I really enjoyed Serial and the one with Catherine Keener (can't remember what it was called Blush)

Anything new - in the last year or so?

I love Pod Save America and Lovett or Leaveit, both american political podcasts by Obama's ex-speechwriters. So funny. Also love This American Life and I have found a few other long form story podcasts like that, RadioLab is great, so is Mystery Show by Starlee Kine (she is hilarious). The London Review of Books is also good and I also like The High Low

Silly question, but how do you listen to podcasts? I presume on a smart phone, but how exactly?

The easiest way is to download an app onto your phone. I use one called Podcast Republic, but I assume that they all work in pretty much the same way.
You select either "podcast" or "downloads" or "episodes"

If you go to "podcast" and then the plus icon you can add a podcast to your subscription list. You can either click on "browse" and look through popular podcasts or click on "search" if you know the name of the podcast that you want to listen to.

Once you've subscribed to a few different podcasts then you need to download some episodes so that you can listen offline (no need to download if you only ever listen when you have wifi).

click on one of the podcasts that you've subscribed to and scroll through the episodes. Click on "download" for the ones that you are interested in.

When you are ready to listen, click on "downloads" instead of "podcasts".

The app takes up some space on your phone, but not a ridiculously big amount. The episodes only take up space when they are downloaded. Just remember to delete each episode as you've listened to it.

Hope that helps.

Thanks cariadlet. I haven't got any space on my phone at the moment, so maybe it's an idea for the future.

I like 'is it just me' with Jo Elvin, former editor of Glamour. It's very light magazine style chatting and interviews but is easy listening

Esther Perel "Where should we begin?", real couple's counselling sessions by a master therapist. If you're curious about other people's relationships or how couples counselling works, this is fascinating.

True crime garage, just found this last night well worth a listen

BarbaraofSevillle · 06/02/2018 15:49

Scummy Mummies. It's like a spoken word version of Mumsnet.

I use Antennapod to listen to most of my podcasts, downloads happen automatically and it also deletes automatically after I have listed. I also manually download some Radio 4 shows that I like, that I can't seem to find as podcasts, such as the Unbelieveable Truth.

falang · 06/02/2018 18:59

At the recommendation of someone on this post I have just listened to a few episodes of Casefile True Crime. The Peter Weinberger episode was so gripping I drove the long way home so I could hear it all. Thanks to whoever suggested it.

I'm also enjoying Where should we begin frayedbuspass

Thought it would be quicker for me to take a screen shot 😀

Do you think we could move this- to radio addicts maybe?- so it doesn’t disappear? There are too many recs to download them all at once.

YetAnotherHelenMumsnet · 06/02/2018 19:41

Hi there,
We think the idea of moving this to Radio Addicts is a good one, so we'll get onto that straightaway. Very keen to have a look, even if Dirty John did give me Actual Nightmares...

Autumnchill · 06/02/2018 19:59

I,listened to Dirty John whilst painting my garden fence! Turned a boring chore into a really great afternoon!

YorkshireFatRascal · 06/02/2018 20:51

If you are are interested in history try The British History Podcast. It is a very detailed chronological history of Britain- 267 episodes so far and only up to AEthelflaed (Alfred the Great's daughter) The presenter has a very engaging and relaxed style.
I also second the recommendations for Real Crime Pofile (especially the episodes relating to O J Simpson) though some episodes are a bit waffely and You Must Remember This.

I saw this article and thought of you lot Grin
27 podcasts you need to start listening to

Whyarethebestnamestaken · 08/02/2018 23:27

I am new to podcasts but are there any that help you go to sleep?

BarbaraofSevillle · 09/02/2018 05:04

Autumnchill

You have News Quiz Extra on podcast? I couldn't find it when I looked for it (itunes podcasts via Antennapod app on android) so it is one of my few that I listen to on iplayer radio, but it's less convenient like that as it doesn't play them automatically and I listen in the car - you can have a 'play all' option but instead of playing the next downloaded podcast, it comes up with some random episode of Woman's Hour from 6 months ago.

Now I don't mind Woman's hour, but I'm not interested in all the features and there's just too much content to listen to them all, along with all the other stuff I'm subscribed to, mainly Radio 4 comedy.

Autumnchill · 09/02/2018 05:35

@BarbaraofSevillle just looked and News Quiz Extra is Number 12 on Comedy chart on Podcasts so it should come up when you search 😊

LuxuryMilk · 09/02/2018 07:02

Sleep with me is great for going to sleep too.
He's got a monotone voice and tells a rambly story so you can drift off easily. I also love how positive he is.

Deux · 10/02/2018 09:52

Like the PP who listened to Dirty John whilst painting her fence, I listened to them all last weekend when I was doing various housework/chores. It was fabulous.

I knew nothing of the story at all and wow, the ending.

sparklybiddlyboo · 11/02/2018 19:45

Some great ideas here.

I use overcast, it has an option where you can speed them up slightly. Not enough to notice but it seems to get rid of dead air

sparklybiddlyboo · 11/02/2018 19:46

Happaenstancemarmite yes they do play through the cars Bluetooth. Great for long journeys

DrRisotto · 11/02/2018 19:58

I use podcast addict which has an option to 'skip silences'. I tried it and I tried speeding them up but then wondered why I was rushing it and switched back Grin

HappenstanceMarmite · 12/02/2018 19:06

Thank you sparklybiddlyboo 😊
