Scenes between David and Ruth have been great, but don't you feel like SW are trying to hard to say "how could you have ever thought that her extended stay in NZ was a problem? You silly listeners for thinking the Archer marriage is anything other than rock solid! I suppose you also believed they were going to sell Brookfield, ha ha, we had you going there!"

AdventuresOfADentist · 09/01/2016 11:03

Agree about Brine's charm, but at least this time it was just to cheer her up/support her because she was down, not to try and win her back after cheating on her. Ie there wasn't anything for him to gain, apart from a happier wife.

LyndaNotLinda I've not kept a list of thread titles, but if you do the right search you can see all the Radio Addicts threads started by Pseudo since April 2013 - here's the link giving the results:

Brian was OL but I felt he could have said something more concrete to Jenny about her achievements, and he should def have mentioned the Bouddica of Borsetshire. Saying "you're not past it" at 71 rings a bit hollow- it's fairly old really. I say this as someone neither of whose parents made it close to that age.

JessieMcJessie · 09/01/2016 12:49

OK not OL.

mummytime · 09/01/2016 15:04

Well it would be good if they really went with the story. There are plenty of people Jenny's age and older studying part time at Oxford. Maybe she should pick up a continuing ed prospectus/leaflet when they drop Phoebe off or something.

BTW Oxford term are only 8 weeks long so Phoebe could be barely absent from Ambridge.

Stickerrocks · 09/01/2016 22:52

Justin was definitely turning on the charm when he made the Cambridge comment. Have we ever heard Mrs Justin speak? Maybe Jennifer Dahling will tumble into his arms.

TopOfTheCliff · 09/01/2016 23:32

I'd like to hear from Mrs Justin. Isn't she called Miranda? I imagine she is formidable and understands her husband very well. She will have been married to him since he was young and struggling and has supported him all the way up the greasy pole and is now enjoying the fruit of their labours. She will chase away any attempt to capture him.

LyndaNotLinda · 10/01/2016 00:14

Thanks D3. I think our threads have the best 'gang' names on the boards :)

I would love it if JD is so inspired by Phoebe that she decides to do a degree herself.

Joskar · 10/01/2016 00:29

Well I think BOOP for Brine. He didn't make it all about himself which is huge progress for him and JD felt better. Plus she's got twenty odd years ahead (given Peggoi's record) so he's right that she's not done yet. I know he's a cheater and an arrogant (domestically helpless) git but I still like him. He's got personality and I think he recognises JD's worth.

Unlike that fannybaws David. Grrr! What a wanker. Is Ruth in the business of coming up with totally ridiculous schemes? Now he's given his approval all their marital problems disappear? Balls do they. No matter how much coffee she doesn't make she's not "in charge". No nor anything like it. If he was after changing to Spring calving they would whether Ruth liked it or not. Pah!

BYOSnowman · 10/01/2016 08:59

I thought Justin was on trophy wife number two. As in, wife one puts up with all the shit as he works his way up, brings up kids etc etc, only to be dumped for a much younger model once he can ease off the work and has made his millions

BitOutOfPractice · 10/01/2016 09:09

What are you basing that on byos?

Isn't it odd that Ruth hadn't even mentioned HP since she got back

ppeatfruit · 10/01/2016 09:51

Well considering she's a REAL person, we're not there for all their conversations are we BOOP ? Grin

Joskar No one can win on TA can they? I reckon Dave and Ruth have a fairly normal marriage; up and down, they both make most the decisions and do discuss them. She wanted to go up north and Dave WAS going along with it.

Gruach · 10/01/2016 09:56

What do we know about Miranda (?)?

Demanding - appears to travel with an entire shop full of clothes and must always have a luxurious place in which to change into them.

Justin is anxious to please her. Is that because she's 23 or because she's fearsome or both? (If they haven't yet decided I'd love to hear that she's a QC or a robotics engineer - but I suspect I will remain unsatisfied.)

She seems to make her demands through him. Which may suggest she takes her status from him but is just as likely to be because Ben's stage school fees are cutting into the budget.

BitOutOfPractice · 10/01/2016 09:57

You know what I mean ppeat. Before she went it was all angst ridden heart to hearts with Usher about how she would never forgive herself. Now, not a peep.

ppeatfruit · 10/01/2016 10:03

Yes of course I do BOOP I'm just trying, like you usually do Grin , to redress the negativity on here, it gets on my nerves a bit.

R4 · 10/01/2016 10:49

I love the idea that Ruth is bff with Usher.Grin

Gruach · 10/01/2016 11:14

I'm feeling slightly tempted towards emotion regarding the Oxford thing. It's delightful that after three generations of intellectual frustration; Peggy, Jenny, Kate (whose university career was just pissing about) a Home Farm woman finally has a clear shot.

My DM, like Peggy but far from London, also won a scholarship to grammar school and also never got there (though her family were all very keen). Years later, when I was an undergraduate and she was in another country it transpired that she needed a particular degree to further her career. The relevant university was a plane ride away in a country she scarcely knew. And she did it. I was a thousand times more proud of her than I could ever be of myself. So if Jenny does decide she wants a degree I'm right behind her.

mollie123 · 10/01/2016 11:27

aaargh - Jennifer moaning about her life and what she hasn't achieved
she has Oh Brian, healthy children and grandchildren, a nice house (with new kitchen), a swimming pool, her life is what she has made it - stop moaning woman.
Echoing a pp - my mother could have gone on to train as a teacher in the 1930s but she had to take the 'girl's route' and go to work in an office because the family finances (remember there was a depression on) and money was tight
when I went to university - the 'education is wasted on girls' argument was trotted out but I went anyway (only 10% went to university) and had a career - BUT my life has been much tougher than JD so she should not be whinging (I am over-infested in her angst maybe).
Why did JD who is the same age as me give or take a few years - not go to university anyway if she was so clever?
my final thought on the 'feebs' at Oxford storyline - if she is not able to open a letter that affects her future without help from her gran she really needs to toughen up. Notice they did not say what grades she has to get - usually it is AAA for that course.

BYOSnowman · 10/01/2016 11:29

Purely based on people I know in similar positions to Justin!!

GruntledOne · 10/01/2016 11:46

I think in general David does treat Ruth as an equal partner though the cancellation of the Prudhoe move was obviously a massive exception to that rule. But then the choice of Prudhoe was solely hers and the moving plan was always ludicrous anyway. There are plenty of men who would have moaned a bit about her spending so much time away last year - especially when her mother was in a nursing home and therefore didn't need looking after all day every day - and who would have made even more of a fuss about the extended NZ trip. As ppeat said, he's no saint but he's not that dreadful either.

BertrandRussell · 10/01/2016 11:58

I wonder how long it'll be before Iain discovers that Jenny "couldn't wish for a better mother in law" Aldridge told Rob about Adam's bits on the side?

BitOutOfPractice · 10/01/2016 12:14

Ha! Touché ppeat.

I rarely post now. I'm usually puzzled as to why so many people listen so avidly when they clearly hate it and it winds them up so much.

PseudoBadger · 10/01/2016 12:23

I can't wait for the guest appearances from Plan B and Usher!

Buck up BOOP.

"Ppeat Points" wouldn't sound nearly as cool ...HmmGrin
