I fear I may not be able to stomach the film after all.

Could it be old fashioned prejudice against people who've had mental health issues which is behind Peggy's stance? (And possibly others' stances, I assume?) Not that anyone would ever say that in so many words - or would they?

Limelight · 15/04/2016 20:31

Bloody Peggoi. She really is a dinosaur and you know, just mean! I've never quite been able to get past the feeling that the reason she thinks Rob is the A bridge equivalent to the Milk Tray Man is because he's posh.

Minimammoth · 15/04/2016 20:33

We need a bigger huff Guach.

I'm confused. So the defence is not allowed to talk to Kirsty or Henry as they are key witnesses for the prosecution? Surely they are also key witnesses for the defence??
Another question - I watched the News night clip. Louisa P is good looking. Do you think they would have replaced her before this big storyline if she had not been? Is there no longer such a thing as a 'perfect face for radio'?

Vaara · 15/04/2016 20:45

Kirsty's going to be a pretty shit witness for the prosecution.... Will that be the turning point at the trial?

AugustaFinkNottle · 15/04/2016 20:46

I think interference with prosecution witnesses is a no-no, even if they are also likely to give evidence that favours the defence. But there again, we have the problem that Pat and Tony are free to talk to Kirsty, so I'm not sure how that works. In some respects it may help the defence that Kirsty is a prosecution witness, because you can lead your opponent's witnesses when you can't lead your own.

I wonder if Helen is refusing to talk to Pat and Tony because of Pat's enthusiastic support of Knob in the past?

Vaara · 15/04/2016 20:46

What was Peggy's tone of voice like when she got all shitty with pat about not taking her to the hairdressers?

Aul bitch

AugustaFinkNottle · 15/04/2016 20:50

I suppose the prosecution will ask Kirsty the sort of questions the police put - Did she see any evidence of injuries? Did Helen ever actually complain to her about coercive control by Rob? Did Helen ever say anything about rape to her? etc.

I wonder if the defence will call an expert on coercive control? The jury is going to need it spelt out pretty clearly how gaslighting etc works.

EasyToEatTiger · 15/04/2016 20:55

Peggy has been drawn into Rob's web of lies. I expect that Helen doesn't know how to articulate what has happened. I expect she blames herself. It is the unravelling which will take the time. After all, she doesn't have to listen to herself. Not like we do. Gah.

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 15/04/2016 21:21

Helen isn't seeing anyone so that we canmot here what she is saying the same way we are not hearing what Rob is saying.

Plus perhaps they gave them both a holiday.

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 15/04/2016 21:23

Oh and I have met other women of Peggoi's age who automatically assume men are right and women's opinions are unworthy despute having many opinions of their own.

I mean really Peggy only met him about 3 times. Just wait till she hears he's s covert culvery stuffer. She'll be all "I knew it, didn't I say". As will Susan. Peggy is just Susan with money and a god complex.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 15/04/2016 21:26

DadDadDad yup that sort of thing. I heard the episode where they tried to guess her weight and then asked her. It was quite entertaining.

I'd like to hear more but maybe with Lynda trying to persuade Robert just to sit on it with her (quite chastely mind) and then it breaks and she has to complain to Eddie and there's a hilarious misunderstanding with Eddie and Joe assuming there have been shenanigans that have led to the paste table's sad demise? Ideally Lynda would mention splinters to hilarious effect.

Any hoo, Piggoi being a bitch is fine with me so I'll have a listen to the last episode.

AugustaFinkNottle · 15/04/2016 21:29

When Rob did meet Piggoim he massively sucked up to her, but for purely financial reasons. She's too dim to understand that.

Gruach · 15/04/2016 21:33

Plus perhaps they gave them both a holiday.

Oh! Perhaps this is what K.D was referring to a couple of months ago when he tweeted about the difficulties of writing a script when vital actors would not be available?

I guess TW and LP were busy rehearsing their breakthrough movies ...

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 15/04/2016 21:35

And yet she thinks she is shrewd.

I suppose they have yet to tumble that he is grasping as they seem to think he is well off ... despite not working for months.

Pat needs to think - the wooden train incident (that was even before they married wasn't it), not coming over for family occasions, all the times Rob claimed H was to ill to attend meetings.

I don't think Peggy is any worse than usual, she's just.......well, Peggy.
Rob wasn't known to be abusive, except by Kirsty. Even to those who disliked him, he gave every appearance of being attentive to Helen, and generous, even if it was with other people's money. He took on Henry, helped out with the family business, or so it would seem to outsiders. Helen had been acting erratically recently - yes, because of him, but again to an outsider she's been quite labile - tearful, snappy etc - people would be thinking he's been quite patient and putting up with a lot. He even got his lovely mum to come and help out! So to the rest of the village, including Peggy who's been kept out of the loop, there is no history of abuse, no provocation, no reason for Helen to do this. I think we heard her bewilderment.

I liked it that Lillian said things aren't looking good for Helen - no, they're not, and the barrister suggested as much , no real evidence of abuse so far.

Also, the whole thing about her not being allowed to see Henry, the barrister was right, people don't know she's not a danger to him at the moment, noone thought she was a danger to Rob till she turned him into sushi. "no comment" is fine for police interviews but until she starts talking to someone, nobody knows her thought processes and intentions, and thus her potential risk to herself or anyone else.

I liked this episode, for the first time in weeks, and I loved the Lynda , Eddie section!

shinynewusername · 15/04/2016 22:13

Peggy's intonation is often all over the place Vaara, I tend to put it down to bad acting rather than anything meaningful to do with the script

That's a little harsh, given that June Spencer (who plays her) is 96. Lots of elderly people find their vocalisation gets weaker and less reliable as the muscles that control speech weaken. So I don't think it is necessarily bad acting.

JessTitchener · 15/04/2016 22:17

Peggy is just Susan with money and a god complex

YY to this.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 15/04/2016 22:17

Just listened. I didn't think Peggy was too bad considering.

The limo was v tacky choice of Knob.

Liked the pipe chat with Eddie and Lynda. Excellent use of the word "carbuncle".

LillianGish · 15/04/2016 22:30

Pat needs to think - her not being allowed to drive, not being allowed to work, Knob taking over her job, Knob getting her salary paid into his joint account, their not being allowed to see her and hardly ever seeing Henry - essentially being isolated from her family culminating in the secret wedding. Knob letting Henwee hunt (something Helen was dead against), the boarding school incident at the tea party with Henwee, the party where she burst into tears with Tom (have forgotten exact details - someone will remember), the whole home birth thing - actually there are lots of little things if she thinks back to the days when she was Patbot which individually don't say much, but which taken together build up a picture. If KIrsty is a witness for the prosecution that has to be good news for Helen - especially when Anna Tregorran asks her why she was at the cottage that night and why she went back.

R4 · 15/04/2016 22:35

the party where she burst into tears with Tom (have forgotten exact details - someone will remember)

It was Tom's birthday. Which is also John's deathday.

AugustaFinkNottle · 15/04/2016 22:35

I didn't think Peggy was being shitty about not being taken to the hairdresser. She'd already anticipated that it wouldn't be possible and sorted it out with Lill.
