Even if Ruth does want to come home for Christmas, and even if she does have an open ticket, what are the chances of her just being able to hop on a plane in the week before Christmas?

Was Simon Pemberton the other Lizzie/Smugula sharee? And is it always Lizzie who gets Smugula's cast-offs or is it ever the other way round? I'd forgotten about Nigel being one of the others.

AnnieNoMouse · 12/12/2015 08:52

Does Ian know about Pawel?
My prediction is that the wedding will go ahead and Charlie will leave.
Rob will make it known about Adam and Charlie's snog but it won't make a difference to Ian.
I agree Rob will get the Berrow Farm job back and be shown to be out of his depth.
On the subject of Rob I am so glad he's not been in it for a few days - he's like the unpleasant spouse of a good friend or family member who you're always relieved to find is out when you go to visit F/F because the atmosphere totally changes when he does turn up.

YeOldeTrout · 12/12/2015 09:03

Ian's pretty sure that Adam has strayed. That news won't come as complete surprise.
Funny how much Adam treats Ian like Bryan treats Jenny.

BoreOfWhabylon · 12/12/2015 09:14

Yes, Knob will go back to Berrow. Thus paving the way for Ursula (and her rottweiler) to move in to ensure Hellin gets plenty of rest.

LillianGish · 12/12/2015 09:14

Charlie's departure from Berrow is another inconconvincing plot - this is the man who risked his life in the flood (caused by Knob) to unblock the culvert. A man who had nothing in his life but Berrow Farm and whose sole mission was to carry out Justin's orders. Can't believe for a moment Knob would get his old job back (or even want it for that matter - far too all-consuming leaving him no time to monitor Helen's every move). I'm also slightly surprised that having turned Charlie into quite a convincing 3D character he is going to disappear to Perth (though perhaps Perth is just another version of NZ, Canada, Hungary, South Africa and he will be back in the fullness of time).

ApplesinmyPocket · 12/12/2015 09:18

Rooth will come back at the eleventh hour as a 'surprise', cue joyful tears all round (but tears of rage from all the listeners who hoped she was settling down happily Over There.)

I enjoyed Charlie's simmering passion more when it was unspoken, I think. Though I thought he was very convincing in that scene; less so Adam who sounded a bit blustery. I liked Charlie giving up the fight with a gentle 'It's ok, Adam.' He's such a good character, I hope they're not going to let him go.

Gruach · 12/12/2015 09:38

Funny how much Adam treats Ian like Brian treats Jenny.

Spot on OldeTrout!

Have to say, although it was all very tense and touching, I don't believe for one second that Charlie, knowing Adam as he does, could ever have imagined he would leave Home Farm for nothing in particular.

Gozogozo · 12/12/2015 10:10

Re Ruth's return, Tim Bentinck thoroughly let the cat out of the bag about Ruth returning later than planned by revealing that he didn't know if Ruth would ever come back, when the cast were at the point of recording week 3 or 4 of December....as we all now see. Interesting that David wouldn't know that.
His rant to his mother, rather than properly communicating with his wife, smacks of a scared man, taking his fear and anger out on his daughter as her proxy, even before the useless phonecall.

LyndaNotLinda · 12/12/2015 10:39

Oh yes of course Nigel! It was Simon P I was thinking of - had forgotten about Nigel.

The whole Berrow SL where They haven't found a replacement for Knob and Charlie has been found wanting for failing to do both his job and Rob's effectively really irritates me. And Ruth would never just airily announce she's extending her trip.

Gah - it's all so unconvincing

EBearhug · 12/12/2015 10:48

Which of them went out with Cameron Fraser? I'm sure there was more than one there.

choccyp1g · 12/12/2015 10:57

Cameron Fraser was with Caroline and fleeced her for a lot of money, then moved on to Lizzie and dumped her, pregnant, at a service station.

selsigfach · 12/12/2015 11:14

Ooof, I was just thinking how so not cricket it is that shag your sister's ex and was feeling all Team Smugula (!) but apparently they've been doing it to each other for years with multiple men. It's another world in Ambridge.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/12/2015 11:21

Shula was quite a goer when she was young. Neil had a thing for her but as far as I know it was never reciprocated. Before my time, there was apparently a racy scene in a cornfield with a reporter from the Borchester Echo, which had listeners writing in to complain! Later there was Nigel, then Mark Hebden, then some other chap with whom she went off travelling, then Mark again, and this time she married him. He died in a car crash and she had a thing with Simon Pemberton for a while, but he hit her, so she ended it. Later Simon got involved with Debbie and hit her too, which Shula felt very bad about, because she felt she should have warned Debbie. She supported Debbie when she went to the police. He was prosecuted but got off with a suspended sentence or a small fine. Shula then had a fling with Doc Locke in spite of the fact that he was living with Usha and she was going out with Alistair. All very torrid!

Elizabeth went out with Nigel in a fairly casual way but then got involved with Cameron Fraser, who had previously gone out with Caroline. Cameron was a chancer whose business ventures went badly wrong, losing a lot of people a lot of money (including Caroline and Marjorie Antrobus). He prepared to flee the country. Elizabeth wanted to go with him - moral compass completely broken, apparently - and he said OK, but abandoned her at a motorway service station. She was pregnant and decided to have a termination. She got together with Nigel after that and of course eventually married him. Since he fell off the roof, she's had a tentative romance with Ifty (was that his name?) and a mad fling with Roy.

Debbie and Caroline are the other people the SWs have thrown into lots and lots of romantic misadventures. Caroline lived with a previous doctor who might have been called Matthew Thorogood, had a relationship with an army officer at one point, had an affair with Brian, married Oliver Pemberton (the odious Simon's father) who died, nearly married Robin Somebody, who was both vet and vicar, and did marry Oliver Sterling.

Debbie had an on off thing for years with her university lecher lecturer Simon Gerrard, eventually marrying him, but that ended in divorce. She was also involved with Simon Pemberton (see above) and (I think) Richard Locke, when he was keen on The Sealed Knot and before he got together with Usha. There was a hunky farm labourer called Steve something too, and a Hungarian man who never spoke on air as far as I can recall.

I hope you were all paying attention to all of that, because there will now be a short test. Xmas Grin

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/12/2015 11:23

Oops! I forgot Robin Fairbrother from Elizabeth's list. Blush

enochroot · 12/12/2015 11:24

Are those choices for the next thread title, pseudo?
I like 'Rob has Adam by the nuptials'.

I don't want Charlie to go but I can't see a way for him to stay unless SOC comes up with something really improbable like a sudden reappearance of Stefan ready to testify against Rob and a rising by the Berrow workers to protest that Charlie is the best manager ever.

FloraDiesEarly · 12/12/2015 11:33

Wow gasp! I've suddenly remembered a couple of things - was Janet the vicar before Alan? And she had an affair with someone called Tim? That's all I can remember - if you or anything else can fill me in that would be great and prove I haven't lost the plot.

LyndaNotLinda · 12/12/2015 11:53

Blimey Gasp0de - they really need you as their new archivist! Most impressive recall Xmas Grin

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 12/12/2015 12:00

I think Ruth will come home all sorry I left you in the lurch I have been selfish and Deevid will be all oh no we didn't realise how much we need you and it will all be fine.
And yet another thong will not have happened.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/12/2015 12:01

Yes, that's right. Janet was the vicar before Alan and she became very close to the doctor, Tim Hathaway, who was married to Siobhan, who had an affair with Brian. Ruairi is Brian's son by Siobhan, who left the village and took Ruairi with her when Brian refused to leave Jennifer, but then asked Brian and Jennifer to take him in when she knew she was dying from melanoma. Sad

Tim and Siobhan split up when Siohban was first pregnant because he realised she was having an affair. It had been very clear for a while that Janet and Tim were much better suited to each other than Siobhan and Tim, but nothing happened between them till after Tim and Siobhan had split up. They left the village and I think they are now married. (Janet and Usha were very chummy so occasionally they are still mentioned.) It's debatable how much of the Tim/Siobhan split was attibutable to Siobhan's awareness that Tim was attracted to Janet - in my view, not much. Siobhan's behaviour was far, far more reprehensible than Tim's or Janet's.

selsigfach · 12/12/2015 12:51

Good grief, GaspOde!

R4 · 12/12/2015 12:55

Has Gasp0de been at the Christmas sherry already?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/12/2015 13:45

We do have a bottle of Harvey's Bristol Cream in the cupboard, actually, R4. Must remember to do something with it before it goes off. I bought it for my mum when she visits, which is rare. My own preferred tipple if I'm going to have sherry is Tio Pepe, which for some reason I always drink while I'm cooking the Christmas turkey.

The only stimulant involved this morning was adrenaline/endorphins from getting a new PB at Parkrun! I walk it. 5k in just under 44 mins. Not bad at all! Xmas Smile

QueenArseClangers · 12/12/2015 14:04

Sorry to lower the tone but I'm chuckling at Smalleggs:
And yet another thong will not have happened.

Thank buggery for that, really don't fancy seeing Deevid in a g string

FinestGrundyTurkey · 12/12/2015 14:10

iirc the Brian/Siobhan shenanigans used to be referred to as Hungarian translations? It was something to do with BL's Hungary operation - was Siobhan a translator?? (Hungarian seems a strange language for her to know though Confused)

Anyway I'm fairly sure that's how the affair started & once it got going the old MB used to have lots of fun with Hungarian translations - a bit like batting for Darrington (& Ugandan discussions in Private Eye Grin)
