Archers Many thanks to @LilianGish for the title and to @NotdeadyetBOING for being the last threadstarter. Further thanks due to @PseudoBadger for kicking of this long, long series of Archers threads and to @DadDadDad for being our resident statistician and keeping the ball rolling when Pseudo stepped back a bit.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed.

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers I wonder where Brian and Jennifer will end up. I was very taken with the idea on the last thread that the mysterious Gills won't last very long and the house will be sold back to the Aldridges at a knockdown price.

Pip has the same effect on me as Ben's whistle has on Toby.

And it seems to me that Toby is actually getting sick of Pip aswell.

BertrandRussell · 16/01/2019 20:07

Tonight was the first time for ages i’ve Been on Pip’s side. Glad that Toby appears to be rejecting his personality transplant and is reverting to arse.

DadDadDad · 16/01/2019 20:54

What on earth was that whistle storyline all about? Was it filler material knocked up by some student on work experience? Confused I suppose it was meant to show an immature side to Toby, but it just seemed a bit odd.

FlakefleetforChristmasnumber1 · 16/01/2019 21:23

Totally delurking to say am watching brexit:The uncivil war, and there's Kirsty running the focus groups! Amazing how well you know the voices and just "know" instantly innit.

As you were.

MikeUniformMike · 16/01/2019 21:27

The TA actors often turn up in other things. I believe that sometimes they even appear in EE and Corrie.

cheminotte · 16/01/2019 21:31

What channel is / was that on Flakefeet ?

JessieMcJessie · 16/01/2019 21:37

Channel 4. I noticed her too!

UniversalAunt · 16/01/2019 22:01

Even apart from serious work use (I write software, need to use servers in the US all the time), not having broadband would be really annoying.

So you have a business line rather than a residential line to improve the level of service, call out time for repair and compensation if service outage extended?

SaturdayNext · 17/01/2019 00:37

I can still remember debating with myself for days about whether to spend 8/6 (42.5p) on a record. Something by Herman's Hermits, IIRC.

SaturdayNext · 17/01/2019 00:38

If any sibling of mine had demanded to know why I wasn't in college the way Pip did of Ben, I'd have told them to sod off and that it was none of their business. Ben was amazingly forbearing.

QuaterMiss · 17/01/2019 06:23

Goodness, Saturday - you've taken me right back to an all too brief, pre-sibling era of childhood heavenliness. I can hear There's a kind of hush all over the world in my head - but I'm not sure if it's the Herman's Hermits original or the later Carpenters version.

42.5p rings a bell - but I must have paid more for my first record purchase - Michael Jackson's Rockin' Robin - several years later.

Pretty sure I remember my father paying for petrol with guineas ...

stilllearnin · 17/01/2019 08:08

There was once info about TA actors day jobs because it doesn’t pay well. From memory Neil is a GP and Susan is an academic.

Anyway- all this Toby helping out is really grating. It’s called parenting when it’s your own child. Not helping out!

R4 · 17/01/2019 08:18

It's Robert Snell who was the GP (?think he's retired now?).

MikeUniformMike · 17/01/2019 08:46

Yes, Robert Snell was a GP. Roy Tucker has a pub.

JessieMcJessie · 17/01/2019 08:51

Yes that’s Right, Robert Snell actor is/was a GP. I like to think that he would have a bedside manner just like patient, kind, sensible Robert! And Susan is played by Dr Charlotte Martin (psychology I think).

MereDintofPandiculation · 17/01/2019 11:13

I can still remember debating with myself for days about whether to spend 8/6 (42.5p) on a record. Something by Herman's Hermits, IIRC. My first ever record purchase was "You were made for me" by HH. Appalling taste I had in those days!

R4 · 17/01/2019 11:22

Freddie and the Dreamers? Please tell me you didn't do the dance routine.

ppeatfruit · 17/01/2019 12:04

I liked yesterday's ep.: a bit of lightheartedness, sibling rivalry. realistic family life. Pip stood up for Ben against Toby . Plus Kirsty and Phil told the truth, sweet.

I thought they were DTD in the hide for a moment.

Ref. pre dec. prices; I remember thinking how expensive a pair of shoes were at 19\11d (one pound) A weeks' worth of greengroceries, for a family of 5, was approx 15 shillings, 75p. at the time.

grumiosmum · 17/01/2019 13:14

Not quite old enough to remember pre-decimilisation prices, but I do remember my Mum buying me a lovely pair of red plastic cork wedges from Woolworth's for 99p. Which the dog chewed to bits. I was devastated.

SaturdayNext · 17/01/2019 13:22

QuaterMiss, I think "There's a kind of hush" was the record in question! And I played it on a portable Dansette ...

5000FingersofDrT · 17/01/2019 13:26

Apparently the actress who plays Lily was due to be Bethany Platt in Coronation St a few years ago but she, ahem, massaged her age downwards a bit in order to get closer to the age of her character (she was in her 20s, character was meant to be a teen) so they relieved her of the role before she'd even started playing it.

However, stardom came knocking shortly afterwards in the form of the Archers job.

I'd like to hear Lily doing a Weatherfield accent, though.

MikeUniformMike · 17/01/2019 13:36

Isn't the Lily and CallMeRuss flat in Wetherfield?

stilllearnin · 17/01/2019 16:29

Thanks for the corrections people!

I love talking about the archers. My daughter hates it so mum and I pretend we’re talking about real people we know. Suddenly my dd will chip in ‘wait! This is the flipping archers isn’t it?’ Grin

5000FingersofDrT · 17/01/2019 16:44

Mike, we'll know for sure if she mentions popping into Roy's Rolls for a brew and a bacon buttie Wink

MikeUniformMike · 17/01/2019 18:58

I doubt that they're down the Rovers every night. Can't see CallMeCocklodger tucking into hotpot.
