Haven't listened to tonight's yet, but... a thought from last night's....:

Kirsty and Tom very smugly talking about how it won't just be the two of them for ever made me wonder if Kirsty is going to have problems conceiving (either because of a problem with her or, more temptingly in terms of sw-ing, with Tom). That would set the cat among Tom's pigeons.

GypsyFloss · 11/03/2014 05:57

I remember the horse whipping comment as being from Peggy to Brian with regard to his affair with Siobhanyourknickersyourmotherscoming.

Eastpoint · 11/03/2014 06:02

Wasn't the reconciliation after Freddie fell off Topper, Nigel's horse while riding in the ring at Shula's stables?

yes, the pre-Hathaway doc Usha went out with (Richard something, a token Northerner) was the one treating Dan for his later-magically-cured whatever it was (juvenile arthritis?)

Shula was with Alistair at the time & there was some kind of big him-or-me showdown

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 11/03/2014 09:49

actually was he The Token Northerner & now it's the vic? (he is northern, isn't he? I'm not that good on accents)

leaving Ruth aside obv. wrong north.

guineapiglet · 11/03/2014 10:22

yes Alan and his lovely daughter and occasional grandma, ( who is fab) are from Leeds supposedly. but the longest standing token northerner and my all time favourite character was George Barford, ex copper/ gamekeeper, husband of Christine and mentor of Will.... after whom wee Georgeis named.

he was a right character.....

I remember the Elizabeth forgiving David after she made a bad judgement call and let Freddy ride Topper, thus risking his neck. She realised that she had just done the very thing that David had done to Nigel, except without fatal consequences.

I am still sooooo annoyed that they did Nigel in. Mostly because of the heavy handed way the SW had him pontificating at length about the sheer fabulousness of his life endlessly before the drop. They may as well have painted a black spot on his hand.

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 11/03/2014 12:45

Thanks, Humphrey Smile

I am still cross about Nigel too. (And sad)

MissMilliment · 11/03/2014 12:49

The Peggy horsewhipping comment was definitely at the time of Brine/Siobhan. I remember my gleeful chuckle when she said it. I do love Brine though. He has a way of delivering a line that is pure, dry, comedy genius.

And I too will never ever forgive the chucking-Nigel-off-the-roof fiasco. Apart from how badly it was done, it's left a massive gap in the cast of characters and made Lower Loxley a very nothing place now it has neither Nigel nor Julia left.

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 11/03/2014 13:04

Exactly MissM. What is the point of it now - from an entertainment rather than dynastic pov?

Particularly since in exchange for fabulous Nigel we got Ambridge's most boring citizen.... Roy!

MissMilliment · 11/03/2014 13:13

I almost feel like I wouldn't mind if they just snuck Nigel back into the cast, no explanations given, as if the whole sorry saga never happened. The more I think about it, the better that sounds. It wouldn't actually affect anything as far as I can see.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/03/2014 13:37

Humphrey has it exactly with D&E reconciliation.

Of all the people they could have bumped off, why did it have to be Nigel? If they had to do something to him then breaking his neck would have had a lot more dramatic scope.

Back to Ruth....either seriously ill or pregnant. And if the latter, could be problematic because she's been up to her elbows in lambing.

ppeatfruit · 11/03/2014 13:39

Yeah he wakes up after having fallen down the chimney in a dream.

It might affect "when 's Lizzie going to get a good bonk ?" Storylines though! Grin

AllMimsyWereTheBorogroves · 11/03/2014 15:06

How about if Elizabeth met a Hooray Henry type and married him? He could be called ... umm.... Milo Bargetter.... and played by an actor with a posh voice. I hear Graham Seed is free...

AllMimsyWereTheBorogroves · 11/03/2014 15:21

Northern doctor was Richard Locke, played by William Gaminara who was also in Silent Witness later on. Dr Locke was up before the GMC after one of his patients left him some money and her son decided that Dr Death Locke must have known about this in advance and given his mum an overdose of morphine to speed her on her way so he could pick up his legacy. He got off with a rap on the knuckles for poor record-keeping over his prescribing records or something like that.

Yes, however hard it may be to imagine now, Shula had a very high-octane affair with Richard while well on the way to being engaged to Alistair. 1998, I've just discovered from this site. Summaries of some sort for every episode for 20+ years!

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 11/03/2014 15:25

Mrs Barraclough Smile (no idea why I remember that!)

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 11/03/2014 15:28

I used to subscribe to the mag from \link{http://www.archersanarchists.com/\this lot} who have a pretty similar approach to most of us

It's only £11 a year & they didn't have a website in the old days (I think it was £10 then), I'm quite tempted to sign up again

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 11/03/2014 15:29

online only is £6 - even better!

AboveTheOxbow · 11/03/2014 16:06

Wow! Another longstanding Archers fan thrilled to have found this thread :)

My husband tries, Lord knows he does, but having grown up with a father who is a fellow die-hard (closet) Archers fanatic, it's hard to respect a man who says things like 'remind me, which one is Hazel?'

The explanation of Siobhan and Brian's affair brings back memories of standing by the kitchen radio in my first little terrace house in Norwich. I remember listening to Shula's affair unfold in my first year university dorm and my dad desperately trying to get long wave reception at a campsite in Alsace when Mark Hebden died!

I am loving TA at the moment- it's the best it's been for years. I'm sure that there's a big space for Rob (next to Cameron?) in the Ambridge rogues' gallery....

PseudoBadger · 11/03/2014 16:19

Could we have Nigel return as ZombieNigel? I wonder who has an OFRS in Ambridge?

OP posts:
GypsyFloss · 11/03/2014 16:44

I would love Nigel back either in real or zombie form. He strikes me as the sort who would definitely have an OFRS and possibly some OFbicycle panniers too!

unitarian · 11/03/2014 18:01

It does look as though the writers take notice! Suddenly Ian reappears and is uneasy about Helen's welfare at last. Also Darryl and the awful Rosa seem to have disappeared so maybe, just maybe, we could get a new Nigel character - a long lost Pargetter cousin perhaps and a thoroughly good sort of chap.
Also, I would like to see both Tom and Helen get their come-uppance and have to go crawling to Pat and Tony. I predict that Tom's pot of gold from Peggy turns out to be not nearly enough to cover his debts and Tony makes a terrific success of his cows.

GypsyFloss · 11/03/2014 18:38

I would like to see both of those too unitarian , especially Moany's cows being a raging success. Tony Archer Beef. With Tom getting petulant and foot stamping about Tony nicking "his" style of brand name.
