Neighbours painted out new fence

Discovered today that our neighbours have painted their side of our year old fence. They didn't ask. There are dribbles of paint coming through. I'll talk to them tomorrow but what is normal to ask for in this situation? For them to clean it? Replace it?
Thanks in advance

No she had no right to paint it, but the fence owner doesn’t have to look at that side and wasn’t complaining that any had gone through to her side or affected her in any way.
to actually go round and paint it, so the poor people had to look at the colour of prison walls when ever they were in their garden, because of principle is next level imo.

Well that's the law. She painted it grey to match the grey they had done on their side. If neighbour doesn't like it put their own fence up and paint it whatever colour they like. Pretty simple

yikes! I’ve lived in the same street most of my life and everyone just paints their own side of their fence whatever - no one gives a crud tbh. I’m about to move and mn has be worrying that I don’t understand fence etiquette!? If I move Into my house and the fence needs painted but it’s not technically my fence… what do I do ?! Let it rot ?

If it's not your fence, you have a conversation with your neighbour. If they don't want you to touch it, you put up your own fence.

Not all fences need treating and none need actual painting. That just adds more work as has to be maintained.

I can’t believe how petty people can be about a fence ! Literally leaning over and removing stuff and saying don’t touch my fence 🤣 we paid for all the fences to be replaced because they needed it. The neighbours can decorate or paint them how they like on their sides, we do not care !

My fence is actually completely on myside inside the boundary so there is a gap from my fence to the actual biundary. Too bloody roght they don't get to paint there side, they can put a fence up on the boundary if they want to. It's not being petty in some cases. You wouldn't go onto someone else's land and do something when it doesn't belong to you.

They can do what they like to their side but if it impacts my side they can come and sort that out for me.

ForgettingMeNot · 28/04/2025 19:55

My neighbour did to me, it was horrible oily preserve stuff. I explained my displeasure and they won’t be doing it again. Five years on it’s almost faded

I don’t even know who owns which fence , there’s nothing in the deeds. We replaced part of the fence which was broken, checked the neighbours were happy but didnt ask for a contribution. They can do what they like with their side.
