And there’s some rubbish about an ex-stripper policeman?

I assume they got Freddie's results by email or they'd have seen Lily there. They were talking about them in the car on the way to court.

WoodenCat · 21/08/2018 11:40

Poor Lily. Her mother treats her like a partner not a child. All that stuff about “we have to talk about Freddy” “we have to look after him”. And then Russ treats her like an equal (in her mind) not a student too. She needs someone in a parent type role to be a parent to her.

As for Ruth and her 30% rule, isn’t that somewhat basic? Where do their lamb sales go to now??

NotdeadyetBOING · 21/08/2018 15:15

Was it Hannah that told someone to stop behaving 'like an old woman'. That 'insult' has bothered me for decades so really shocked to hear a young woman use it. Seriously?!

Guienne · 21/08/2018 15:19

Remind me - Elizabeth didn’t go to university herself, did she? So (outside the world of drama plotting - and despite the stately home bolstering) she might well be anywhere from intimidated to simply completely ignorant of the current application/acceptance process.

Lizzie's the sort of parent who would have interrogated the children's teachers about this and had long discussions about which university to go for, which offers were best, etc etc. It's difficult to believe she would have totally opted out.

witchmountain · 21/08/2018 15:44

I loved the seeds talk and the sheep, especially the one that was discarded for “being a bad mother last time” - both true to life and the SW’s chance for a joke, I thought.

witchmountain · 21/08/2018 15:48

How interesting, I had always sort of assumed without thinking about it that matriculating involved completing something, like graduation, but the dictionary tells me it is, in fact, enrolment or admission. I suppose I’d read it in context and mixed up the end of the previous bit of education with the beginning of the next.

DeusEx · 21/08/2018 16:28

I had always sort of assumed without thinking about it that matriculating involved completing something, like graduation

It does usually involve completing a rather silly ceremony :)

Gruach · 21/08/2018 17:03

Indeed ...

I hadn’t realised it wasn’t called the same thing everywhere. Blush I did the same thing elsewhere more recently; it was still mainly a matter of queuing, handing over evidence of qualifications and swearing by all that’s holy that someone will be paying your fees pdq.

(The first one does feel like the century before last some days ... And I flirted more the second time around ...)

chemenger · 21/08/2018 17:24

Where I was matriculation involved standing in queues for hours then just as you lost the will to live having your ID picture taken.

wurzelburga · 21/08/2018 17:32

Manchester guarantee accommodation for all undergraduates provided they apply by end August. So Lily is running out of time.

I seem to remember a German revision session with Freddy a few months ago. Find it difficult to believe she would have got an A even at GCSE!

LassWiADelicateAir · 21/08/2018 17:35

Matriculation just means enrolling.

Lily would have to apply separately for student accommodation if she wanted to be in university halls or flats. I can't believe she and Lizzie haven't had a conversation about that , given Lizzie will be paying for it.

LassWiADelicateAir · 21/08/2018 17:41

I asked mine if they had applied for accommodation if it didn't come with the offer but I didn't check they were telling me the truth

Weren't you paying for the accomodation? Even if you didn't, Lizzie would be. The offer of a place isn't ever going to include free accommodation.

cheminotte · 21/08/2018 17:47

Notdeadyet - totally agree with you. My (older, female) boss used it recently about a (male) colleague and my eyebrows may have raised slightly.

campion · 21/08/2018 17:56

I noticed it too Notdeadyet

I guess it fits with Hannah's gobby and rather aggressive persona. She doesn't seem to be winning too many friends so far.

birdsdestiny · 21/08/2018 18:38

Is somebody going to predict what Hannah's secret is? She must have one, to explain this slightly odd behaviour.

D0do · 21/08/2018 19:17

Now that's the kind of closing line for which I listen to The Archers! Grin

prettywhiteguitar · 21/08/2018 19:19

Haaaaahaaa ! Helen your cheese is bland 😭😭😭😭

Gruach · 21/08/2018 19:52

Glorious!

Mootsie · 21/08/2018 20:42

Has Henry at last got a real seven year old boy's voice or am I imagining things?

R4 · 21/08/2018 21:07

How has Helen gone from 'finalist in the Food and Farming awards' to 'bland and delisted' in a few months?Confused

MikeUniformMike · 21/08/2018 21:09

It's the milk they're buying in.

BertrandRussell · 21/08/2018 21:19

I simply do not believe that Iain would have done it like that. He would have discussed the problem after the first batch he thought was substandard. And he would not have given her that news over lunch. It's so ridiculous and unprofessional.

Gruach · 21/08/2018 21:24

Yes! The bought milk.

So are we about to see a painful (for Tom) reversion at Bridge Farm?

Peartree17 · 21/08/2018 21:55

Wouldn't Helen taste each batch of her own cheese though and notice a difference?

Realism aside, it was a funny scene. "it's not earning its place on the cheese-board at Grey Gables.'

TheNorthernTights · 21/08/2018 22:02

Long time Listener, relatively recent lurking reader here - loving your work!

And I've been lured out of lurking by the need to ask, re Lexi ....... Does anyone else think that maybe, actually, the last IVF attempt didn't fail, and she's gone home because now she's pregnant she can't actually face handing over the baby? (I stand to be corrected if I've missed summat that confirms definitely it didn't work, I often half listen)
