I really enjoyed Serial and the one with Catherine Keener (can't remember what it was called Blush)

Anything new - in the last year or so?

Real Crime Profile is a good one if you like Serial. It’s real criminologists and psychologists talking about infamous murder cases in depth. It’s not tacky and explotative like some crime podcasts can be.

WTF with Marc Maron is a good one if you like interviews with interesting people. He chats to politicians, celebrities, artists etc and has a really relaxed interview style. He gets a lot of really personal, interesting stuff out of people.

Also like Adam Buxton, The Comedian’s Comedian (if you like stand up/comedy in general), and Freakanomics for general interesting topics.

Currently binging Short Cuts by Josie Long on Radio 4. Each is a half hour curation of the weird and wonderful bits of radio.

StripySocksAndDocs · 01/02/2018 16:20

I like The History Chicks. There's heaps of them to choose from (some follow on from another, but they usually reference that at the start).

Each episode focuses on a woman in history; covers a wide range of time and different countries. Each on interesting and informative.

I love Crime in Sports and Small Town Murder.
Very funny and well researched

lecossaise · 01/02/2018 17:24

Guys We Fucked - started as what it sounds like (2 comedians interviewing men they had slept with), but they now mainly interview other comedians or people with interesting stories about sex and feminist issues. Very sweary!

SingingSands · 01/02/2018 19:23

I enjoy Scummy Mummies. Often found giggling on the bus listening to them! I saw them live at a festival last summer and was a bit “fan-girl” about seeing them. Embarrassing when you’re a 39 year old mum of two BlushGrin

I also love “Ramblings” with Clare Balding. I love listening to people chatting about their passions whilst Clare describes the lovely views on their walks. I’ve laughed and sobbed listening to some people’s stories, and I always learn something interesting!

Invisibilia
RadioLab
ReplyAll (if you are a bit of an IT geek)
Startup
Untold: The Daniel Morgan Murder (if you enjoyed Serial)

DamnDeDoubtanceIsSpartacus · 01/02/2018 20:08

Welcome to Nightvale, all on Spotify. S'like the X Files and Twin peaks.

NancyFrank · 01/02/2018 20:35

Can I be a total technophobe and ask how you listen to podcasts? Do you download them through an app?

DrRisotto · 01/02/2018 20:37

Untold: the Daniel Morgan murder is one of the best podcasts out there IMO and I've listened to them all a lot.

Cheekyandfreaky · 01/02/2018 20:40

Would second ‘this American life’, ‘wtf’, ‘Adam buxton’, ‘s town’, ‘invisibilia’.

Would also recommend ‘2 dope queens’ of you like stand up.

Cheekyandfreaky · 01/02/2018 20:42

@NancyFrank i have an iPhone (I know) so there is a podcast app, but I also use ‘stitcher’ another podcast app. You can also listen on Soundcloud and Spotify I think.

AppleBlossomTimeNow · 01/02/2018 20:44

I like the High Low podcast with Pandora Sykes & Dolly Alderton - funny, interesting, topical & makes me feel like I've got my finger on the zeitgeist.

NancyFrank · 01/02/2018 20:47

Thanks @cheekyandfreaky I'll have a look

icebearforpresident · 01/02/2018 20:47

I’ve just discovered 99% invisible and I am obsessed. It’s about something differed every episode but basically how something we take for granted became that way. So I found myself engrossed in an episode the other day about the development of skid row in LA (it’s a proper neighbourhood, never knew that!) Then I was listening to an episode about a marketing campaign reebok ran in the run up to the ‘92 olympics. And how the compact style packaging for the pill was developed.

It sounds boring but every episode is fascinating. And the presenter, Roman Mars, has the most gorgeous voice i’ve ever heard.

For all the true crime buffs may I recommend Ear Hustle? It’s made inside San Quentin prison in California by prisoners and a volunteer artist and is the little stories of life inside. So there’s an episode on how you get your cell mate, another about prison tribes etc. It’s so well made and full of the most gorgeous music recorded around the prison.

PixelDust · 01/02/2018 20:50

Answer me this!
My Favourite Murder
Oh No Ross and Carrie

SometimesMaybe · 01/02/2018 20:53

Great idea for a thread, always looking for new podcasts.
Radio 4 Friday night comedy (News Quiz at the mo)

They Walk Amoung us (true crime)

History Hit (Dan Snow and often gives really interesting background to topical issues - North Korea, US elections, Catalan independence etc, it’s very good)

Slow Burn (it’s about Watergate - just started it and it’s good - especially given the parallels in the US at the moment).

Lots of other Radio 4 stuff

Thanks for all these new ones!

calmandbright · 01/02/2018 20:53

Another vote for casefile (my fav crime pod) and sword and scale. I loved Ron Johnson’s the butterfly effect - gripped start to finish. Beyond reasonable doubt is ace, as is locked up abroad. And up and vanished! But I think my fav has been Untold - the Daniel Morgan murder. Shocking levels of police corruption etc. Was mind blowing.

Sadik · 01/02/2018 20:57

The Tip Off is amazing - it's a British podcast about how big investigative journalism scoops happened told by the journalists concerned. One of the episodes is about the Panama papers stories being put together right from the earliest leaks.

rosybell · 01/02/2018 21:07

Great recommendations here!

I love Griefcast / Adam Buxton / Scummy mummies as well as true crime ones.

I'm currently listening to The Adoption which is really fascinating- following a real adoption. 10 mins episodes and v well done & heartbreaking.

AWhistlingWoman · 01/02/2018 21:08

At the moment I love,

Unladylike - a podcast about what happens when women break the rules
www.unladylike.co/podcast/

Strangers - amazing storytelling podcast

Seconds to 99% Invisible, I agree with everything icebear said, Slow Burn, Ear Hustle, Invisibilia, Radiolab and Reply All.

If you like a bit of true crime, I recommend Already Gone, Casefile and Southern Fried True Crime.

Knackerelli · 01/02/2018 21:11

The Beef and Dairy network, have only heard the ones where they ‘interview’ Eli. Hilarious and dark, very league of gentlemanesque.

Another vote for Adam Buxton

iMatter · 01/02/2018 21:17

Grace Dent - The Untold.

Absolutely love these.

CandyMelts · 01/02/2018 21:19

Casefile is my absolute favourite

My favourite murder, very different as it's about 60:40 random chat to murder ratio so takes a few episodes to get into what they're on about

My dad wrote a porno had me in stitches, need some other funny ones now

I love podcasts. Sleep podcasts banished my horrible night time anxiety when away from home.

CustardOmlet · 01/02/2018 21:20

Really need to get into podcasts, loving the suggestions. I’ve only listened to My dad wrote a porno (hilarious!), no such thing as a fish and infinite monkey cage. My DH puts A Plus on sometimes which is also very funny!
