And there’s some rubbish about an ex-stripper policeman?

I think Knob's father carried more responsibility for his character defects than his mother.

R4 · 17/08/2018 10:51

How long does 'death of father' count as a mitigating factor?

Tragic death, may I remind you. It was all brought back by the death of Topper. He has untreated PTSD, m'lud.

If Lily has A*AA does that mean she is going to study Unspecified Subject at the University of Unspecified? I'm not holding my breath.

Gruach · 17/08/2018 10:56

If Lily has AAA does that mean she is going to study Unspecified Subject at the University of Unspecified? I'm not holding my breath.*

I typed almost exactly this last night - but felt so miserable at the prospect that I deleted the post. It’s crap isn’t it? Surely they can’t put us through three years of “Lily’s doing so well at Anonymous Uni ...”?

Must say I felt sorry for her yesterday. Imagine 18 years of preparation - and the day of triumph completely smashed to pieces. Partly by your own idiocy admittedly - but still ...

Gruach · 17/08/2018 11:02

Also, never mind ‘Asian’ weddings (I’m quoting) - at the moment Elizabeth should be pushing hard to make LL a heritage destination for the American wedding market. So Freddie’s defence team can stress the devastation to his future livelihood if he receives a conviction.

BertrandRussell · 17/08/2018 11:13

"I think Knob's father carried more responsibility for his character defects than his mother."

That can't be true-it's always a woman's fault.

choccyp1g · 17/08/2018 11:13

Lily suddenly noticed that Freddie is the one to inherit LL.
Has Russ recently found out this disturbing fact? I assumed he was just after her young body rather than her inheritance.

R4 · 17/08/2018 11:15

Elizabeth is a pretty rubbish mother. She goes from one extreme to another. I hate it when she does her martyr stuff - no, you're not the first single parent, and the responsibilities of LL are cushy compared to life in Meadow Rise. I hate it even more when she puts on her professional 'I am being reasonable' voice and talks at her DC. She has always treated them as if they give her anxiety instead of pleasure. She probably thinks of them in the same way as LL: something to be managed.

Did you notice how pleased Freddie was to see Lily yesterday. He genuinely gushed. He hugged her. She didn't get anything like that from Lizzie.

Guienne · 17/08/2018 11:28

I doubt that a Crown Court judge would be too impressed by mitigation based on Topper's death. It doesn't exactly explain supplying to Noli, for instance.

BikingBeatrix · 17/08/2018 11:48

Alcina, l believe Al’s sister was talked of briefly around the time Jim came to Ambridge - she was discussed by Shula and Al because Jim had broken his leg and she was unable to take in Jim which meant Shula got landed with the old codger. I suppose some of us even felt sorry for Shula. I don’t think Fiona was ever voiced.

BikingBeatrix · 17/08/2018 11:54

I imagine Kenton had to fill in a form and attend an I terview when he joined the navy. Not sure exam grades matters for basic entry. Also not sure if it was the Wueen’s navee or merchant, but think the latter.

BikingBeatrix · 17/08/2018 11:55

That would be interview obviously.

LassWiADelicateAir · 17/08/2018 16:16

BTW - why was Usha needing thanks? I thought she’d passed the case to someone else? (I also didn’t think she did crime ...)

One of the many implausible plot lines is that a family like the Pargetters use the local one woman general practioner solicitor. They don't. Families like the Aldridges and the Pargetters use discreet and expensive private client firms not located any where near Ambridge and which the normal village families can't afford.

The type of firm people like Lizzie uses doesn't do criminal work but they will hold her hand and introduce her to a trusted criminal firm.

LassWiADelicateAir · 17/08/2018 16:17

That would be interview obviously

That is one mystery cleared up but what about "Wueen’s navee:?

Gruach · 17/08/2018 16:22

They don't.

Of course they don’t.Grin I assume the SWs feel obliged to mention the only lawyer in the village, no matter how implausible. (Either because they don’t know any better or because they think the listeners don’t.)

Gruach · 17/08/2018 16:24

Although - point of order - I thought Usha was a partner in Borchester. Did I miss another episode sometime?Confused

C8H10N4O2 · 17/08/2018 16:40

I thought Usha was a partner in Borchester.

So did I. I thought she joined with a big Borchester practice a while back - I have vague memories of discussions about them buying the Mark/Usha practice. I am also wondering if I have False Memory Syndrome Grin

D0do · 17/08/2018 17:59

Mark Hebden worked for a law firm in Birmingham for a time but found the commuting a trial, so set up a practice of his own in Borchester. He then advertised for a partner and got Usha. After Mark's death Usha carried on on her own for a time but then sold the practice to Jefferson Crabtree, whose main office is in Felpersham, with one of the sale terms being that she got a partnership in JC. She works mostly in Borchester but goes to Felpersham sometimes.

Helen's solicitor, whose name escapes me, was a JC partner/associate, IIRC, introduced by Usha.

wurzelburga · 17/08/2018 18:02

I think any family in this situation would sell their granny to engage a top criminal practice to spare their 18 year old from the horrors of a young offenders unit.
A wealthy family like the Pargetters would never have contemplated using Usha, even for the magistrates hearing - and especially not if they had thought there was any chance of getting the case dealt with by a fine/community service order at this stage.

JessieMcJessie · 17/08/2018 18:05

I think it’s Felpersham Usha works in.

DadDadDad · 17/08/2018 18:31

LassWiADelicateAir

^Wueen's navee* must be Royal Navy. Totally obvs. Hmm

DadDadDad · 17/08/2018 18:32

bleugh, italics fail

D0do · 17/08/2018 18:57

I'm sure you're right, Jessie, I have a dim memory of something a few years ago about moving to Felpersham. But either way, Elizabeth didn't go to a one-man band general practitioner for advice, and even if Usha did hand her on to a specialist, she probably went along to the court for moral support. She and Elizabeth are very chummy when the SWs remember.

MissVanjie · 17/08/2018 19:12

Just catching up and UGH JILL

If she’d minded her own biz and just gone ‘there there dear i’m always here for you any time’ like a normal loving parent in the first place she wouldn’t be feeling like such a bag of dicks for having had a go at shula

Honestly do none of these people accept responsibility for their own actions?

Gruach · 17/08/2018 19:27

Was that the dullest soap wedding in history?

Hardly augurs well for the next 70 years ...

DadDadDad · 17/08/2018 19:29

Finally, Harrison has solved a crime (well, “crime”)! And with logic as good as Sherlock: consider the curious case of the gossip that didn't gossip.
