Archers Thanks to LilG for the title, and DDD for starting the last thread and the tradition of the thread starter nominating the next thread starter Grin

Lurkers are always welcome to unlurk and join in, including asking questions of the many very knowledgeable posters with a long Archers-listening history.

Don't post spoilers based on forthcoming plot synopses that you've read, there's another thread for that (and we'd love to see you over there). Once an episode has aired then it's fair game. Archers

Exactly what I thought, Bert.

Surely that line was written by a Mumsnetter!

InkySplatter · 04/11/2018 20:04

After weeks of waning patience with Elizabeth has officially been lost.

No rewards will be issued upon the discovery of it.

InkySplatter · 04/11/2018 20:06

Thanks for the HWMNBN clarification DDD I was wondering.

It would have been rather brilliant if various people were discussing but not naming different people.

Fink · 04/11/2018 20:12

I'd give a sort of half-boop to Ruth finally asking herself 'I wonder how Ben feels', but only a half because 16 years is a hell of a long time to start to develop any empathy for one's own child!

R4 · 04/11/2018 20:24

Ruth's wondering only extended as far as imposing a solution, which David had to execute. It doesn't seem to involve any effort on her part.
It also didn't involve any discussion with Ben about how he felt about anything, he had no say in the solution.

Fink · 04/11/2018 20:27

No, but, you know, baby steps ... little by little. She deserves a micro-boop at least for beginning the journey towards waking up to the fact that Ben exists.

Miscible · 04/11/2018 21:15

I also am losing patience with Elizabeth in relation to the way she has to wrench everything around to how it relates to "poor Freddie" - e.g her reaction to Ben being in trouble was complete lack of interest other than to comment that Ben is so lucky having a father to tell him off. Surely at some point she needs to realise that Freddie isn't really a poor little orphan, but the sole author of his own misfortunes.

*Yes, another welcome tilly! You do understand that it's compulsory to have read the previous 93 threads by the end of your first weekend .8

Thank you for the welcomes, I will try and attack the homework, if I fail I'll write a note from my Mum, as I used to do many moons ago!
I first listened to it in the early 70s, radio was still black and white, I recall Syd Perk's first wife at the Bull and I think Dan Archer was still alive. At a jumble sale I bought 3 books about the Archers, starting in WW1, very interesting, what a little minx Elizabeth used to be in her day!

QuaterMiss · 04/11/2018 21:49

Yes to the Horrobin Police House fire.

Pseudo's rule. Most people hated him. (I found his ability to reveal the dark hypocrisy of Ambridge rather thrilling.)

No - Adam sounded like that even before the vicious assault. Grin Arguably he achieved peak animation while comatose in hospital. (But I like his non-standard delivery.)

Ah, tilly ... I sometimes drop Polly Perks into conversation - and am met with deafening silence. Still miss her. Sad

MereDintofPandiculation · 04/11/2018 22:24

Not all of us are so pedantic about the finer details of martial arts Sorry tilly, I didn't realise you were new. I had a smile on my face when I said it but it didn't come over in the post (and I haven't got the hang of the smileys).

(But the difference between judo and karate isn't really a "finer detail" more like the difference between hockey and lacrosse. A finer detail would be Shukokai vs Go Kan Ryu)

LassWiADelicateAir · 04/11/2018 22:48

Is it judo or karate? I wasn't paying attention.

Eastpoint · 04/11/2018 22:52

I miss Polly Perks too, I think of her as being rather lovely. No word of Lucy now since Sid died.

Betty Tucker died while I lived abroad in the days before broadband. My mother didn’t send me tapes of omnibuses.

witchmountain · 04/11/2018 22:57

Google images suggests that karate is all kicking and punching, whereas judo consists entirely of throwing each other to the ground by means of a kind of two-person cartwheel. Is that correct?

OP posts:
Eastpoint · 04/11/2018 22:57

I thought I’d remind myself of Betty Tucker’s sad demise & found this very old thread in Culture Vultures Betty Tucker’s death

Eastpoint · 04/11/2018 22:58

Yes Witch you’re right. It is karate in the village hall, not judo.

witchmountain · 04/11/2018 23:00

I remember Darryl, just not that it is he who must not be named. I thought he was quite an interesting character.

OP posts:
Theyprobablywill · 04/11/2018 23:17

Witch, you have to make noises. It is important to make noises.

witchmountain · 04/11/2018 23:21

For which one? If someone cartwheels me to the ground I will probably make a noise.

OP posts:
Theyprobablywill · 04/11/2018 23:37

Both, for karate it is a sort of 'hiyahh', phlegm clearing noise, judo is more of a 'umphhh' just been winded noise.

witchmountain · 04/11/2018 23:44

What if I’m the one doing the winding? Is a cackle acceptable?

OP posts:
Theyprobablywill · 04/11/2018 23:44

No. Most definitely not.

birdsdestiny · 05/11/2018 06:31

You could probably do it singing opera in one of Lee's classes, he seems to know very little about karate ( and my knowledge is only based on a year watching ds before he threw in the towel) I suspect this will end badly for Helen.

witchmountain · 05/11/2018 08:46

Me singing opera would probably be enough to fell most opponents.

Why do you think it will end badly for Helen?

OP posts:
Theyprobablywill · 05/11/2018 09:42

It always does. In Helen's very short relationship history; Greg, bullet to the brain, some random from Helen's ' my little shop' stalked then she ran over Mike and made poor Tommy take the blame, Australian barman, impregnated Greg's daughter, Rob, mauve dress.

LillianGish · 05/11/2018 09:51

I love that summary of Helen's relationship history Grin
