I was told the same at my booking in appointment, Teaplease. The trouble is, I seem to remember the questions were quite direct and require the woman to actually know she is being abused. Helen is now getting some idea but wouldn't have said anything at the booking appointment. At the later appointments it was quite normal for fathers to be there to hear the heartbeat and you could quite easily see a different midwife each time. Rob is more than capable of being charming and caring for a midwife. Pretty sure she should be having more appointments though given her history. A friend of mine who had pre-eclampsia was monitored at least every two weeks with her second.

Travelledtheworld · 09/03/2016 14:09

Me too !
And she has obviously been reading Helens maternity notes. Thought this sort of thing was covered by medical confidentiality ?

Travelledtheworld · 09/03/2016 14:14

Re previous comments about who goes with the Mum to see to the midwife ?
In our local hospital there is a notice in the ultrasound and X-ray waiting area

an obstetric ultrasound is a medical procedure and we request that the mother to be is accompanied by only ONE adult

Swirlingasong · 09/03/2016 14:24

Actually, I just remembered that when I was pregnant with DC2, DH hadn't been to a couple of appointments and a midwife asked in a concerned fashion why he wasn't there.

I don't listen regularly, just keep up through the the catch up summaries and this excellent thread. But did just hear last night's and think the evil of R and U over the toad incident and packing H off to school is just too much to be credible. Too melodramatic now and shark has been over jumped! It's distressing but almost caricature. Would have been better not to bring U in as jailer/partner in crime, IMO.

GruntledOne · 09/03/2016 14:58

What the Hell happened with the bath water?!!!

Seconded. How can they just leave that hanging? Helen seems oblivious - surely if it happened she would have shown some evidence of feeling bad about it? And if it didn't, Henry would have let something out to Pat and Tony?

I'm really confused about the whole Ursula issue and indeed what she is supposed to add to the storyline. The business with the burnt Toad in the Hole is surely classic Knob, but it seems much more likely that Arsula did it given the megafuss she made about the bloody thing and the way she extended her unnecessary visit to the shop. But how likely is it that she would have decided to sabotage Helen's mental health using exactly the same methods that Knob does? They're highly unlikely to have got together to plan anything explicitly. Or are we supposed to decide that Knob gets all his ideas from Arsula's techniques? In which case why does he trust her so much with the welfare of SOK?

I thought the Brookfield saga was bloody ridiculous, but what was an excellent storyline with Helen and Rob seems to plumb new depths with the totally unnecessary introduction of Arsula. After this showing, I'm surprised the Beeb want SOC on Eastenders, you'd think they'd point him firmly in the direction of the dole queue.

Boomingmarvellous · 09/03/2016 15:03

I'm not blaming Ursilla for knob being a controlling arse.

I am not what happened to me. I am what I chose to become

More or less Grin

Arse/Knob dynamic too confusing/unlikely

throws up far too many questions

being charitable, I'd say they are trying to shoehorn TOO MUCH into 13 minutes 6 times a week

being uncharitable I'd say they've gorn bleedin mad

BYOSnowman · 09/03/2016 15:35

Soc is perfectly suited to ee!

So here's what I reckon

Arse and knob are actually lovers and they are baby sellers - so they need a home birth so the prospective parents can be present

They will then sell Henry and Helen into the white slave trade (that wasn't a boarding school he was on the phone to)

Tony will have been recast in the meantime and Liam neeson will have taken on the role. He will track the gang down to Paris....

Toomuchtea · 09/03/2016 15:37

I can sort of see the Arsula-Rob thing. We know from Rob that he feels very much the second best son, and from what I've seen in family dynamics, that feeling tends to stay with you no matter how old you are. If he and his brother were brought up to compete for Arsula's affections, at the moment Rob must feel he's on to a winner. His mother is there, giving him all her attention, and she's not with Miles. Rob's been conditioned from birth to want to please her, so that's what he does.

In that sort of situation, dismissal of other siblings' feelings can seem entirely normal. They're competition, and if they're seen as bad or incompetent that can only be good.

Rob I think at the moment, if not always, sees Helen in the light of another sibling, and as competition (remember how when A first appeared, she seemed to favour Helen and that Rob didn't like that at all). He has to come first with his mother, and that's what's most important to him. He's still treating Helen in much the same way, but I think the reasons for it have shifted.

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 09/03/2016 16:01

I can see that as you describe it tea but they've thrown the kitchen sink at it put in too many superfluous details (and apparently forgotten about them) ie it doesn't 'fit' with the backstory

yy re soc at EE

I watched 10 minutes of it the other night and I reckon he'd be a perfect fit

LowDudgeon · 09/03/2016 16:38

He came from EE in the first place. Everybody feared he would turn Ambridge into Walford. Clever old everybody.

Presume he's choosing to return to a place where people prefer silly melodramatic stories Hmm

Toomuchtea · 09/03/2016 16:48

I can't bear EE. I gave up watching years ago. I find the MASSIVE DRAMA EVERY CHRISTMAS storyline arcs particularly infuriating.

sunnydayinmay · 09/03/2016 17:06

Another one who has all but given up last listening. I have to turn off now if I hear Rob or Ursula. Just want this SL finished with.

BoreOfWhabylon · 09/03/2016 18:14

Loving Liam Neeson as Tony Grin

ColdTeaAgain · 09/03/2016 18:35

Didn't know SOC came from EE, glad he's going back where he belongs!

I could hear some of EE the other night while I was washing up as the tv had been left on and it just sounded like constant shouting and misery. How on earth people consider that entertainment is beyond me!

EasyToEatTiger · 09/03/2016 18:36

I too think they've all gone mad. I haven't watched EE for decades, really since I was a student. I am baffled that 2 people, unrelated to a child, can sit about plotting its future. Last night I watched Gaslight, and it was as though the plot had been plagiarised for TA. I wonder what movie plot will be planted in the good village of Ambridge? Groundhog Day might be fun. Or how about the Stepford Wives, or Towering Inferno or....

LowDudgeon · 09/03/2016 18:57

What's most peculiar is that he actually worked on TA first - before he went to EE & did all that mad dramatic stuff there.

That was 1999-2001. I can't remember any stupid melodrama then. Was that down to whoever was top dog then? Who was it - anybody? (I bet Gasp0de knows Grin) Maybe his dramatic urges were repressed then.

'His history with The Archers dates back to 1999 when he worked as the soap’s producer, storyliner and director.'

LowDudgeon · 09/03/2016 18:59

Uh-oh - Sid & Jolene's shower scene was him. & Ruths cancer. &, I bet, Ben's conception on top of the hay.

Plus ça change...

LowDudgeon · 09/03/2016 19:03

& all the Siobhan & Brian stuff, & Lilian & Scott.

It's all coming back to me now Grin

BYOSnowman · 09/03/2016 19:03

Wasn't he a sw then though rather than the ed?

sunnydayinmay · 09/03/2016 19:06

Who's that girl?

Shallishanti · 09/03/2016 19:09

gah- thought it might have been previously undisclosed daughter of Rob

LowDudgeon · 09/03/2016 19:10

Producer, 'storyliner' & director according to that link.

That's why I asked who was editor then.
