Have I irrationally fallen in love with this property?

If I were free to move, I would view this house tomorrow. Bearing in mind

  1. I'd be happy to move to Beckenham
  2. I like a modern house, I will never live in another Victorian terrace
  3. We want to downsize
  4. We would have money to spend on certain improvements

I'm feeling a bit frustrated that we can't go for it, so please point out the downsides so I don't feel so bad!

I know this won't help but I really like it too! It has a lot of character and interesting features, not a standard box of a house. Too many houses nowadays are all the same or similar layout which I know suits many people but I'm all for being different.

MannersAreAll · 03/11/2025 13:43

I think it's lovely inside.

I wouldn't buy another property with a flat roof though. Fine when it's fine, absolute nightmare when it goes tits up.

Memeyoulater · 03/11/2025 13:50

I absolutely love it !

ImWearingPantaloons · 03/11/2025 14:06

I like the 70s feel of the wood bits, and that lovely big window.

LancashireButterPie · 03/11/2025 14:12

I like the house. Nice and airy. For £700k I'd move out of Beckenham though and get somewhere with a drive and a bigger garden.

If you are "note sure of the area" how on earth are you able to say "way over priced".

Some posters on here....

700 000 for a small mid terrace in England anywhere IS over priced and if you think that its not your part of the problem.

Oh don’t be silly 😆

are you including…. Central London? Notting Hill? Kensington? Holland Park? Richmond?

I see the house has been reduced in price! Dread to think what they were asking before! OVERPRICED! Is it your house ?

I so agree! This is exactly what I'm after - something a bit quirky inside, a bit of a talking point.

To the pp saying "is it your house?" or "I assume this is your house" please do bore off.

The house 3 doors away that was linked on the thread yesterday at 21.06 sold for £795,000 in 2021, so I imagine "my" one isn't over-priced, even though it has a smaller back garden.

To be fair, the properties in those areas have significantly greater kerb appeal - and, of course, location. So you can't really compare what this house would cost there, because it wouldn't be there.

I think it's quite a "toppy" price for it.

I'm not really feeling the love op. I think its been priced up for the unusual hole in the floor, which has its drawbacks. I mean that's actually charging for thin air!

It isn't in renovated condition and by the time you had done the renovations, I think you'd struggle to shift it and make back what you had spent. I wouldn't lose too much sleep over this one op.

mugglewump · 03/11/2025 16:03

I like the stairs and open feel. I do not like the cheap PVC windows.

Larrylobstersrollerskate · 03/11/2025 16:08

Personally the flood risk that someone else highlighted via the EA webpage would be enough to put me off. As time goes by anything with a flood risk will get harder to sell and insure. The Flood RE scheme that helps people get insurance on flood risk properties is due to end in the not too distant future.

Well at least the ground floor could be used as a swimming pool! You could jump in from the upper landing via the big hole!

Ohh houses are definitely a personal preference but for me it hasnt got anything about it for the price. It would need to have a wow factor somewhere but this just doesnt. Its underwhelming . Sorry 😞

dancingbymyself · 03/11/2025 16:51

Judging from this feedback, if you were able to buy this house and had friends/family visiting, a good 70% of them would secretly be thinking your house is hideous 😆

Ilovemyshed · 03/11/2025 16:58

I quite like the retro style inside but its fugly outside.

Also these properties have minimal insulation and poor windows so you would need to upgrade that massively = expensive.

dumberthanaboxofrocks · 03/11/2025 17:25

I thought fuck no from the exterior but I also really like the inside. I’d stick a laundry hamper on the living room floor so the kids could fire their washing straight down from the floor above lol

Or a slide? No-one late for breakfast!

NormasArse · 03/11/2025 17:29

Oooh- think of the fabulous mid century vibe you could give it! I love the glass at the back too!

Sorry- not what you were asking for 😬.

Also won't the smell of the meal from the dining room rise straight up into the bedrooms? You'd constantly have fishy sheets and beefy curtains.

I think it's a cute idea but it doesn't withstand scrutiny really.

Houses like that round where I live cost another £100k on top.

It's all demand and supply. You must understand that? No one wants to pay so much for a house but it's all location location location.

I could sell our house and buy a huge granite detached house with lots of land in some areas of the north of England...but do I want to do that? No.

Ugly AF
Small rooms
Bland kitchen that will be a mare to clean
exposed pipes in bathroom
Terrifying open stairs
Tiny garden
Carpets downstairs will get fithy
Bloody expensive
Not in Yorkshire 😊

@Hoppinggreen It's 140 square metres! There's so much someone could do with that house.

OP has said she has money for renovation.

PS I'm sure whoever buys it will change the carpets (and perhaps make it shoes free) (you probably wouldn't like that would you?)
