Can anybody remember the Tom Forrest manslaughter trial? Was it accurate, legally? Did it cause a stir amongst the listening public?

Gruach · 10/04/2016 12:24

I'd forgotten the original question! Yes, Christine certainly has experience of living through a crisis involving police and court - I would have thought she'd be thoroughly traumatised by what's happening now.

HalsallRedux · 10/04/2016 12:27

I inadvertently heard the film after enduring it last week too. Good grief, some of the 'other parts' were woodenly-acted. Policewoman, swab woman, duty doc and the woman who interviewed a set of pre-recorded lines Henwee all made Auntie Cardboard sound like a master of the dramatic arts Hmm

BoreOfWhabylon · 10/04/2016 12:29

It was in 1957 Jessie Grin !

Some of us on the thread may have heard it as background to our very early childhoods, although unlikely to have remembered much of it Wink

GypsyFl0ss · 10/04/2016 12:41

It's not Ursula's accent, it's her ill fitting dentures that make me squirm.

...all made Auntie Cardboard sound like a master of the dramatic arts absolutely agree Halsall.

Forgot to say Thankyou once again Pseudo . You are indeed a Star

JessieMcJessie · 10/04/2016 12:44

I thought some might have older relatives who were listeners Bore. Should have asked "does anyone know anyone who remembers...". My Mum was 20 in 1957 and would only be 69 now if alive and I would definitely still be talking about TA to her if she were here.

JessieMcJessie · 10/04/2016 12:46

Ah no I tell a lie, she was only 10 in 1957 Blush. But still poss some of us might know 80 year olds who like a chat about TA .

Imbroglio · 10/04/2016 12:53

My favourite bit was Susan talking about her time in chokey.

It was just so Susan to enjoy being able to dispense advice to others on this delicate matter.

EBearhug · 10/04/2016 13:43

Ed did get his certificate. Clarrie was talking about framing it and putting it on the wall. I was reminded of Maureen Lipman in the old BT ads - "You got an 'ology!"

Brian also said they'd signed him up for some conference/course over in East Anglia, same terms.

MuttonCadet · 10/04/2016 13:48

Just had a conversation with my mum, she, and all her cronies have stopped listening. So they rely on me to keep them updated, I almost pointed her in the direction of this thread, (then decided I wanted to keep mumsnet to myself).

I can ask her about the storyline Jessie, she would have been young but my grandparents were avid listeners as well.

Vango · 10/04/2016 13:52

Gruach that article talks about the new law coming into force in December last year and all the good work the Archers storyline has done highlighting an example of behaviour that is controlling and coercive. If the story now focuses on Helen's prosecution for attempted murder will we ever get to hear what might happen to a person who brings a prosecution against a partner under that new law?

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 10/04/2016 13:59

The one thing for sure vango is they are looking at nothing like the kind of sentence Helen might face.

That article claims 1.2 million incidents and the ONS stats mentioned >58000 prosecutions for DV related offences (that's before the new offence). 58000 that is a staggering number. And the tip of an iceberg of DA.
And how many women stabbed their abusive partner last year?? I know I keep banging on about it but could it have been less likely?

Vango · 10/04/2016 14:13

And that's the disappointment SmallLegs. Instead of seeing it to a more realistic conclusion we have the ratings grabbing shocker, throwing the whole thing off track for the sake of an explosive dramatic ending. Just think of all the good that could have been achieved had they chosen to carry on down the refuge and prosecution route. May even have resulted in a campaign for tougher sentencing.

Vango · 10/04/2016 14:19

And if Helen 'gets off', and Rob miraculously recovers, will she ever have the strength to have him arrested under the new law? Or is that another storyline dropped in favour of......let's see.....the establishment of a Waco style cult occupying the yurts up at Home Farm? Keep the new listeners on tenterhooks that would!

JasperDamerel · 10/04/2016 14:53

My dad remembers the manslaughter trial, but he was 7 at the time, so is a bit vague about the finer details.

PseudoBadger · 10/04/2016 14:54

Maybe they'll live happily ever after, and reminisce about "the time you tried to murder me, darling", and "all that funny gas lighting business, darling" Hmm

I get fanatical about listening and then take a break. I stopped when the results of Rob's paternity test were known and came back 3 weeks ago. Can you kind souls update me on:-

  1. Are Roy and Phoebe fully reconciled?
  2. Has Kate buggered off again?
  3. Adam and Ian? What is the status?
  4. Re number 4 - the character who had a crush on Adam- has he gone?
  5. Is Heather Pet dead?
Gruach · 10/04/2016 15:12
  1. Tentatively.
  2. Kate is still building a green retreat at Home Farm.
  3. Married. With Ian biding his time to confront Adam with Rob's revelation.
  4. Charlie banished to a fish farm in Scotland after the mega dairy plague.
  5. Died on the road to Brookfield. (Look up the relevant thread - the event and the comments equally hilarious.
EmilyDickinson · 10/04/2016 15:14

1 Yes.
2 No. She supposedly setting up her yurt business.
3 Ian knows (from Rob) that Adam cheated on him with Charlie. He doesn't seem to have told Adam he knows. They got married anyway. Ian stopped speaking to Helen as a result, because Helen had told Rob about the affair but not Ian.
4 Charlie has left for a job on a fish farm. He asked Adam to come with him. Adam dithered a bit but declined.
5 Heather Pet died at a motorway service station whilst on her way to live at Brookfield.

Gruach · 10/04/2016 15:15

And if any man ever addresses me as "darling" from now on ...

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 10/04/2016 15:17

Thank you both.

BoffinMum · 10/04/2016 15:25

Marking thread
I keep losing you all

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 10/04/2016 15:28
  1. Yes, 2. No, 3. We don't know. 4. Charlie - yes, gone but not forgotten. 5. Yes.
Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 10/04/2016 15:32

Oh wow, that worked! Posting from a coach in Turkey. Fully up to speed, thanks to the Internet. Far, far more to follow once back home later this week. For the moment, I'll just say 'Aaaaargh' re the direction this sl has taken.
