"Get outta my village" screams Peggy Mitchell

Family lore says that I have the name I have because my dad went off piste when he went to register the birth so he conflated the two names he was supposed to register into the name of a well known actress of the time.

I think that Helen might sound indifferent now but will become fiercely protective of the baby. Pat will continue to wail pointlessly whatever happens now.
Rob is sounding more and more unhinged.

3littlefrogs · 23/05/2016 11:43

I'm waiting for him to attack Kirsty, (she won't allow him to control her and he hates her).

He was working himself up into quite a paddy because he thought no-one was informing him about the birth.

Hopefully this will be in front of witnesses and he will be arrested...

What, there was an actor called Enoch Root?

(Don't worry, am not expecting you to out what is presumably an unusual RL name! And I have read Neal Stephenson.)

EBearhug · 23/05/2016 11:49

He was working himself up into quite a paddy because he thought no-one was informing him about the birth.

And judging them on his own standards, deciding they were doing it out of spite.

AskingForAPal · 23/05/2016 11:52

Wait, are you telling me I can just go along to a registry office and tell the registrar I've had a baby and I'll name her PrincessCheesetastic without any need for me to prove it at all?

That's bonkers, surely not.

BertrandRussell · 23/05/2016 11:55

If you have a baby in hospital, the hospital informs the local registry office. That's how they know to chase you if you don't do it within 6 weeks.

redshoeblueshoe · 23/05/2016 12:11

Enoch - my Dad named me after a famous actress (but my name is ordinary) Well he said she was famous I've never heard of her. Shock

Sinkingfeeling · 23/05/2016 12:16

You don't have to have the baby with you when you register a birth. The details you give about date and place of birth and mother's surname will be cross-checked against an NHS birth notification list.

You can register a baby in a different area to the one the child was born in, but only by declaration. The declaration will be sent to the district of birth and the birth certificates issued from that district by post.

SaraTheFairy · 23/05/2016 12:19

I named my daughter after a 1930s English cricket player, only a middle name mind but only because my husband said it was ridiculous to call a girl Harold

R4 · 23/05/2016 12:45

I like the idea of calling the middle stump name after a cricketer, especially a bowler!Grin

In theory, it seems you could. However, I assume that the registrar has some statutory responsibility to satisfy themselves that you are registering a genuine birth and you are entitled to do so. This is presumably why they ask for ID and usually ask to see the red book. Assuming you persuaded them, then eventually they must reconcile to birth notifications from the hospital, so it would flag up eventually. And maybe if you claim to have had a home birth with no professional in attendance, they do ask for some other evidence?

I've no idea what penalties there are in the law for falsely registering a birth, but I suggest you research that before trying out your Cheesetastic plan.Grin

Routenationale · 23/05/2016 12:54

All births in England, Wales and Northern Ireland must be registered within 42 days of the child being born.

You should do this at the local register office for the area where the baby was born or at the hospital before the mother leaves. The hospital will tell you if you can register the birth there.

If you can’t register the birth in the area where the baby was born, you can go to another register office and they will send your details to the correct office.

So Knob could register the birth without going to the register office local to where the baby was born.

I remember being told to be sure to take the baby with me, but perhaps the rules have changed since then.

LurkonTAthread · 23/05/2016 12:55

I had my babies at home. The midwife went into the hospital to put it on their system which generated an NHS number for the baby, and I was given this to take to the registrar. We had to book to see the registrar. Not sure if we had to give the NHS number then, but we certainly did at the appointment. As this would be in the red book too, I would say that that is where the checking occurs. But possibly after the registration.

AugustaFinkNottle · 23/05/2016 13:16

If it's that easy to register a birth, maybe one of use should nip into the local Registry and register SOK to get in before Knob ?

Gumpendorf · 23/05/2016 13:21

Hopefully this will be in front of witnesses

Who will say 'it's not surprising given all that poor man has been through. And now he can't see his own baby either'.

Sorry for being such a cynic. I don't think Rob is going to be unmasked in the foreseeable future. Tim Watson has implied he has an ongoing role, so we're all set for pantomime at BHC and misery at BF for years Angry

Gumpendorf · 23/05/2016 13:22

Brilliant Augusta. Flowers

Toomuchtea · 23/05/2016 14:12

Can anyone remember if Pat went through this wail, wail, me, me, me performance when Henry was born?

SleepyRoo · 23/05/2016 14:19

Almost unlistenable. Can't bear this storyline.

R4 · 23/05/2016 14:23

I don't know TmTea, we were all a bit preoccupied with dear Nigel at the time.Sad
I hope they don't repeat one in / one out.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 23/05/2016 14:24

Tea I don't think so - the key relationship at stake when Helen was having Henry was with Tony, to whom she'd been foul throughout pregnancy, so that's what we heard most of iirc.

KathyBeale · 23/05/2016 14:33

Does Rob have to prove he's married to Helen to register the birth? Because if he's anything like my husband he'd not have any idea where the wedding certificate is...

Toomuchtea · 23/05/2016 14:40

Yes, all I remember of that time is Nigel, and the general horror, and Tony. Oh and the late-lamented midwife, daughter of Alan, whose name I've entirely forgotten. The one who saved the day. I don't remember Pat saying anything at all, which would argue she acted entirely in character at the time!

R4 · 23/05/2016 14:49

Amy. That's who you are thinking of.
Pat was mercifully quiet at the time - no wailing about "but why didn't I spot the pre-eclampsia. I'm her Mother."

EBearhug · 23/05/2016 14:54

if he's anything like my husband he'd not have any idea where the wedding certificate is...

I suspect Rob will know exactly where any piece of paper is, which gives him a hold over her - unless Ursula moved things round when she was clearing up.

theredjellybean · 23/05/2016 14:55

just listened...how flipping ridiculous ...pre-eclampsia does not 'come back'
suddenly during labour ...she became eclamptic not pre eclamptic why do they have such stupid mistakes really undermines the programme...( ok i need to get of high horse)

What happens to women in prison who give birth and do not have a partner/husband etc who registers thier babies ?

I said weeks ago that helen didn't want the baby and would swap it for henry.
