far in the dark at this time of year, he probably shouldn't be driving at all. It most likely isn't about not having good eyesight normally, it's likely to be being more affected by glare, and that isn't a problem when you have lights on during gloomy days. So he'd be perfectly safe driving during daylight hours, even with lights. And quite likely safe driving in at night, just finding it more tiring than most people, therefore wanting to do it only for very short distances, or well lit roads where the headlights aren't quite so dazzling.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 13/11/2019 16:14

Leonard was not the one who didn't want him to drive six miles after dark, it was Jill who didn't. I'm sure he is perfectly able to, because he has driven home every time he has visited Brookfield before, and some of those will have been after dark if he came to supper. He simply makes her feel safer/less hassled than her son and daughter-in-law do, and she was feeling a bit fragile and shocky.

birdsdestiny · 13/11/2019 17:26

Yes Jill wanted Leonard to stay because she was feeling wobbly not really because of concern for him.
Or she might have just fancied a shag and needed to make up a reason because David is sooo weirdGrin

MikeUniformMike · 13/11/2019 17:41

If Jakob is a human bean, does than mean Kate will eat him alive?

MissBarbary · 13/11/2019 20:08

Peggy really is quite annoying.

MikeUniformMike · 13/11/2019 20:22

Peggy is wonderful. The Newmarket move for Chris and Alice would be good, unless it is Newmarket, Borsetshire.

HatingTheBigShow · 13/11/2019 21:58

Chris is such a yokel with all his excuses as to why he can't leave Ambridge and move to the other side of the world, oops I mean Newmarket. He needs to stay for his niece and nephew (who live with extended family anyway). Come on! Poor Alice desperately needs a new job and excitement away from all the womb watchers.

MissBarbary · 13/11/2019 22:22

Would anyone miss Chris and Alice if they moved?

Apart from the brief flurry of excitement when Alice was being signposted as an alcoholic they don't do anything.

Abraid2 · 13/11/2019 22:33

I am very much younger than Leonard and driving on dark country roads with potholes with the glare of some cars’ excessively over-bright lights really hurts my eyes, despite my expensive anti-glare prescription glasses. I used to do a lot of driving at night and am glad it’s not necessary as much now. I wouldn’t want my 81-year old mother doing it.

ADarkandStormyKnight · 13/11/2019 23:03

What was all that about Anisha's hisband not being anything to look at? Apart from showing Kate, Christopher and Alice up as bitchy.

Motoko · 14/11/2019 00:08

Looks like our hypothesis about Rochelle being estranged might be correct. Joy quickly diverted the conversation away when Brian mentioned her visit. She wouldn't be at Peggy's do if Rochelle was coming down. Is she going to say the kids were too poorly (chicken pox?) to travel?

SurpriseSparDay · 14/11/2019 07:15

Estranged, maybe. But people have been querying Joy’s choice of new residence, so far from home in a place she has no particular reason to be ...

Perhaps Rochelle and her children have all ... ceased to be, in traumatic circumstances, and Joy, suffering from PTSD, is unable to process or accept the fact. Perhaps (since we’ve done therapists and a psychiatrist probably wouldn’t offer such hand-holding) her email was from a concerned friend or more distant relative, trying to keep her feet on the ground.

It would be unexpectedly satisfying if Joy’s random arrival in Ambridge had a reason.

(My phone has had the utter cheek to underline ‘Ambridge’ in red. I’ve a good mind to drop it down the nearest drain. Halloween Angry)
