I really enjoyed Serial and the one with Catherine Keener (can't remember what it was called Blush)

Anything new - in the last year or so?

Rocky, they might not all be in the Apple store. If you try a standalone app, you should be able to find them, or look for a podcast directory if you have the option to subscribe via url.

Anathemadevice1 · 03/02/2018 08:50

I use Podcast Addict. If you want to learn a little bit about all sorts of stuff listen to In Our Time there are hundreds of them. Also Soul Music and Kermode and Mayo's film reveiw.

HappenstanceMarmite · 03/02/2018 09:53

Dirty John is fantastic. I’m going to listen to it again.

They Walk Among Us.

I’ve only ever got podcasts through Apple. Do the others mentioned here play through an iPhone connected to car Bluetooth?

maras2 · 03/02/2018 11:49

rocky Try standalone or you can just go to BBC Iplayer R4 and type in 'tales of the City'

paperdreams16 · 03/02/2018 11:59

Another one for the The High Low Show. I look forward to it every week!

Dancetothebeat32 · 03/02/2018 12:09

Marking my place

GeorgeTheHamster · 03/02/2018 17:23

The TED radio hour is very good - TED talks on a theme put together in one show. I'm not a fan of the presenter's voice particularly but the content is excellent and it's mostly the TED speakers that you hear.

Sadik · 03/02/2018 17:48

Anyone who likes Welcome to Night Vale, I went to the live show (DD's birthday outing - I was providing transport Grin ) and it was brilliant.

winterinmadeira · 03/02/2018 17:50

I love beyond reasonable doubt. I travel for work a lot and it’s been brilliant to listen to and the hours have flown by

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 03/02/2018 19:58

I’m loving the recommendations here. Smile At the moment I’m listening to Extraordinary Stories podcast, which is sort of in the style of they walk among us but is more chatty and conversational. Dirty John is brilliant as is Generation Why.

cariadlet · 03/02/2018 22:04

cariadlet snap! this is my list of podcasts almost to a t Grin
being a professional linguist, the allusionist is my favourite!

Great minds, eh AKingdomForACarrotstick

There were a couple I'd forgotten because my phone was playing up so I've recently had to do a factory reset. That meant reinstalling all my apps and trying to remember which podcasts I subscribed to.

I also enjoy:
Part time genius - similar to Stuff You Should Know
Can He Do That? - a Washington Post podcast analysing Trump's latest shenanigans

Thanks to everyone who's posted on this thread. Some great suggestions. My already ridiculously long subscription list is now even longer.

I've also just subscribed to another podcast which after listening to a trailer. It's called The Boring Talks and is from BBC radio. It advertises itself by saying "Behind every boring subject is another layer of boringness that you could never have imagined..." but the episode descriptions sound really interesting.

Deux · 03/02/2018 22:36

Just remember another couple.

Regrets of the Dying. I found it really made me think, quite profoundly so. There aren’t that many episodes but they’re from different view points. I think only one is from someone terminally ill. Another is a chaplain. Another a photo journalist.

Tip Off is an investigative journalism podcast. Lots of different subjects covered.

haba · 04/02/2018 10:14

Sorry, could someone explain, in words simpler than were used for answering Nancy, how to get/listen to podcasts.

Imagine I'm Marty McFly, arrived from 1988 or something... Blush

I have an (old) android phone- do podcasts take up lots of storage space? Are the apps huge? Does it use a lot of data [wibble]?

I have a macbook, and an iTunes account, but do they play through iTunes on Mac? I don't have Spotify and won't be getting it.

If I use Bluetooth, can I play them from my phone in my car? (I can do this with music).

TIA

DrRanjsRightEyebrow · 04/02/2018 10:15

S*Town.

Allthecarbs · 04/02/2018 10:59

haba there are various ways of downloading a podcast. Some like the BBC ones can be downloaded via the website. I would recommend using WiFi to download as they do take up a lot of data. I don’t think these ones use up your storage but don’t quote me on it!

You can also download an app to listen to them which would take up storage so you would have to delete as you go. Also use WiFi for these. There are quite a few apps so you would have to find one that suits you. What is it that puts you off Spotify? You can get the free version and it is very good for podcasts as you can stream rather than download, also they don’t take up storage.

Allthecarbs · 04/02/2018 11:01

I found this guide on downloading podcasts on your Mac. Hope it’s helpful.

LukeCagesWife · 04/02/2018 11:07

I can recommend woolongtalks for any Marvel DC pop culture fans! Reviews on film comics etc

LukeCagesWife · 04/02/2018 11:11

I also love the history chicks, book v’s movie and the ‘stuff’ collective, especially stuff mom should have told you.

We went to a live recording of stuff you should know in London! Was GREAT.

I listen to mine on Spotify, you can listen without a paid subscription and/or the Apple App Store.

greenbeansqueen · 04/02/2018 12:41

Lore - particularly the early episodes, it's sometimes
scary, creepy and fascinating in equal measure. Looking at folklore and stories, and why we sensible humans believe in things like trolls and elves sometimes, mix that in with some true crime & paranormal experiences and it's a really good listen with lots of insight into human nature.
And S-town, it was brilliant. You think you know what you're getting with that podcast and then suddenly it all changes.

haba · 04/02/2018 13:16

Thank you so much, AllTheCarbs! Flowers really helpful. I should hopefully be able to manage this!

I'm afraid I don't like Spotify's business model, so won't be using it. Quite a number of artists refuse to allow their music on there (I know, I doubt apple are any more ethical Blush but my iPod and macbook were both presents).
As was my kindle, [sob]

Urgh.
I'm a classic fuddy-duddy I'm afraid, I distrust all these online companies- look at the top Google, Facebook, etc developers saying "yes, we basically constructed our products to addict people, and use their data to make enormous profits" and thus they don't allow any of their children to use these platforms...

spinningheart · 04/02/2018 16:21

This is a great thread - have started listening to Alabama Monster this weekend and have downloaded many more suggestions.
In the past have really enjoyed Serial, S Town, This American Life and Reply All. Invisibilia also quite interesting.

I'm a book nerd and I really like the podcast What Should I Read Next? It is released every Tuesday and I try not to listen to it right away, usually cave on a Thurs or Friday and then impatiently wait for the next Tuesday episode.

I also like All the Books - the 2 presenters did grate on my nerves initially, it took a little while for me to get used to their voices. But they usually give several good recommendations per show. They look at the current week's new book releases and review around 8 per episode.

And my final suggestion for book-related podcasts is the back catalogue of Books on the Nightstand.

Updatingmywill · 04/02/2018 16:49

I second The Moth and TED radio hour!

I also listen to the Life Scientific, presented by Jim Al-Khalili, where he talks to a scientist about their life and work, and Science Stories, two episodes I listened to recently are Einstein's fridge and the Duchess who gatecrashed science. Even got my teenage DS interested. Grin

Also Thinking Allowed from the BBC.

Another from NPR (American National Public Radio): Wait, wait don't tell me! - a comedy news quiz. Very funny!

midsomermurderess · 04/02/2018 17:12

I’ve recently discovered Fortunately with Fi Glover and Jane Garvey. They sort of meanderingly chat about any old thing and then have a bit of a chat with eg Ed Milliband, Tom Kerridge, John Morton. It’s very funny and a relief, to me, from all the heavy political stuff I’ve been ploughing through.
On Ed Milliband, he and Geoff Lloyd’s Resons to be Cheerful; and Unfiltered, James O’Brien interviews a wide range of people like Lily Allen, David Baddiel.

Gwenhwyfar · 04/02/2018 22:02

Silly question, but how do you listen to podcasts? I presume on a smart phone, but how exactly?

StripySocksAndDocs · 04/02/2018 22:11

Ive spotify. They are under podcast category. Or you can search them.

I listen to History Chicks this way. The episodes play in order.
